Hijack This logfile - LOP toolbar

Unread postby John S » January 3rd, 2005, 8:24 pm

Hi, I hope someone can help. I have the LOP toolbar installed on this PC but I don't think it's a result of it being the sponsor program of Messenger Plus as I've already been caught out by that one (or rather my daughters have, grrr...)

I managed to get rid of it that time by following the advice on the Messenger Plus website (re-installing WITH the sponsor program; uninstalling; re-installing WITHOUT the sponsor program). Everything was tickety-boo for a while but now it's back and the same steps have been unsuccesful. I suspect it has installed itself via a different route.

Despite quizzing my daughters I can't find a likely method - either way, I can't get rid of it. I've tried Adaware and Spybot and I now append my Hijack This logfile for someone's perusal.

Many thanks for any advice/assistance.

Hi and welcome to Malware removal - a new forum - although we are not new to the subject. Your just our second customer :)

========================

I would suggest you uninstall messenger Plus 3, while doing so make sure that you uninstall the 'sponcer' programs that were installed with it. It will provide a 'code' that you will need to type in as part of the uninstall process.

Boot to safe mode (F8 at boottime) to run this.

Use 'ctrl' + 'alt' + 'del' (Three keys together) to get taskmanager. Find these processes and 'end task' them.
OR
Use the process viewer in Hijackthis, Config, Misc Tools, Process Viewer, to unload the following running processes.

(if running)
slow cast.exe
MsgPlus.exe"

Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.bquufqhabdsgoqvaavqblz.uk/CN ... WDAkm.html
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BFB60853-CE1E-A76A-BB7D-722473C2B18E} - C:\DOCUME~1\Ami\APPLIC~1\MULTIM~1\boobfirst.exe (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AceBaitUserMeow] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\base proc ace bait\slow cast.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Documents and Settings\Scarlet\My Documents\My Received Files\MsgPlus.exe"
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.h ... xuk10047GB

The following activeX controls will reinstall when(and if) you revisit that website, UNLESS you know they are from a safe source, check to remove.

NOTE: To avoid the risk of any of the above not being found due to them having the 'Hidden' attribute, first make sure that in Folder Options > View hidden and operating system files are set to show:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Or items 8 & 9 from this link :

Then Reboot and post a fresh log for me to check.

Thanks for reply...

Unread postby John S » January 4th, 2005, 9:38 am

... Hi Chris. Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

I suspected very much that it was the Messenger Plus as the PC has been infected with the Lop toolbar once before with it as I said in my first post. I deleted it succesfully (I hoped) following advice from the Messenger Plus website.

My daughters swear they haven't re-installed Messenger Plus since so I wondered if this Lop thing could have been installed via a different route?

Anyhow, when I ran the uninstall program yesterday my AVG kicked in saying it had detected a Trojan. I clicked "cure" (I think) and it carried on quite happily. But you mentioned a code that I had to enter and that reminds me that last time I uninstalled it I had to do that. I didn't have to yesterday so maybe the uninstall didn't work properly?

I don't trust this Messgenger Plus at all, despite all the assurances they give on their site, so my daughter is going to have to try pretty hard to convince me to let her re-install it this time ;-)

I shall give your advice a go this evening as am at work at the moment.

Thank you very much for your advice and time and shall re-post as asked.

When you are clean - I will post some advice for you for the future.

One thing you should start is having a seperate username for the girls, set as a limited user. That way they cannot install ANYTHING without your knowledge.

While on the subject of seperate user accounts - if you already do that, get me a HJT log from each username, that where it could be hiding.

Ah, that's useful...

Unread postby John S » January 4th, 2005, 1:21 pm

... We do have separate accounts but I didn't realise I could tailor what they can do.

That'll please them ;-)

That said it'll mean even more running around for me (Dad, I wanna install this game, Dad, I wanna...)

But preferable to all this nonsense!!

I have been meaning to buy an Idiot's Guide to XP. Should have asked for one for Crimbo. Oh well.

I'll do a scan on their accounts as well - that means getting their passwords off them (they know how to use it - typical eh?)

Oh well, off home now to another evening in front of the PC - but hopefully a more fruitful one! Cheers.

So far so good :-)

Unread postby John S » January 4th, 2005, 6:23 pm

I've followed your instructions and so far, so good. The toolbar and extra window that appears when I open IE have disappeared, along with those pesky desktop icons.

However, in my excitement I forgot to run Hijackthis again.

I figure I should do a fresh reboot before doing so I'll just mention one or two things.

I couldn't open in safe mode straight away - I found an article on the Symantec site that said F8 is tricky to use but it suggested using MSCONFIG and checking safe boot in the Boot tab (or something like that).

That did the trick although when I unchecked it to reboot in, ummm..., normal mode it gave me a window with various options after re-booting.

I checked the Boot normally box (or whatever it said - I'm sure ?! you know what I mean. You may have guessed I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to computers. Give me my old Sinclair ZX81 back any day!! - at least when that went wrong you just turned it off and on again - and hey presto! back to factory settings :-)

The other thing was when I tried uninstalling Messenger Plus it didn't ask for the code, which as I said above, I remember getting last time this happened. And it still appears in my add/remove programs list. It says it can't uninstall it when I try running the uninstall now (as presumably it is uninstalled?) and Windows (or is it? ...) offers to remove it from the list of available uninstalls. I clicked no so far.

... er, anyway, I'm still feeling pretty happy so I'll reboot, do a fresh log and post it below. Thanks for everything so far.

BTW - while I think of it - you're probably wondering how I found your site.

It was through the Tom Coyote forums where you're an administrator. I tried posting there originally but every time I tried it said I wasn't authorised, even though I had just registered.

I tried contacting you as you were a UK admin person but all I could do was click on your website link - and here I am :-)

Logfile below

Unread postby John S » January 4th, 2005, 6:42 pm

Phew! Time for bed soon...

Please find below the logfile. There were two lines that only appeared when I re-ran it in normal mode - they didn't appear when I ran it in safe mode, so I'll copy those from the earlier file and paste them separately so you know which ones they were in case that's of any help.

The two lines that only appeared once I ran hijiackthis in normal mode were:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.bquufqhabdsgoqvaavqblz.uk/CN ... WDAkm.html
ed Files\MsgPlus.exe"
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.h ... xuk10047GB

But these have now been "fixed" and do not appear after re-booting.

Here is the latest file:

I meant to say...

Unread postby John S » January 4th, 2005, 6:49 pm

... the kids are in bed now (and so they should!) so I can't check their accounts. I'm too scared to in case it all comes back ;-)

I'll do so tomorrow. I'm leaving strict instructions not to install anything while I'm away. At least they're back at school tomorrow.

Hi

Well that looks clean now - just those other username accounts to see.

To change them, in your account, find control panel, user accounts.
Change the girls (and any others that you wish to change) to limited accounts - YOU can change thier passwords too :) .

When installing (programs in the future) you may need to temporary change thier status to admin while you install, then change it back. You might like to have a admin username - and give yourself a limited username too, much safer while on the net.

You might like to know that I have a Church with 12 computers, which were win98's - I was always needing to clean them. Since upgrading to winXPpro using limited accounts for the general users, I have yet to need any cleaning, so it does work.

Re adverts - well this site is not yet quite ready - needs some more work doing before the public get here in droves.

OK, thanks...

... I'll run the hijackthis on the other accounts tonight. There's my two daughters and my wife's (what's the better it's been my wife all along ;-)

Re the admin accounts status. I've noticed when I boot in safe mode that there is an extra, admin, account. I'm sure when I first set up the PC that I made myself the administrator.

So do I only have admin rights when it's in safe mode? I think I need to buy a book (I prefer books to help screens).

The idea about giving myself a limited account for everyday use sounds sensible.

*****

My wife said my daughter went potty this morning when she told her that Messenger Plus had been uninstalled. The Messenger program is still there but this plus program must be really special for my daughter to get so upset about it (aside from the rubbish that comes bundled in with it).

Ah well, when she can buy her own PC she can do what she likes with it ;-) Although I bet I'll still be running after her providing tech support. What are Dads for? :-)

*****

I'll post later with the logs from the other accounts. Cheers.

It's back :-(

Unread postby John S » January 5th, 2005, 5:14 pm

Only to be expected I suppose. I guess it was hiding in one of the other accounts. I have prepared logs for each account, rebooting in between each scan.

I think I know which lines to fix but I figure I'd best wait for your advice.

It's not all bad - the desktop icons didn't return.

My daughter compromised (persudaded me to let her...) install MSN Messenger 7 (beta). I figured as it's from MS then at least it's not full of nasties. I know some would disagree, but they probably haven't got teenage daughters ;-)

Maybe I should also add that teenage daughter is using WinMX to share files. (I think that's the name of the program). I'm vaguely aware that this is frowned upon as there is a strong chance that the files (MP3s mostly) are breaking someone's copywrite. And that the programs used to share them often come bundled with 'extras'. I looked at WinMX's website and it seemed fairly convincing, but so did Messenger Plus's.

What's your advice/opinion on that? She's gonna hit the roof if I tell her to get rid of that as well, but if it's illegal then there isn't any question about it really. I know that there's debate about it's not the progam itself that's illegal, it's the sort of files you share, but more than that I don't know.

Anyway, here goes: Firstly my log (Account=John)

hi

Sorry its been a little while for me to reply - we in this household have this latest flu - its not nice.

=====================
OK winMX is not bad - check this list of known good and bad p2p programs:-

http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/

Just ensure they check each file (with the AVG7) they download before using.

Re the admin account in safe mode - yes you should have one - its a safety feature incase your main account is crippled.

In these fixes below you may not find those bad files to delete or endtask - just check each time - if not there all OK.

================
OK own username. (John)

Use 'ctrl' + 'alt' + 'del' (Three keys together) to get taskmanager. Find these processes and 'end task' them.
OR
Use the process viewer in Hijackthis, Config, Misc Tools, Process Viewer, to unload the following running processes.

Plan bits.exe

Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AceBaitUserMeow] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\base proc ace bait\Plan bits.exe

Then Reboot to safe mode (F8 on boot) and delete the following files/folders:-
NOTE: To avoid the risk of any of the above not being found due to them having the 'Hidden' attribute, first make sure that in Folder Options > View hidden and operating system files are set to show:

Or items 8 & 9 from this link :

Folder > C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\base proc ace bait\

Then Reboot and post a fresh log for me to check.

by no means least (Scarlet):

This is the one with messenger plus 3 still active.
Messenger plus 3 - is not of itself a malware program. But because of its association with the sponsers that is uses, we in the anti-malware community cannot recommend to anyone. - BUT it is optional. Its like buying some good clean things from known villens - some people will, some wont.

Use 'ctrl' + 'alt' + 'del' (Three keys together) to get taskmanager. Find these processes and 'end task' them.

Me again...

Unread postby John S » January 6th, 2005, 7:05 pm

... I didn't get a chance to do this tonight - been having separate problems with my other PC (an old Packard Bell W98 job - it crashes more and more often these days, but that's a separate problem altogether).

I'll give it a go tomorrow evening. Also I tried logging on to your board at work today but when I logged in I just got a blank screen. I can read the board OK (before logging in) but obviously I can't post.

It must be a problem at my work's end as I'm OK at home. I've been able to log in at work before so that's a weird one...

Anyway, thanks for everything so far and I'll re-post tomorrow evening.

Phew! Ok FIVE logs for you :-)

Unread postby John S » January 7th, 2005, 7:23 pm

Ok, here are the latest logs (and last maybe??)

There are five as I added a limited account for myself as you suggested and I thought I ought to add the log for that as well.

Everything seems to have gone OK. It hung a couple of times when logging into a couple of the accounts; one of them I had to turn off at the switch as Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't even do anything. Oddly I didn't get told off when I rebooted. Or maybe it's only W98 that tells you off for doing that?

Anyway...

I should add that not all the files and folders were there to delete. I think this was because I deleted them when in my own account so presumably were deleted from all accounts?? I did have all the view options ticked as advised.

Also, when I deleted the ballbooksupport.exe file from Ami's account there were other exe files in the folder I didn't like the look of. I deleted the whole folder (ahem). One of them was had an icon that was like a 777 and looked similar to some of the gambling icons that I had. The long file name was something like Stop File Reht (I can't recall the third word - but it wasn't a proper word).

And when I re-scanned Ami's account I found this entry:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.bpmjuvnjdjssuvpqnamdjxa.us/V ... QsBmj.html

I'm sure it wasn't there first time - you certainly hadn't highlighted it, but again, I tool it upon myself to 'fix' it.

It was after straying off this path that Ami's account hung when I rebooted. Yes, I did tell myself off. But it was OK when I booted again.

The log above was the subsequent scan.

There was also a reference to Messenger Plus3 in Scarlet's log that I took it upon myself to delete/fix that you hadn't advised me to.

Funnily enough Scarlet's account also hung for a while when rebooting - but it was OK after a while.

I'll follow your instructions to the letter next time :-)

I hope I haven't ruined things...

Well, I hope you like what you see in these logs. It's been a great Friday night!

I'll look forward to seeing your reply. Hope you have a good weekend.

BTW - I still couldn't log in at work today. I can log into other messageboards that I use (Barnet FC's board mostly) so I don't know what's going on there. I just get a blank page after logging in.

Thank you very much for all your help - all that remains is to tell elder daughter that I deleted her password! She's not gonna be impressed...

Are there any dodgy programs that she's likely to seek out that can stop me doing this to her account? I'll bet they're not healhty either. Pity XP doesn't let me re-instate her password then she wouldn't know that I could do it!

A suggestion for Mr Gates perhaps?
