Hi

Sorry, I should have posted an explanation with my last Hijack log!

I haven't been able to get any updates for my anti-virus/firewall since I downloaded the last version and they have been hopeless with their support so I have uninstalled and am now looking at other options. The MR site is the only one I have been to in the meantime.

Will be selecting new option and installing today.

Apologies for the worry!

Here's a good list:

Please install an antivirus and firewall first, because it doesn't make any sense to remove malware from your system if no scanner is preventing them from reinfecting your computer.

AVG Anti-Virus, Avira OR Avast Home Edition are good FREE antivirus scanners.
After installing ONE antivirus program, download the latest signatures, and do a full system scan.

Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over:
Kerio Personal Firewall OR ZoneAlarm are good FREE firewalls.

Read Understanding and using firewalls to learn more about using firewalls

VERY IMPORTANT: Never install more than ONE antivirus scanner and firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease their reliability and effectiveness!

fix these lines in Hijackthis:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {5ABC27A2-6A0F-0981-F15C-E4C5A620A85A} - C:\WINDOWS\mtimp1.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)

reboot, and post a new hijackthis log. (I'd like to see that you've added a new antivirus and firewall by your next post).

*also let me know how your computer is running and if any problems persist.

3 lines are being stubborn :x

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

***************************************

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present).

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {5ABC27A2-6A0F-0981-F15C-E4C5A620A85A} - C:\WINDOWS\mtimp1.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

reboot into normal mode, and post a new hijackthis log.

Congratulations, your log looks clean! Are you having any other problems?

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners

weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

First of all, thanks for your help in cleaning up my PC - very much appreciated.

All appears to be running very well now (and fast) - only slight query I have is that Ewido says it is active as a shield but doesn't appear in my system tray until I open it from the desktop. I assume (from the log above) that it is active but just not showing in the system tray?

Do you recommend running SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IESpy-Ad alongside Ewido (i.e. should they all run OK together)?

Thanks again

Well, Ewido's active guard is only good until the trial runs out. After that, you can still manually update and scan, but the guard will be inactive.

Spywareblaster / IE-Spyad are passive protection that can run alongside anything. The function of them is to add restrictions into Internet Explorer so that you can't even download/access the malware to be downloaded.

Spywareguard is a good real-time protection program that protects against spyware installations in real time. Its function is similar to that of the Ewido guard, so running both would have lots of overlap.

hope that answers your questions. post back with any more you might have.
