Lost all destop icons for each user except the common ones

6 min read

This thread's last reply is from July 12, 2009, 7:25 AM UTC. Software, malware, and removal-tool advice below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Hi,

Noticed that all of the desktop items were lost except for the common ones (all users).

Kaspersy Internet Security 2009 full scan was run and the recommended fix was used. Several virus, malware and trojans were found. All were allegedly fixed.

The desktop icons (like my computer etc) are still missing and not to be found in the user's destop directory.

Is there still infections on the system? Also is it possible to get the desktop items restored?

Thanks in advance

Flyingdave

If you are agreeable to the above, then everything should go smoothly :) . We may begin.
I am working on your log now and will be back the soonest.

You are running HijackThis from a temporary folder/desktop/zip file.

When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from temporary folder, desktop or from a zip file because the backups will be deleted.
Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the fix process.

Move HijackThis.exe to a new folder like C:\HijackThis. You will need to create the folder.

Please post an Uninstall list
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Go to Open the Misc Tools section by clicking on the box.
  • Under the Systems tools, look for Open Uninstall Manager and click on it.
  • Click Save list... and save the text file in a convenient location.
  • Post the Uninstall list contents in your reply.
Hello flyingdave,
