System restore problem

Unread postby jarl1947 » April 22nd, 2006, 11:47 am

Hi, I'm new to all this. Hope you can help. Trying to build a DVD I got a "blue screen" which came and went too quickly to record the error message. The system then went down and re-started itself. I thoght I could sort things out with System Restore but it is no longer working. Each time I try I get a message saying the system cannot be restored. It doesn't matter how far go back I always get the same message. I have Norton Internet Security installed and ran Ewido AntiMalware when I first encountered the problem but that just identified tracking cookies.

Thanks in advance

Hi jarl1947,

This will give you time to read/copy the "Blue Screen" message.

Right click on My Computer >> then click Properties >> then the Advanced tab.

In the Startup and Recovery box, click the Settings button.

In the new dialog window, under System Failure uncheck Automatically restart. Now if the BSOD happens you will have a chance to read it. I would like to see what it says under Technical information. Don't intentionally try to get this screen to come up, I might ask for that later, but not right now.

-----

I see very little malware related in this log. There is however some items running that may not need to be running, and authoring a DVD can be taxing on some systems.

First let's handle a few things.

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6 .

To check your version to see if it is the latest version, Please go to this link to verify your version to get the updates needed:

You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to verify Your Java software.

Or you can get the manual download here:

Once you have installed the latest update, please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all older instances of Java listed there .

------

Run Hijackthis, Press Do a system scan only (if that button is not available, press Scan)
Place a check (tick) beside each listed item below.
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... _side.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/
Then, with all other windows and apps closed, click Fix checked.

Please run HJT again and post a fresh log from that. Then we'll see about maybe trimming down the running processes.

This might be a hardware problem or a software conflict. A better plact to solve this might be PC Pitstop or Major Geeks. I would like you to fix those few items and post the HJT log. Also let me know what you decide to do.

Hi Pollux.Castor,

Thanks for the input. I'll do the scan as you suggest and send you the log before doing anything else.

Thanks again[/i]
