Trojan-spy. HTML Smitfraud. C

Unread postby Chief Worf » May 12th, 2005, 3:01 pm

Hello,
I have the trojan-spy.html Smithfraud.C in my system. I was able to remove the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) However the 25 additional desk icons (Sex, Gambling, Credit Cards) can't be removed for more than a few minutes without popping back up. I have warnings every 10 minutes about spyware and Internet Explorer is trying to get to the internet for some type of download. Several people have tried their approach to fix this problem. NONE fully worked. Here are the items that have been tried.

1. Ran Ad Aware build 1.05 (73 files discovered, first run was over 1100)
2. CW Shredder (System Clean)
3. Spybot S & D (System Clean)
4. Ran AVG Anti Virus(No Virus found)
5. Installed Zone Alarm Firewall
6. Microsoft Antispyware (nothing found)
7. Ran Killbox (Not sure if anything happened, followed instructions though)
8. Ran Ad Aware, CW shredder, Spybot S & D and AVG in SAFE MODE (Still noting found)
9. Ran Hijackthis. My log is below. I have not found any files to delete and have not touched anyone of them.

Download Ewido, install then from within the program check for updates BUT dont scan yet
ewido security suite: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/ew ... 98736486/1
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu". When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
We will fix this in a moment.
From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), Now close the program.

Create this batch file but dont use it just yet, to do so open a new notepad document and copy then paste the bolded below into it, Save it as file name: "runme.bat" (not including the quotes). now go file save as "Save as file type: All files (*.*) and save it on your Desktop.

sc stop SvcProc
pause
sc delete SvcProc
CD %windir%

Nail.exe /FullRemove

if exist %windir%\svcproc.exe del %windir%\svcproc.exe
if exist %windir%\nail.exe del %windir%\nail.exe

Run "runme.bat" by double left clicking on it.

reboot into safe mode,..
Unhide all files and folders,..

How to unhide file and folders

How to boot into safe mode

Run "runme.bat" again.

Scan with and fix anything found with the Ewido program.
Run SpyBot check for problems and fix anything found.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Restart back to normal mode.
Once back make and post a fresh hijackthis log
Hope you had a good weekend. I have followed all of the instructions above.
Ewido was RUN and all bad files were fixed.
Ran Spybot and the scan was clear.
Ran Ad Aware and found about 10 files and fixed them.
The DESK ICONS ARE GONE FOR GOOD (The bad ones that is...)
I don't seem to be getting any error messages but computer was only on for about 10 minutes. Here is my HIJACKTHIS LOG:
While you wait for baskar1234 to reply could you visit the downloads page at the top of this forumand replace your old copy of HJT with a later version. V1.99.1 is the current download.
Please post back with a new HJT log for baskar1234 to view.
Hello,
I didn't have the latest HIJACKTHIS program so I got the newer version and I have posted my new log for your examination. My compter seems to be much better. No more bad desktop icons and no more warnings of the computer being infected. Internet Explorer isn't really working seems as if I'm blocked in some way. Some websites will not load? here is my log:
Baskar
Client in chat room.
==========
Advised as follows - to run this fix for the nail infection, as it still shows in the log. Then post back with the fresh HJT log etc.
Some of the programs Chief already has - not to re download, just run again instead.
===============
Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.
Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php? ... 5010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.
Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.
Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.
Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan
Hi there,
  • Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.
  • Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.
    Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\autodisc.exe
    Exit the Task Manager when finished.
  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.newgenlook.info/ad/ad0278/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
    Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.
    Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\autodisc.exe
    C:\PROGRA~1\Grokster\Grokster.exe /SYSTRAY
    C:\DOCUME~1\SENIOR~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\app1F.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\wupdater.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
    Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.
Hi,
I followed your instructions. I was able to FIX everything in the Hijackthis log as requested. HOWEVER I was unable to locate the following files using Windows Explorer.
C:\PROGRA~1\Grokster\Grokster.exe /SYSTRAY
C:\DOCUME~1\SENIOR~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\app1F.tmp
C:\DOCUME~1\SENIOR~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\27.exe\27.exe
ltfpress.exe (probably in the c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folders)
C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\wupdater.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
I was able to delete C:\WINDOWS\System32\autodisc.exe
I had all hidden files visible and I'm not sure if I was unable to find them or had they aready been deleted some how. This may seem silly but just to be 100% certain. I used the SEARCH function while in Windows Explorer and didn't find the file. I also tried looking for the folder(s) but had no luck either.
Here is my latest Hijackthis log..
This one needs fixing, as before all other windows closed.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32\Searchx.htm
You may need to disable M$ anti spyware first to do so.
That file should also be found and deleted.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Searchx.htm
Please post back with a fresh HJT log after a reboot
Good Morning,
I have complied with your last posting. Here is my HIJACKTHIS log. I'm running just about every spyware, ad-aware, spybot...etc i can find. Will these programs running at the same time cause me a problem. What programs do you recommend I used to slow down the MalWare, Ad ware and these other things that attack computers?
Well this now looks clean - I assume you are having no problems now.
Re SP2 - it is not advisable to update to that while infected, it sometimes damages the windows install when doing so. Now you are clean is agood time to do so.
Re security programs.
One AV
One Firewall
Multi Anti-Malware.
The list in my Computer Safety Online page should help.
Re Anti-Malware - any that do not get a mention in the rogues list at SWW.
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
I will now give you my all clean message :-
=====================
This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
    You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
    Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
    This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
    Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
May your God go with you..
