Help please - sysprotect popup and others

Unread postby Mayela » June 2nd, 2006, 3:26 pm

I would appreciate your help. My computer (which was normally running extremely fast) has become extremely slow recently and I keep getting sysprotect.com popups along with some other ones even though (I thought) my popup security was extremely tight. Below are my logs.

Thanks in advance.

Mayela

Hello Mayela,

Welcome to the MalWare Removal forums! My name is tim. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!

2. Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed

3. Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly.

Hi Mayela,

From looks of your log I see 2 virus programs mcafee and norton Please read quote from wng_z3r0

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, it runs in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

I would suggest that you uninstall or disable one and you can keep it for a backup scanner. The important thing which ever you keep is updated often.

Both your Java and Adobe Acrobat are outdated and vulnerable versions.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok now I need you to run a scan to see more of what is going on with your computer.

Run an online scan at Kaspersky

If you have a and extra tool that blocks popups(I hear beep when mine pops it) you will have to click on it and allow Kaspersky 's popup link.

  • Please go here to run Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner.
  • You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:

    1. Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Extended

    2. Scan Options:
    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan, select My Computer.
  • This will scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button, and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

======================================================================================
Please do next:

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.Watch screen when installing and uncheck block Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar it is optional
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now ewido anti-malware

Please download ewido anti-malware tool

  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu."
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big "E" icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the "OK" button
  • The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. After the updates are installed, exit ewido.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    Ewido manual updates http://download.ewido.net/ewido-signatures-current.exe

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.
  • Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Settings

    • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
    • Click OK
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. NOTE: We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, AOL, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged. In particular, watch for alerts that have the word "Heuristic" in them - if you recognize the file name as "friendly," these may actually be false positives) select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections." If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit ewido
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update your Java.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.

  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment, and install it to your computer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 antivirus

Unread postby Mayela » June 3rd, 2006, 7:34 pm

Hi Tim,

I will print your instructions and work on this in a little bit. I just wanted you know regarding the McAfee, I just downloaded the trial version 2 days ago to see if it could help me get rid of that sysprotect popup. My plan was to uninstall it once the computer is running better and keep on just using my Norton.

Thanks tons though! I really appreciate this. :)

Regards,
May

Hi Mayela,

The Ewido report you posted is a process report I need you to scan the system and remove malware. Make sure to click the scanner button not the analysis button. Please follow all the instructions that were given to you in my last post. You missed the following:
    ewido scan
    HJT Uninstall list
    update Java
    update Adobe

While we appreciate that you very likely posted at multiple forums in order to ensure a response, that only serves to tie up the time of multiple helpers who could be using that time to help someone else who also has problems. Although there are many forums that handle HijackThis logs, there are not so many helpers; most of us help out at several forums.

In addition, the results may not work out so well when you're following different instructions from different helpers. They may suggest different approaches for the same problem, all of which may be good; however, system conflicts may arise if different fixes for the same problem are applied simultaneously.

You may choose to continue on here or at Dell, but not at both, as that would be counterproductive. If you decide to continue on here, then you will need to post in your topic at Dell to let them know you are receiving help elsewhere. Please let us know what you decide to do.

Update

Unread postby Mayela » June 4th, 2006, 10:05 am

Hi Tim,

Thanks again for your help. I went ahead and posted a message at Dell that I am getting help somewhere else. I had originally posted with them and then found you guys. I will definitely stay with you.

Regarding the issues that you are asking me about -

Updating Java - I did not find anything in my Add/Remove Programs with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name; hence I did not remove anything.

Updating Acrobat - I have Acrobat professional and need to keep it to create pdf files; hence, I did not remove it.

ewido - I did do the scan as instructed and it did remove I think 2 items. Maybe I didn't provide you with the correct report? Should I scan again or could I possibly obtain the report in another way?

HJT unistall list - I ran it, but it will not let me save. Everytime I click on Save list, the program closes and it is not saved anywhere that I can find.

Thanks again for all your help.

Regards,
May

Hi Tim,

Regarding ewido, I was able to get to the Quarantine screen and it shows the following -

Origin: c:\WINDOWS\system32\gtdownls_95.ocx
Date: 6/3/2006
Risk: Medium
Infected with: Adware.Gdown

Origin: c:\Program Files\MGI\MGI PhotoSuite II\System\Randomize.dll
Date: 6/3/2006
Risk: High
Infected with: Backdoor.Ralpha

Hope this helps!

Thanks.

hi Mayela,

I need to get you to try again on the HJT uninstall list.
Make sure all explorer windows are closed and Browsers, too.

Open Hijackthis.

Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.

Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.(note: this button is below "Open ADS Spy..."

Click the "Save list..." Button.(note: The button between "Refresh list" and "Back"buttons.)
(The "Save add/remove Software list to disk" box should appear?)

On the list to left Click"Desktop"

Click Save and close HJT.

------------------------
Next

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt
    • To find vundofix.txt
    • click start
    • click My Computer
    • click local disk c:
    • vundofix.txt It looks like a notepad
  • Look on your desktop for Uninstall_list
  • Open Uninstall_list
  • Right click select all
  • right click then copy
  • Come back to this thread
    Paste in your next reply.

Please post these:

Hi again Tim,

I have no earthly idea why I cannot save the HJT uninstall file. Every single time that I click on the Save list button, the program closes and the box that you mentioned does not appear. I even unistalled HJT, reinstalled it and tried it again. I did take screen shots of it and put it in a Word document, but I do not know if I can attach that to this post. It ended up being about 9 screen shots to cover the whole list, I was able to fit it in 2 pages and the file size is 242 KB. Can I post it or get it to you in some way? Anyway the other 2 logs are below.

Thank you again. :)
