This computer is acting a little strange. It will work fine for a while and then blue screen. I ran HJT and there seems to be some things in the log that are a little suspicious.

there seems to be some things in the log that are a little suspicious.
Why don't you tell me what you see that looks suspicious?

Hello,

I am in training. Things are moving a little slower than I had hoped, but things are busy around here.

In the file, 02 - BHO: Viewpoint toolbar BHO and all other entries related to Viewpoint Toolbar, from my research, is a borderline spyware BHO.
Also, the entry 04 - Global Startup: SmartEnforcer.lnk = C:\Program Files\Perfigo\SmartEnforcer\SmartEnforcer.exe. I can't find anything that says it is malware or not.

Everything else in the log looks to me to be ok.

This is not my computer, so I have not seen the blue screen. If it does blue screen, I will post what it says.

Good catch. Now tell me what / how you would post to the user to fix / remove it.

First I would instruct the user to go to Add/remove programs and uninstall the application since it does have an uninstaller. Then I would tell them to reboot into safe mode and delete the viewpoint program directory (Program Files\Viewpoint) and the Viewpoint directory in %profiles%\application data. Then search for and delete the following files if they exist:
axmetastream.dll
swfview.dll
viewbar.dll
ViewbarBHO.dll
Finally, reboot, run HJT and repost a new log.

Am I anywhere close to being right?

Tell you what, I'll give you one of my Can's and you fill in the blanks and remove any parts not need in the can


Hello , welcome to the forum

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

(Add items to fix here)



Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Use Add/Remove Programs and remove:




Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.


Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.



Search for and delete these folders if listed:





Search for and delete these files if listed:






Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.





Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.


Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

You did fine. You found the bad stuff in the log, which is the important part. As far as the blue screen issue, I don't thing Viewpoint would cause that. So the user may have other issues. Keep in mind we mainly do Spyware / Malware removal. Unlees you know hardware issues, we suggest they go to a hardware forum. Don't feel obligated trouble shooting harware issues.

Feel free to use the can I posted. It'll save a lot of typing.

Thanks. The blue screen issue will have to be redirected to the hardware manufacturer. I just wanted to rule out spyware as a possible cause.
