Hello,
This system is probably slow dues to the large number of running processes, mostly from Norton AV apps.

Please Print this page, you will not have Internet Access whilst offline.
Please read all of the following before making any fixes.
If you have any questions, please ask them here before attempting the fixes suggested.

Go offline. Unplug the Cat-5 wire if you are on broadband or a network.

Turn off any Monitoring apps you have running, such as PCTools, Norton, etc...

Show all files as follows
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Run hijackthis again with no Windows Apps or Browser windows open, Scan, and checkmark/fix the following lines:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

Reboot and post a fresh log please.

Oh and btw, I noticed you'd asked someone to run Housecall at Trend Micro, which I did too and I got 7 viruses which were not cleanable but do appear to have got deleted. D'you think Symantec has a fault? How'd I pick these viruses up anyway!?

It's hard to guess what those might be, unless you post the Housecall details about which ones were non-cleanable, preferably with complete filepaths and filenames.

I don't see anything in your new log, so it's possible they are in SystemRestore folder, which we will deal with when this topic is completed.

I try not to give out my personal information, but the compliments are appreciated :)

Let's set a new restore point on this machine, and then see if you still get anything reported by Housecall.

Good that Housecall doesn't show anything now :)

I still suspect NAV to be part of the problem with overall sluggishness, perhaps because it is competing with some of the components of PCTools.

Let's see if anything is amiss in performance.

Click Ctrl/Alt/Del all at the same time (just once, or machine will reboot).
Tab to Processes and look at the CPU column.
System Idle Process should be reading 85-99, varying a little from time to time as system apps run or when monitoring tools are running.

Make a note of any process in the left column (Image Name) which corresponds to anything in CPU column using more than 1cycle all of the time, and let me know what they are.

System performance

Unread postby simi » May 4th, 2005, 8:08 am

I've checked system performance.
System Idle process is 94-95
The only cycles duplicating are:
taskmgr.exe that swings between 03 and 02
System 02

I believe that it is sessntially Symantec thats at fault, slowing down the computer..... :)

I'm inclined to lay it on symantec too ;)

One thing you could do (well, several actually) which will gain you a little speed is to turn off any unnecessary services on your machine.
The following link will take you to a cached page, since the main blackviper.com site is under construction right now.

http://web.archive.org/web/200411280841 ... icecfg.htm

Follow instructions for "SAFE" when resetting services permissions and you shouldn't see any problems.

 Just ran trendmicro again and discovered 2 viruses:

HTML Netsky.P - Non cleanable and complete file name not seen but the start is:
C:\Documents and Settings\NISON\Local........

Both show the same and this time I did not delete the files since I didn't want to run system restore again!

Please help and btw, my name is amy. I hate that computers are so very impersonal!
Thank You again for all yr. assistance.

Hi Amy,
Those files are non-cleanable because they are running processes. If you reboot to safe mode (F8 at boot), then ctrl/alt/del into process manager, see if they are still running and end task if they are.

Then manually delete the files from the location indicated by Trend-Micro filepath.

While you are in safe mode...
Clean out your Temp files as follows:
Open Internet Explorer. You'll get a 404 page not found, but that is normal in safe mode.
At the top, click Tools>Internet Options> and then, in the center click Delete Cookies
Click Delete Files and then in the new applet check the box for all offline content
Click OK
Close that applet and open the C>Windows>Temp folder, and delete all files in there too, and all files in sub-folders of Temp.
Empty the C:\Windows\Prefetch Folder about once a month. More if you use the internet a lot.
Empty ALL C:\Documents and Settings\user name here\LocalSettings\Temp Folders

Note: If you cannot delete them all at once because you have too many, then click and hold ctrl and highlight a batch of them at a time. Once highlighted, R-click over the highlight and select delete. Rinse, lather, repeat until folder is empty
