Spyware, fake security sites, troj horses etc - Please help

Unread postby lorotache » May 1st, 2006, 3:28 pm

Hi ,

A pc that I gave to my 4 year old nephew has been completely taken over by spyware, trojan horses etc.

I thought I had managed to get rid of it all by using AVG, Adaware and Search & Destroy. The applications find spyware/viruses, clean/delete them and then when I next access the internet, the pop ups are back and AVG brings up a dialogue box saying that Trojan Startpage.21.bl .....has infected the machine. Find below my hijack this log file. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello lorotache,

Welcome to the MWR forums. 8) Among other things, you have a variation of the CoolWebSearch infection. We're going to try and get everything in one go. There's lots to do, so let's get started. :D

First of all I need you to download some programs for use later.

Download CCleaner
NOTE: Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

Download This file and unzip it to your desktop

Download About:Buster from Here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder from Here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.
  • Download, install, update, and configure, Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06.
Install Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
  • Double-click on aawsepersonal.exe to install the program.
  • Follow the default settings for installation.
  • After the program has finished installing uncheck the "Perform a full system scan now", "Update definition file now", and "Open the help file now" boxes.
Update Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
  • Double-click the Ad-Aware SE Personal icon on your desktop.
  • Click "Check for updates now" then click "Connect".
  • It will check for any updates. If any are found click "OK" to download and install the updates. Once it has finished click "Finish".
Configure Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
  • Click on the Gear button at the top of the window.
  • Click "General" on the left hand side to display the General Settings box.
    • Make sure these items have a green Check next to them. If they do not, click once on the circle next to them to put a green checkmark in it.:
      • "Automatically save logfile"
      • "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
      • "Safe Mode (always request confirmation)"
      • "Prompt to update outdated definitions" - change to 7 days from the default 14.
  • Click "Scanning" on the left hand side to display the Scan Settings box.
    • Make sure these items have a green check next to them. If they do not, click once on the circle next to them to put a green checkmark in it.:
      • "Scan within archives"
      • "Select drives & folders to scan" - select your hard drive(s).
      • "Scan active processes"
      • "Scan registry"
      • "Deep-scan registry"
      • "Scan my IE favorites for banned URLs"
      • "Scan my Hosts file"
  • Click "Advanced" on the left hand side to display the Advanced Settings box.
    • Make sure these items have a green check next to them. If they do not, click once on the circle next to them to put a green checkmark in it.:
      • "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin"
      • "Include additional object information"
      • "Include negligible objects information"
      • "Include environment information"
  • Click "Defaults" on the left hand side to display the Default Settings box.
    • Make sure these items have your preferred settings in them.:
      • "Default homepage"
      • "Default searchpage"
  • Click "Tweak" on the left hand side to display the Tweak Settings box.
    • Click the + (plus) sign next to the Log Files section. This will expand the section.
    • Make sure these items have a green check next to them. If they do not, click once on the circle next to them to put a green checkmark in it.:
      • "Include basic Ad-Aware settings in log file"
      • "Include additional Ad-Aware settings in log file"
      • "Include reference summary in log file"
      • "Include alternate data stream details in log file"
    • Click the + (plus) sign next to the Scanning Engine section. This will expand the section.
    • Make sure these items have a green check next to them. If they do not, click once on the circle next to them to put a green checkmark in it.:
      • "Unload recognized processes & modules during scan"
      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
      • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
    • Click the + (plus) sign next to the Cleaning Engine section. This will expand the section.
    • Make sure these items have a green check next to them. If they do not, click once on the circle next to them to put a green checkmark in it.:
      • "Always try to unload modules before deletion"
      • "During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot"
      • "Delete quarantined objects after restoring"
  • Once you are done with these settings, click "Proceed" to save them.
  • This will take you back to the main screen.
Close out Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Don't scan yet. We will do it in safe mode.

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix You may want to print the rest of these instructions.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

While in safe mode, double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

Then Open cwshredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete (All three together) to open Task Manager
1. Cclick (highlight) each of the following (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OMNRVC.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IEGC.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NTDT32.EXE

2. Click End Process
3. Repeat for each process.
4. Exit Task Manager.

Now find and delete these files, Note: if you can't find one, don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

C:\WINDOWS\CRWJ.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\MSAD.EXE

C:\WINDOWS\system\myvgu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NETRB32.DLL

c:\windows\system\omnrvc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IEGC.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NTDT32.EXE

Now scan with HijackThis, then put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Scan and clean with CCleaner

Before first use:
Sselect Options=>Advanced.
UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

Select the items you wish to clean up.
  • Windows tab:
    **Internet Explorer** header:
  • Select everything .
    **Windows Explorer** header:
  • Select all
    **System** header:
  • Select all
  • Advanced tab:
  • Select all entries
  • Select any others that you choose.
  • Applications tab:
**Firefox/Mozilla header** (if you use it).
  • Select all
**Opera** header (if you use it).
  • Select all
    **Internet** header.
  • Select Sun Java
  • Select any others thatyou choose.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.

A note regarding cookies: Many sites use cookies to save login information. Many also place "tracking cookies" on your machine. When you use CCleaner to delete all of the cookies on your computer, these tracking cookies are deleted.
You will need to enter your login information the next time you visit those sites. If you do not wish to lose your "save my login" information, uncheck cookies where applicable.
  • Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click "OK"
  • CSelecter will scan and clean your system.
  • When Selecting is complete:
  • Click "Exit".
Now navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click aboutbuster.exe
Press OK button, Start button, then the OK button, and finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. Allow it to run the second pass. Post the log file in your next reply.

Run Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06:
  • Click the "Start" button.
  • Uncheck the "Search for negligible risk entries" entry.
  • Choose the "Use custom scanning options" scan mode.
  • Click the "Next" button.
  • Ad-Aware will begin to scan for malware residing on your computer.
  • Allow the scan to finish.
  • Right-click on any entry in the list and click "Select All" to select the whole list.
Note: Click the Critical Objects Tab. In general, all of the items listed will be bad. Be carefull with the Hosts file entries. Malware uses the hosts file to redirect your websites. You can use the hosts file as a way to prevent malware. If the object has 127.0.0.1 in it, it should most likely not be deleted as it is protecting against unwanted sites. For more information on how to use a host file to protect yourself read This article. In short, you may not want to fix the hosts file entries.
  • Click "Next" and choose "OK" at the prompt to quarantine and remove the objects.
Finaloly, reboot, and run hijackthis again. In your next reply, please include:

1. A fresh HijackThis log.
2. The About Buster log.

Help, I have an error message and don't know what to do

Unread postby lorotache » May 6th, 2006, 7:02 am

Hi there, can I first apologise for the delay in getting back to you. Work has kept me extremely busy all week and this is the first opportunity I have had to try and execute your instructions.

I have downloaded all the applications as advised and have reached the part where I have to operate the machine in Safe mode. From safe mode, I have tried to run the cwserviceremove.reg file and the following error comes up: Registry Editor: Cannot import C:\\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\CWSSER~1\CWSSER~1.REG: The specified file is not a registry script. You can import only registry files

Am I ok to ignore and continue or do I need to rectify this issue first?

Please help.

Thanks in advance

I have followed your instructions as much as possible. Below are a list of the things I was unable to do:

CWShredder - Cool Web Search not found on this system
CRWJ.EXE, MSAD.EXE, myvgu.dll - these files could not be found, so could not be deleted.
NTDT32.EXE - could not delete as "Specified file is being used by Windows"
HJT - Fix Checked - was unable to locate any of the items with myvgu.dll

Apart from the above, everything else went according to plan - thank you so much. Before I post my logs, can you tell me how I can make a donation to you, as I am very grateful and appreciate the time involved by you. Please advise.

Find below my HJT log and About Buster log:

Hello lorotache,

It's not uncommon for files to be missing after completing a fix. The only time that we have to worry about them is if they come back.

Everyone here, and at other forums like this one, is dedicated to stamping out malware. We are always happy when a machine turns up clean. If you would like to make a donation, go to the middle row at the top of the page, and click "Support Us". 8)

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: Class - {98394CA1-7BAB-B29A-F6EF-BCD02C45FA18} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IERZ32.DLL (file missing)

With all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Post back a new log, along with a description of any problems and/or concerns you are (still) having.

My new HJT log

Unread postby lorotache » May 9th, 2006, 1:29 pm

Hiya

As advised, I have run another HJT and have fix checked the line specified. This line is no longer in the log - is that ok?

Can you please confirm whether the pc is now free of all the bad stuff, as I had planned to take the pc over to my nephew in Wales this weekend.

Also, can you advise of any software I should install and a routine that should be followed to keep the pc clean? I have installed Site advisor, but don't know what else to install for his parents to run. The OS is Windows 98SE, just in case you were not aware of this.

Once again, thanks so much for all your help. I left a donation via paypal, but the help you have given has been invaluable.

Here's my log:

Hello lorotache,

Things are looking pretty good. 8) Just a couple of things that we need to clean up. I think that you will be able to take the computer to your nephew this weekend. Once we are sure that everything is cleared from your machine, I have an "all clean" speech which I will post that includes the final cleanup as well as some tips (including recommended software) to make sure that it stays clean.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... _side.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... _side.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

With all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything is running.

Hello Lorraine,

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

Below is my standard "Final Cleanup" and "All Clean" speech. Included in it are tips on how to keep your computer from being reinfected. They are simple to set up and simple to maintain, and I HIGHLY recommend that you follow them. (I use every one.)

Download and scan with CCleaner
NOTE: Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

Before first use:<br>Sselect Options=>Advanced.
UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

Select the items you wish to clean up.

A note regarding cookies: CCleaner allows you to keep the cookies from selected sites such as those which use cookies to save your login information.

From the main screen:
  • Click Options=>Cookies.
  • Highlight the web sites you wish to keep.
  • Click "->" button.
  • Click Cleaner button to return to main screen.
  • Windows tab:
    **Internet Explorer** header:
  • Select everything .
    **Windows Explorer** header:
  • Select all
    **System** header:
  • Select all
  • Advanced tab:
  • Select all entries
  • Select any others that you choose.
  • Applications tab:
**Firefox/Mozilla header** (if you use it).
  • Select all
**Opera** header (if you use it).
  • Select all
    **Internet** header.
  • Select Sun Java
  • Select any others thatyou choose.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click "OK"
  • CCleaner will scan and clean your system.
  • When cleaning is complete:
  • Click "Exit".
  • Repeat for all usernames.

If everything is running ok, let's do the final cleanup...

1. Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

2. If you've downloaded MicroWorld AV (MWAV), run it again - but don't scan, just click "Clear Log" and exit the program.

Please skip this step 3. Go to www.trendmicro.com and click "Free Online Scan", then "Scan now, it's free!". Follow on-screen prompts.

4. Disable, then reenable System Restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system restore point manually.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster => SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard => SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware => If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware => If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad => IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file => The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar => Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Use a Firewall => I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. For an excellent article on Firewalls, why you should use one and a some of those available, see Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls. I recommend ZoneAlarm or Sunbelts Kerio. ZoneAlarm is more user-friendly, but Sunbelts Kerio is considered more secure.
  • UPDATE!-UPDATE!-UPDATE! => This is, without a doubt, THE MOST IMPORTANT element in keeping your computer free of malware. Keep each and every one of your anti-malware tools AND Windows up-to-date with all current definitions and patches.
I also suggest that you delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself), for example:
  • C:\WINDOWS\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • C:\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • Repeat for all users.
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files and cookies:
  • Click Start=>Control Panel=>Internet options.
  • Under the Generaltab.
  • Click Delete Files button.
  • Place a check-mark in Delete all off-line content.
  • Click OK
  • Click Delete Cookies
  • Click OK=>OK
  • Exit Control Panel
  • Repeat for all users.
In Firefox:
  • Click Tools=>Options=>Privacy icon.
  • Click Cache tab.
  • Click Clear Cache button.
  • Click Cookies tab.
  • Click Clear Cookies Now button.
  • Click OK
  • Repeat for all users.
Empty the recycle bin:
  • Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop.
  • Select "Empty Recycle Bin".
  • Repeat forall users.
Note: You can also do the above steps using a program such as CCleaner.
PLEASE NOTE: The above steps should be done on a regular basis.

Also, please see: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hi,

I have done most of the things you stated in your last post, but as the machine is running on 98SE, I was unable to do some of the things mentioned.

The machine is running so much better now and I just wanted to say thank you once again.

You're a star.
