Theres just a couple of settings we need to adjust and put back but first can I just ask how explorer is acting, is it back to normal, hows your explorer links, can you add to favs?? Please advise of any probs that you are still having there....

Hi Neil

I can see that you still have windows defender running in the background, can you make sure that this program is disabled until further notice by following the instructions from the earlier post here

Can you check the properties for this file --> C:\windows\System32\userinit.exe
Nagivate to the file, then, hold your mouse over the file and you should see tool tips which will shows you certain basic file information, can you let me know the file size, the company name and the file version
or Another way if this does not work is to right click on the file, select properties, and note down the file size for this file and then click on the version tab for the company name and the file version and let me know on your next post

Open HJT by double clicking on the icon and select the second button entitled "do a system scan only".
Make sure you close any windows that are open or minumised

Now select the followng entries by placing a tick in the left hand check box

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {8A8F3D75-6564-4599-A7DC-313B43A89E1D} (AdInstaller Control) - http://www.kazaa.net.cn/digital/AdInstaller.ocx

Once you have selected all entries then click once on the "fix checked" button to clear the entries from your log

Now reboot your computer, generate a fresh log, and post it back - not forgetting the file information I requested ! Let me know how things are... Thanks :)

Hi Neil, lets run one of the programs you downloaded earlier and scan your computer a little deeper --> Winpfind

Extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

To do so, reboot your computer and repeatedly tap the F8 whilst your computer is booting up (just before the MS Windows flag screen appears) until a menu appears. Once you see the menu select the option to start the computer in safe mode. (It might take more than go to access the menu if you have not done this before, just simply reboot the machine again and repeat the steps)

Open the C:\WinPFind folder and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
- Click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish.

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log file at C:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt. Pleased copy that log to your next reply.

Hi Happy St. Georges day, heres the result
thanks

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi there Neil, sorry to say this but it looks like our original tool Smitrem which we downloaded earlier has been changed, and its a tool we now need to use, the updated newer version will need downloading (My Apologies!)

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi Neil, first of all sorry for any delays

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please re-start your computer in safe mode
To do so, reboot your computer and repeatedly tap the F8 whilst your computer is booting up (just before the MS Windows flag screen appears) until a menu appears. Once you see the menu select the option to start the computer in safe mode. (It might take more than go to access the menu if you have not done this before, just simply reboot the machine again and repeat the steps)

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : PLEASE NOTE : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Now I want you to clear out all temprary files from your computer
Hopefully you downloaded ATF Cleaner earlier :)

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

-->If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Now I want you to open up ewido
Once open hit the update button to make sure that the program has all the latest updates
Once done...
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
    • Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
    • Under What to scan select Scan every file
    • Click on Ok
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.

Once ewido has done make sure that you save the results from the scan

Now go to the SmitfraudFix folder again
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter.
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Please post back a reply to this post, do not start a new topic! thank you. including -->

c:\rapport.txt (Smitfraud log)
Ewido log
A new HijackThis log
Your may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

Thanks

Hi there, the logs you have submitted look clear, as you have not mentioned anything about the status of your computer I presume you are still not able to right click, bookmark or download items.

Just as a thought, it has been pointed out to me that an update released earlier this month from microsoft has caused considerabe problems on HP systems and also conflicted with certain NVIDIA shell extensions. We can eliminate this problem to make sure it is not interfering in any way.
Can you run a check which version of the drivers you have...

Download system info by Gabriel Topala
Once downloaded install and run the program

You should now see an explorer sytle menu
Scroll down the left window and highlight the the Video icon
this will now retreiv infromation from your computer
in the right hand window right click and select "select all"
now copy and paste this info into a reply for me

Microsoft have released a release a fix for this problem today which you may want to try, you can download this "fix"from here. More infomation from Microsoft about this problem is available here

Just for additional info - you can make sure all your video drivers are currently up to date here
