Hello and welcome to MR. :)

Make sure that you can see hidden files
" Click Start
" Open My Computer
" Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
" Select the View Tab
" Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
" Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
" Click Yes to confirm
" Click OK
** These files are hidden to stop you accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after fixing your computer. **

==============================

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\f76255ad.exe

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

===============================

Look in your control panels add/remove programs for PuritySCAN By OIN, OuterInfo, OIN or similar , click on it and click remove.
Reboot and delete this folder if found:
C:\Program Files\PurityScan

If not listed, download and run this uninstaller:
http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe

Tutorial for the uninstaller if needed

Reboot when done and delete this folder if found:
C:\Program Files\PurityScan

Post a fresh HJT log and the Jotti scan results please.

Second HJT log posting following amateur's suggestions

Unread postby bobhavlin » June 4th, 2006, 6:26 pm

Hi amateur, thanks for the suggestions. Please see my results below:

The File C:\WINDOWS\system32\f76255ad.exe was not found in that directory or anywhere on my computer, thus I could not run the Jotti.

But the entry remains in the HJT log. Also, I noticed that the w?nspool.exe is still there...

There was no Purityscan program installed in the "add/remove programs" and the c:\program files\Purity* was not there.

I ran the http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe

and rebooted, but still no purityscan directory in c:\program files.

See new HJT log below:

Edit:

Ahhh....I just saw why it didn't work. Eventhough Adaware SE is a wonderful tool, it's adwatch function prevents any changes. You can either uninstall it from the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, and reinstall it after we are done, or follow the instructions below to the T.

To disable Ad-Watch:

  • Right-click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray
  • Select "Restore Ad-Watch"
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options -- Active and Automatic.
  • Uncheck both options (red X).
  • Since you will likely be doing several shutdown/restarts, under Tools & Preferences > Options > Activity > Deselect "Load Ad-Watch at Windows startup"

Note: When Ad-Watch is re-enabled, it is vital that you accept any changes that may be alerted by Ad-Watch.

Then try the instructions in the first post again. Please make sure that Windows is set to show all files before you browse/search for

C:\WINDOWS\system32\f76255ad.exe

Hope you'll have a better luck this time.

Ok, I uninstalled Ad-aware SE Pro and followed the above instructions.

Again, f76255ad.exe was not found anywhere on the system (even with the show hidden files&folders, un-hidden protected operating system files).

Nothing like "PuritySCAN By OIN, OuterInfo, OIN or similar" in the add/remove programs menu.

And I ran the http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe again, rebooted and still no C:\Program Files\PurityScan

Below is the new HJT logfile:

Hi Bobhavlin, :)

Thanks for doing that. We still need to have Adwatch out of the way for the time being. ;) I have no doubt that f76255ad.exe is a bad file. I just wanted it to be recorded as such. Make sure that your system is still set to show hidden files.

You may like to print the instructions so that you'll have access to them later when you are in Safe Mode.

Download and install Ewido Anti-Malware

During the installation, uncheck the following under Additional Options:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Check for updates but do not run it yet.

Note: If you have problems with the updater, you can manually update Ewido.
Download ewido-signatures-full-current.exe from here and save to your Desktop.
All you need to do then is to double-click it, click Install and then when it has finished, Close.

============================================

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.
Tutorial for CCleaner
During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it

============================================

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Look in here for more information.

==========================================

  • Close all open Explorer windows and browsers/email, etc
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button and when complete
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button

Thanks for the logs. Please go ahead and delete the OiUninstaller.exe from the Anti-Virus -Trojan folder on your desktop. If you don't have anything else that you would like to keep in that folder, you can delete the whole folder.

=====================================

Go to start > run and copy/paste or type: regsvr32 /u occache.dll
Click Ok

Now, search and delete if present:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\gdnUS2339.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\rdgUS2405.exe

Go to start > run and copy/paste or type regsvr32 occache.dll
Click OK

====================================

Navigate and delete the contents of the following folder:

C:\quarantine

====================================

You have the updated version of Java (1.5.07), but I also see an older version j2re1.4.2_03 still running.
  • Go to Start " Control Panel " Add/Remove Programs.
  • Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... ) and remove all except j2re 1.5.07.

===================================

Run Kaspersky again.

===================================

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and the Kaspersky scan results please. Also, let me know how things are now.

OK. Did that, now here are the HJT log and the Kaspersky again.
It looks like kaspersky now only finds entries in C:\System Volume Information\_restore...

Yes, it's looking good from this end. How is it there? If all is well, we can go ahead and finish up.

Everything seems to be fine now, thanks for your help!!

Do I need to do something more to ultimately remove it from the 'restore' files?

Great! :thumbright: Yes, we'll clean them from the System Restore too so that they will not come back if you ever have to use that function.

You can delete now from your desktop any fixes/programs/downloads I asked you to do, except Ccleaner and Ewido. You can continue to use them on a regular basis. Since Ewido is a trial version, the realtime guard and automatic update will stop functioning after 14 days that is why we are not installing the guard so it will not interfere with the cleanup or the malware removal process. You can use Ewido as an on-demand scanner (recommended) but you will have to manually update the definition file each time you scan.

Disable and Enable System Restore If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point. Because Windows regularly sets restorepoints, it's very possible that the malware, you have removed, is still present in the System Restore. If you put Windows back to such a restorepoint, this malware will be put back, as well.

This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.) Please do this ONLY ONCE, not on a regular basis.

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.

4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

Reboot normally.

==============================

Remember to hide your system files again.

Start>My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View
Under the Hidden files and Folders heading uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
check the Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK.

===============================

You can reinstall Adaware and adwatch now.

===============================

And that's all. Here are some tips for staying clean and safe internet surfing. You may already have some of the items. Pick and choose the ones you don't have.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.
If you haven't got an antivirus, you can download and install one of the following free ones: Make sure that you have only ONE antivirus running on your computer as more than one would cause conflict and render the computer vulnerable.

AVG Free here
AntiVir here
Avast here

It is essential to keep the anti-virus program fully updated.
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/> to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site <http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/maincatalog.aspx?lc=en-us> and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Keep your pestware-scanners up-to-date and do regular scans with them.

To keep your computer free of Spyware, Adware, Hijackers etc., download and install the following free pestware-scanners (if you haven't installed them already):
AdAware here
Spybot here Remember to "immunize" after each update
Windows Defender here

Install realtime pestware-scanners and keep them up-to-date.

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

SpywareBlaster here Remember to "enable all protection" after each update.
SpywareGuard here

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet.
If there is no firewall installed on your computer, you can download and install one of the following free firewalls:
ZoneAlarm here
Kerio Personal Firewall here
Outpost here
Important: (Windows XP only) If you install a firewall, be sure to turn off the WinXP-firewall!

Test your firewall here to make sure that it's working properly

Install these programs, to make surfing with Internet Explorer safer:

A popup-blocker, f.e. Google Toolbar here: A popup-blocker prevents popup-windows from opening, when you come along a websites that uses them, during internet-surfing.

IE-SPYAD here: This utility adds a long list of known bad sites to Internet Explorer's Restricted Sites zone. This prevents those sites from executing their malicious programs on your computer.

SiteHound by Firetrust
here:

Firetrust introduces the SiteHound Toolbar - the safe way to browse the Internet. With SiteHound, when you browse the Internet, you're shown a warning page every time you go to a site which is a known scam, potentially loads viruses or spyware on to your computer, has questionable content or anything you would not consider reasonable. You are shown a warning page with information about that site. From there you can choose to enter the site or go back. SiteHound is a free add-on to Internet Explorer.

Install and use an alternative browser to surf on the internet.

Because Internet Explorer is the most-used browser on the planet, most of the hijackers, adware and spyware are made to abuse your computer thru Internet Explorer.
Here are some good alternative browsers:
Mozilla Suite here
Mozilla Firefox here
Opera here
Netscape here
Important: You can not uninstall Internet Explorer.
First of all, it's part of Windows and you'll need it to download and install Windows Updates.
Secondly, There are some sites that are only accessable with Internet Explorer, e.g. most of the Online Malware-scanners.

But above all, keep all your software UP-TO-DATE at all time!!

Also, I would recommend reading the excellent advice by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place

Happy and safe surfing. B)
