Hello g71by1,

Welcome to the MWR forums. 8)

They really isn't much going on in your HijackThis log. Let's take care of the few things that I see.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com

O1 - Hosts: 193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com

O4 - Global Startup: hpoddt01.exe.lnk = ?

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
...(Unless you set these with a anti-spyware program like SpyBot's Immunize feature, or a System Administrator set them, have HiJackThis fix this.)

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.windowsupdate.com

O16 - DPF: {001EE746-A1F9-460E-80AD-269E088D6A01} (Infotl Control) - http://site.ebrary.com/support/plugins/ebraryRdr.cab

With all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Post back a new log, along with specifics about the problems you're having. :wave:

Hello g71by1,

It would seem that whatever the error was, it did not interfere with the fix.

It would appear that whatever problems you are experiencing, they are not caused by malware. However, we can dig a little bit deeper if you like. Please do the following:

Download SilentRunners from here:

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Otherwise:

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

Below is my standard "Final Cleanup" and "All Clean" speech. Included in it are tips on how to keep your computer from being reinfected. They are simple to set up and simple to maintain, and I HIGHLY recommend that you follow them. (I use every one.)

Download, install and run Cleanup! from Steven Gould, then:

1. Click "Cleanup!"

(wait for the program to finish scanning your system, and selecting files to be removed.)

2. Exit the program and reboot the computer, if necessary.

For more information about using Cleanup! see here.

If everything is running ok, let's do the final cleanup...

1. Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

2. If you've downloaded MicroWorld AV (MWAV), run it again - but don't scan, just click "Clear Log" and exit the program.

Please skip this step 3. Go to >www.trendmicro.com and click "Free Online Scan", then "Scan now, it's free!". Follow on-screen prompts.

4. Disable, then reenable System Restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system restore point manually.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster => SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard => SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware => If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware => If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad => IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file => The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar => Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Use a Firewall => I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. For an excellent article on Firewalls, why you should use one and a some of those available, see Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls. I recommend ZoneAlarm or Sunbelts Kerio. ZoneAlarm is more user-friendly, but Sunbelts Kerio is considered more secure.
  • UPDATE!-UPDATE!-UPDATE! => This is, without a doubt, THE MOST IMPORTANT element in keeping your computer free of malware. Keep each and every one of your anti-malware tools AND Windows up-to-date with all current definitions and patches.
I also suggest that you delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself), for example:
  • C:\WINDOWS\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • C:\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • Repeat for all users.
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files and cookies:
  • Click Start=>Control Panel=>Internet options.
  • Under the Generaltab.
  • Click Delete Files button.
  • Place a check-mark in Delete all off-line content.
  • Click OK
  • Click Delete Cookies
  • Click OK=>OK
  • Exit Control Panel
  • Repeat for all users.
In Firefox:
  • Click Tools=>Options=>Privacy icon.
  • Click Cache tab.
  • Click Clear Cache button.
  • Click Cookies tab.
  • Click Clear Cookies Now button.
  • Click OK
  • Repeat for all users.
Empty the recycle bin:
  • Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop.
  • Select "Empty Recycle Bin".
  • Repeat forall users.
Note: You can also do the above steps using a program such as Cleanup! from Steven Gould, ATFCleaner by Atribune, or CCleaner.
PLEASE NOTE: The above steps should be done on a regular basis.

Also, please see: So how did I get infected in the first place?

****** PLEASE READ ******
it is very rewarding to see that your computer is clean. Now we urge you to stand up and be counted! Document your experience, and by doing so, launch a complaint against the makers of malware. You can make a difference. Click on the Malware Complaints icon in my signature and support our cause.

Also, if you could give me some specifics about the problems you're having, it would help in deciding the method of attack in fixing them. :wave:

Update

Unread postby g71by1 » April 9th, 2006, 11:37 am

Hi, thankls for help to date. I have posted as requested the SR file.
The problems - Windows Restore window is still blank, got it back first time by running the olereg script from the web, gone again now though!
When i scroll a page on the web it seems to "refresh" or "scroll" on to the screen. When i open the dxdiag in RUN, there is no capacity to enable directdraw or 3d. Maybe a format of C and reinstall would do it, i gather that i would not have to qwipe the other drives on my PC, thanks agin, G

Hello g71by1,

A reinstall should not be necessary. Let's try a couple of other things first

If you didn't do the cleaning steps as outlined in my earlier post, please do so now. After that step is complete please do the following:

Go to Start=>Run.
Type "sfc /scannow"-without the quotes. ( note the space between the "c" and "/" )
Click OK.

The computer will scan for and attempt to replace any corrupt system files found. There are backups of some of these files on your PC and Windows will check for a copy here first. NOTE: If you are prompted to insert your Windows XP disc, do so.

For details on the System File Checker, click here. (Thanks Noviciate for the speech and the link.)

It appears that you're not using Internet Explorer. In Firefox, make sure that you clear out the cookies as well as the cache (basically the same as Temporary Internet Files in Internet Explorer). See if you run across the same problem while using Internet Explorer. If not, you may try uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox. Additionally, make sure that Firefox is current in all of its updates.

Let me know the results of the System File Check and if any of the above steps have fixed or changed the problems you're having. :wave:

Hello g71by1,

Sorry that my suggestions didn't help. I'll post a link to this thread in another department here at MWR to see if anyone else has come across the problems that you are having. In the meantime, let's run one more quick scan to make sure there isn't anything hiding from us. Please do this:

Please print out this instructions as you should have all open windows and programs closed when running the scan.

Step 1.
==========

- Please download F-Secure's trial Blacklight from here
- Print out the help page for guidance. It will be found here
- Click the "I Accept" button at the the license agreement
- Click the "Download" button to start the download
- Save it to your Desktop

Step 2.
==========

- Double-click the blbeta.exe file on your Desktop
- Select the "I Accept the agreement" at the license agreement, then click "Next"
- Make sure "Scan through Windows Explorer (Recommended)" is selected\checked
- Make sure all open programs and windows are closed (including this IE window) before clicking the "Scan" button
- Click "Scan
- When the animated graphics, in the bottom right-hand corner, disappears, click "Next"
- A text log file will appear on your Desktop when the scan is complete. It will start with fsbl-xxxxxx.txt (ie: fsbl-20051017165931.log)
- Paste the contents of that log back here. :wave:

Hello g71by1,

A couple of suggestions to repair in the blank System Restore window.

Download the script found here.

This small GUI (Graphical User Interface) utility will check the Registry associations that cause this problem, and notify you if they need to be corrected. You will then have the opportunity to correct them, by clicking the Repair button. This application is freeware.

Windows XP Only. Requires VB6 Runtime Library (installed on XP by default).

Thanks to Rogue for this tip.

Another suggestion. Follow these instructions.

Thanks to Amateur for this tip.

Are you using a wireless mouse? bamajim suggested that this may be a possible cause for your "scrolling" problem.

Let me know if any of these suggestions help. :wave:
