3 Reoccurant Trojans

Unread postby mjara » July 16th, 2006, 2:31 pm

Hi everyone,

I really hope someone has an idea of how to solve this one, because I'm one step away from giving up and reformatting my disk. Here's what's happening:

1. I was browsing the web with an older version of Firefox (1.03, I think.) I guess this was an "elicit" website, because Firefox crashed, and my virus scanner (PC-cillin) warned me that something was trying to contact the internet. I hit the "halt all internet traffic" button, to find a "casino" downloader icon on my desktop.

2. The realtime virus scan (of PC-cillin) keeps detecting and "quarante"ing three viruses. These have different temp-style names every time. For example:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\{774C31FE-66B5-4E38-90CC-D5063D1574E0}.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\{48697A2A-7F6F-4B56-846A-6163923C321C}.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\{983D2AB0-3272-48AA-A696-A1E865F6F668}.exe

It lists these as "TROJ_SMALL.BWU", "TROJ_Generic", and "TROJ_Generic", respectively.

These three seem to reappear every few minutes. When I first boot (or restore from hibernate/standby), is when I seem to get the first notification from PC-cillin.

Here is what I have tried:

1. Searching for information on these viruses, through Trend Micro and the web. The only info I can find is that "troj_small" attempts to overwrite my "hosts" file. My "hosts" file is still intact, however, I think because PC-cillin is catching it before it can execute. The other two are "generic" trojans. There is no information on whatever "host" program is generating these things.

2. Updating PC-cillin's patterns, and doing a full disk scan. It hasn't found the culprit.

3. Uninstalled Firefox, deleted the Firefox install directory, reinstalled the latest. (I thought maybe Firefox itself was somehow modified.)

4. Disabled System Restore, re-scanned, and removed the three viruses repeatedly. The three reappear, even with System Restore off.

5. Run various free online scanners: McAffee, Trend Housecall, Semantec AV, CA (whatever it's called).

6. Run free spyware scanners: Ad-Aware, Spybot

7. Did some of these things in "safe mode".

8. Run applications like "StartupList", "SecurityTaskManager", and "HijackThis" to look for anything suspicious. I didn't see anything, but I'm not a Windows XP expert.

Here is my "HijackThis" log. I would appreciate *any* ideas, that would keep me from having to reformat my disk!

Welcome !! Please take note of the following while we are working together:
  • Your fix may take a couple posts so please be patient even if you don't see immediate results.
  • I will working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's definitely better to be sure and safe than sorry.

***************************************

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present).

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gujlo.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\gujlo.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. close HijackThis.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/l ... areout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

Download Blacklight Beta from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
* Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
* Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
* Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
* Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
Wait for it to finish.
* If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close) because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"
* It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl....big number
Please post contents of log.

In your next post, please include
  • new hijackthis log
  • blacklight log
  • fixwareout log (report.txt)

Hi agrarianmonk,

First I'd like to say, I'm impressed at the quick response and extreme willingness to help! Especially since I haven't given you any $$! :) (I will be making a donation though, I'm very impressed.)

I followed your steps. It *looks* like the fix via "hijackthis" or "fixware" may have fixed the problem... I haven't gotten any more warnings from PC-cillin!

If you deem this problem fixed, I'd be interested to know what you think the problem was, and why my antivirus software couldn't detect it.

Here are the new logs you asked for:

Those lines might have something to do with my Comcast internet. However, since I am using a router now anyway, it shouldn't matter.

I've "fixed" those lines, and rebooted. My new Hijackthis log follows.

My computer seems to be running fine now, though I have not been using it extensively over the past two days. But PC-cillin has not complained about any more viruses. My XP boot time is pretty long, but I don't think that has anything to do with viruses. (This computer usually takes a long time to boot.)

Thanks for the help! Please let me know if I should do anything else.

everything looks good to me, are you having any specific problems?

***************************

You'll want to update Java as malware can sometimes exploit older versions.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  1. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  2. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  3. If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  4. After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  5. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  6. There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
      Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files

  7. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  8. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

*you'll want to remove all previous versions of Java using add/remove programs (the latest version is J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7).

*******************

reboot, and post a new hijackthis log.

Okay, I updated Java, cleared my cache, and removed all old JRE's.

I'm not noticing any more problems. It looks like it's been fixed!

Here's my new Hijackthis log. Please let me know if I should do anything else. And thanks again!

Congratulations, your log looks clean! Are you having any other problems?

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners

weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

I'll look into installing those three programs. You've saved me a lot of work in reinstalling Windows!

Thanks for all the help!
