Hello and welcome on the Malware Removal forum

First we have to shut off a part of Spybot S&D, because this might interfere with this fix, you do as followed:

Open Spybot S&D. go to advanced mode, click Tools > Resident and uncheck Resident
Restart your computer

***
Now I’d like you to stop a process, do as followed:

Press control alt delete simutaniously, you’ll now enter the taskmanager, go to the tab processes.
Search for the following process, select it and then click the kill process-button

Weather.exe

Close down the Taskmanager.

***
Open ‘Add/Remove Programs’ in the Control Panel.
Select the My Search Bar
entry and click ‘Remove

Repeat that for the following programs:
WEATHERBUG
Viewpoint Toolbar
Wildtangent (programs)

If you don’t see the program Wildtangent, see if there’s an unistaller in its folder, located at C:\ Program Files\WildTangent

***
Now, please run Hijack This choose Do a scan onlyand put a check at the follwing lines:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com

Now click Fix checked

Close Hijack This.

***
We will have to delete some files and folders but first:

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Delete the following files If Present

Don’t worry if you can’t find a certain file or folder, these might be gone with our previous fixes, and just go on with the next file or folder.

C:\WINDOWS1\imGiant.dll

Delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\WildTangent

C:\Program Files\AWS

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

***
Restart your computer
Re-activate Rsident in Spybot S&D at the same way as in the beginning of this fix, but now check at Resident.

Run hijack This an place a fresh log on this board.

First off, just wanted to let you know some things I encountered while following your steps.
1. On spybot search & destroy - under the resident tab there is just a blank log and an install button on the top. No uncheck area.
2. I was unable to delete imGiant.dll - Access denied.
3. After rebooting, I got the following error.

Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services encountered a problem.
szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : unknown
C:\DOCUME~1\LORI~1.LOR\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6854.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\LORI~1.LOR\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6854.dir00\appcompat.txtszModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

That stupid imGiant is still there!! ErggHH!! :x
Now what? I am stumped! I did go to the website to uninstall it
mypctuneup/imgiant but I figured if I followed the steps that would still do something undetected to my computer! These people suck!! :!:

Thanks for your help!! :)

Ok,

I See what your problem is, and maybe not so easy but we will work it out!
I recommend you print this advice. Because we might have to boot into safe mode and from that point, you will not have this page available.

***
We’re going to shut down that SD-Helper part of Spybot S&D, and I gonna explain it step by step.

[Open Spybot S&D
Click mode
Choose advanced mode (click yes in the screen that follows)
Click tools (in the left bottom corner)
Click on the Resident icon (so not checking or unchecking)
Now a screen will appear and that’s when it’s all ok white.
Just above that white screen you’ll see
Resident protection status
You will see two lines, now you only have to uncheck
Residentâ€

The resident part was never installed in my spybot s&d. So I didn't do that part. Should I install it after all this??
Anyway, here's the file.

Well,

I see a clean log!
No problems anymore?

I would advise you to surely put a check at the Spybot’s Resident Tea-timer and SD-Helper, you now know how to do it …right?

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  2. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  3. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  4. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  5. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware, Malware, and Hijackers

  6. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  7. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  8. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

If you don't mind, I'd like to check for any registry ghosts from this infection, so that we can remove them if needed.

Please download the registry search tool from here:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/

Unzip it to a convienant location such as desktop.

Double click regsearch.vbs
paste this into the search box:

imGiant

then hit ok

It may take a while to run, so go grab coffee while it searches.
It will tell you when it is done, and offer you to look at the file.
Say yes and when it opens post it here please.

Registry Search

Unread postby lhumphrey » May 9th, 2005, 7:14 am

I went through my registry earlier (trying to learn more) and delete some files that went with imGiant. I had no idea there were more!! I need to learn a lot more about computers and the registry. I should have gone to school for computers instead of nursing. Oh well!

So, now what? What exactly do those strings mean??

REGEDIT4
; RegSrch.vbs © Bill James

; Registry search results for string "imGiant" 5/9/2005 6:08:05 AM

; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)

Thanks for doing that search. Those entries don't represent a threat, but may cause undue results were you to scan with antispyware apps (false positives) so we should remove them.

Perculator will be along shortly with a quick fix for you.
