HiJack This Log

Unread postby JoeS » April 19th, 2006, 4:03 pm

My computer has been running very slow, cpu usage goes to 100% quite often when I'm barely running any programs. Also, it's not shutting down right, I have to press the button on the cpu to turn it off. Ran AVG, Adaware, SpyBot, nothing detected. Here is my log:

Hello JoeS

Your hijackthis log doesn't look complete.

Have you already had a go at 'fixing' stuff?? There are legitimate items missing from your log that I would expect to see.

If you have then I would like you to restore the backups that hijackthis would have made.

Run hijackthis, click 'Open the Misc Tools Section'

Click the Backups button at the top, then highlight all the backups and click 'restore'.

Make sure you are in normal mode and not Safe mode, then run hijackthis again and post a fresh log please.

There aren't any obvious signs of problems in your log.. I would like you to run a couple of scans for me and then we can take it from there.

Go here to run a Panda online scan

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.

  1. Install ewido security suite
  2. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..

    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  3. Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  4. The program will now open to the main screen.
  5. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  6. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:

  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close ewido security suite.

Then go to start > My Computer. Right click on your C: drive and click on Properties. Click the Tools tab and then click the Error Checking button. In the window that pops up check the Automatically fix file system errors box and then click 'start'.

You should then get a message to say that the disk check couldn't be performed whilst the disk is in use and do you want to schedule a check on your next restart, click yes.

Then reboot.... your computer should then run a disk check.

When you are back in Windows, post the Panda log, the Ewido Log and a fresh Hijack log and let me know how things are now.

Hello JoeS, I'm not so sure that your problem is a malware problem. When your CPU usage goes to 100% can you tell in task manager which process is running high?

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

This should get rid of any temp files that are clogging up your system, when did you last defragment your drive?

It varies but it is usually one of these three. Firefox.exe, svchost.exe, or explorer.exe. When I would close firefox, the usage would switch to another process.

I defragged about a week ago in Safe Mode, should I do it in regular mode? Does that make a difference?

The computer is working much better today actually. It's been on for about 9 hours without a problem so maybe something worked, the last few days before that, the problem was immediate.

Thanks for letting me know!

Here are some suggestions to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future. I strongly recommend installing the following :

Spyware Blaster - It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
Spyware Guard - It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE-Spyad - IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
I also recommend reading this article written by Tony Klein How did I get infected in the first place
