This _is_ hard! I have been trying for many hours to overcome this one and have been advised that you are the people to help!

Here is the HJT file for the laptop that I am trying to clear.

Hi,

First of all I want you to stop a process
You do that by: Presing the alt control delete keys simultaniously
In the tab processes look for

gclib.exe
Highlight it by clicking on it, and press the end process button.
Now please close this Taskmanager window.

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

Download 'SpSeHjfix'. to the desktop and then
right click a blank part of desktop & select new folder, call it spfix
unzip the file into that folder

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

Now run the Shredder - Hit The FIX button!

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Hm...

The process that you instructed me to stop is not listed in the processes. Since I have run adaware since I made the HJT log I will post another. I suppose that AdAware might have made a siginificant difference.

Back in a while...

New HJT file. I promise that I will do nothing further to the machine until I get your advice :)

Ok that's nice, but you can just go on with this fix, i eliminated the removal of that proces.

One thing that I havr not mentioned so far is that it seems that the OS has never been upgraded since original installation. There is a vast list of critical updates including SP2 which should have beed applied.

Am I right to get clear of the about:blank trojan before I start to upgrade? Or should I upgrade anyway?

The various automatic malware programmes that I have installed have removed masses of stuff.

Thanks in anticipation.

Ok we are going to repeat part of the fix, because it didn’t disappear completely.

Reboot and post only the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

I will do that in a bit. The laptop is at present doing a virus scan and so far has picked up ipreg32.dll which is says is a Trojan horse Downloader Small.D and ipreg32[1].cab called the same.

Both of these files are in the Temporary Internet Files folder.

You seem to have made a big diffence. Apart from the fact that the above keep appearing the computer is behaving reasonably well!

Back in half an hour when AVG has finished doing its stuff.

When I run SpSEHjfix the computer hangs with the "Start disinfection" button greyed out. However I can get the log by pressing The "Log " button. I have pasted it below:

Once you have rebooted after these actions from the previous fix, i'd like to see a Hijack This log now.

Dear me. I quite thought that it was cured. And indeed it was until I connected to the internet and surfed about for a short time.

Running a further AVG check revealed an infection. AVG reports the folowing details:

URL: ms-its:mhtml:file//c:explorer.mht!http://iehelp.net/counterhelp.chm::/ipreg32.cab

C:\Documents and Settings\GRACE\LOcal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\W9MZCPEF\ipreg32[1].cab
Trojan horse Downloader.Small.21.D

Doing the new HJT log now...
