My Internet won't work properly! Help!

Unread postby Xbsnguy » April 20th, 2006, 8:37 pm

Ok, my computer was working fine last night until now. My internet browser will not take me to any site that I type into the url box. I can only access sites that I have saved on my favorite's or by clicking on links. Here is my HJT log. BTW, I ran an ewido scan, and it did not resolve this issue.

Welcome to the Malware removal forums. I will be more than happy to help you work on your problems. Please give me some time to review your log as this can be a lengthy process. I will be back with you as soon as I can. As I am an undergrad my answers will be checked by an expert before I post back.

In the meantime
The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  1. Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  2. Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  3. Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  4. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
  5. Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  6. When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  7. Turn your computer back on.

The Ewido Security Suite is now known as Ewido Anti-Malware. If additional information is needed, click A Quick Guide.
  1. Please download and install Ewido Anti-Malware v3.5. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (watch for alerts that have the word "Heuristic" in them ‑ these may actually be false positives) select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections." If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being.
  2. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  3. Launch Ewido by double‑clicking the "e" icon on your desktop.
  4. The program will now go to the main screen.
  5. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    1. On the left hand side of the main screen click "Update".
    2. Then click on "Start Update".
    3. The update will begin and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. If you are having problems with the updater, click Update Ewido.
    4. After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful".
  6. After the updates are installed, click on Scanner and select "Settings".
    1. Under the bottom section "What to Scan?" select "Scan every file".
    2. Select "OK" and you will return to scanning options.
[*]Click on "Complete System Scan". This can take a while to complete so please be patient.
[*]While the scan is in progress, you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then CHECK or UNCHECK "Perform action on all infections" and click "OK". Note: You will have to watch the scan all the way through and delete items manually.
[*]After the scan has completed, Ewido will create a report.
[*]There will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named "Save report". Click "Save report" [to your desktop].
[*]Exit Ewido Anti-Malware when done.[*]Note: Ewido is a free trial product for 14 days. Since Ewido is a trial version, the realtime guard and automatic update will stop functioning after 14 days (which is the reason we uncheck them during installation). You can use ewido as an on demand scanner (recommended) but you will have to manually update the definition file each time you scan by clicking on “Updateâ€

Please disable Microsoft Antispyware, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon (looks like a target) and click on :
Security Agents Status (Enabled)
Disable Real-time Protection
To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection

Task Manager
I would like you to open the task manager by pressing simeltaniously
Ctrl+Shift+Esc or cntrl /alt/delete
then go to the processes tab and end the following if present:
by: right clicking on and choosing end process.

ViewMgr.exe

Go to /start/control panel/add/remove programs
Uninstall
View point manager

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files::

Click Start. My Computer.
Select the Tools menu Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.

Hello Bob, thanks for your help. I wasn't able to find the 3 Files/Folders you asked me to delete manually however. I followed all your directions. Though I was able to check and fix the ones you gave me to do on HJT.
So here is the HJT log-file you asked for. However, I am still unable to access any site I type in my url bar. My browser just completely refuses to change sites. This must be one stubborn piece of malware :x

Sorry for the delay..

Log looking much better.

I have 1 optional fix for you to consider.
You have iTunesHelper.exe running at Startup. iTunesHelper.exe is a process belonging to Itunes MP3 streaming tool by Apple which allows you to play MP3's. This process speeds up iTunes when it starts, and the program also monitors for connected iPod devices. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

As far as the address bar not working there seems to be an issue with a critical update from microsoft that is doing such things as you describe to HP machines.
You can read about this issue here. Their fix for it has worked for some and not for others. One person has said he removed the patch and all went well.

[quote]SYMPTOMS
After you install security update 908531 (security bulletin MS06-015), you may experience one or more of the following problems:• You cannot access special folders such as "My Documents" or "My Pictures."
• Microsoft Office applications stop responding when you try to save or to open Office files in the "My Documents" folder.
• Office files that are located in the "My Documents" folder cannot be opened.
• If you open a file by clicking Open on the File menu, the application stops responding.
• When you type an address in the Address box in Microsoft Internet Explorer, nothing happens. • When you right-click a file and then click Send To, nothing happens.
• When you expand a folder in Windows Explorer, nothing happens.
• Some third-party applications stop responding when you open or save data in the “My Documentsâ€

Thankyou Bob for your help :). FireFox has been working perfectly and I am very happy with it. But I also have a question about the patch that you mentioned for my IE problem. I went to the site, but I am a tad bit confused about the patch. Is it this: "Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall" ?
