Hello -

AVG found a Gaelicum.A virus. I deleted the infected file and scanned again. No new infected file was found. I have a feeling the virus is still there. Below is the HJT log:

Hi and welcome to the forums, your log which you have submitted here is now in the process of being analyzed, some logs take longer than others depending on the type of infection. As I am currently at undergrad status all my post are verified before final posting so this may also cause a short delay in the final post. Please be patient and I will get back to you as soon as I can

While you are wating for your reply please note...

Do not try and fix any entries that you see yourself (even if they do seem very obvious) If you do so the fix may not work as it should, leaving you open to possible immediate re-infection.

Do not disable your system restore - an infected/corrupted system restore is better than none at all, if anything should go wrong during the fix and restore is turned off then you could well be looking at a full system format

Please do not post in other forums while you are being helped here This is so the HJT helpers at other forums can get on with helping other users that are in need of attention.

Hi there, At first glance your log appears free from malware, ide like you to to just do a spot of updating and some extra scans, can you tell me what makes you feel you still have a virus.

May I suggest that you either print out these instructions or save them as a text file with Notepad or your default text editor to your desktop as we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix.

I do not see any active firewall...

A firewall serves as a program that monitors ports, connections and programs, both incomming and outgoing from your computer. Windows does come with its own firewall but unfortunatly it only monitors traffic in one direction. As a result we advise that you install your own independant firewall. Two good firewalls you can choose from (both are free) are Sunbelt Kerio Firewall and also Zonealarm both are excellent tools in their job.

Update your Java.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
Click Start > Control Panel.
Click Add/Remove Programs.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment and install it to your computer.

Now lets download an additional program for scanning your computer
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a free version of the program.

Install ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

On the left hand side of the main screen click Update.
Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
Now Close Ewido for the time being, do not scan just yet

Please re-start your computer in safe mode
You may want to print the rest of these instructions from here onwards or save them to your desktop
To do so, reboot your computer and repeatedly tap the F8 whilst your computer is booting up (just before the MS Windows flag screen appears) until a menu appears. Once you see the menu select the option to start the computer in safe mode. (It might take more than go to access the menu if you have not done this before, just simply reboot the machine again and repeat the steps)

Reopen Ewido

Click on Scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Now re-boot into normal operating mode

Run an online scan at Trend Micro, Please go here
Click on "Check my PC" button
Put a check in the "terms of use" check box
Now click on the "Launch Housecall" Button
and perform a full system scan.
Please note this may take some time

Allow it to remove anything it finds and note down anything it finds but cannot remove and its location and post back here in your reply along with your ewido log and a fresh HJT log.

i think the virus is still there from dealing with this particular virus on another computer. i am having trouble keeping my internet connection, and while it might be the service provider, i remember the other computer doing this also. plus the virus scan only deleted an infected file, i assume the virus is still there somwhere. am going to do what you told me to do now. thanks

Hi there adamerhoads, can you just confirm that your ISP is Cable & Wireless (Jamaica)

Apart from that your log your log is indicating that you are clean from viruses, or, any signs of malware. The ewido scan has come out clean (with the execption of a couple of tracking cookies which is quite normal) As an extra precaution and for peace of mind I would like you run a KAV scan before I give you the all clear which I would normally give at this stage. Please note, make sure you use only internet explorer as this involves installing an active-x component. I would advise that you clean out any temp files that you have on your computer, this can be done by using tools such as ccleaner or ATF Cleaner Written by Atribune, if you need further instructions for the use of these tools please go ahead and ask and I will gladly post them for you.

Running a KAV scan
Visit Kaspersky Anti-Virus Online scanner
Please use Microsoft Explorer for this scan
Click on the Kaspersky Online Scanner Button (The first button)
A new window will now open
Accept the agreement by clicking on the accept button at the bottom of the agreement page
It will now install an active x compenent into your browser
Once done it iwll automatically start downloading the virus definitions, once it has done click on the next button
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
--> Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
--> Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
--> Scan Options:
--> Scan Archives
--> Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.

Now copy the report from the log file back to me here
