HJT log - 1on1/sexpass/dialler problems. Please help.

Unread postby BrianB » April 26th, 2005, 4:38 pm

Hi there, hope you can help, I'm pulling my hair out.....

I have a rogue dialer that kicks me offline after a minute or so and leaves shortcuts to Sexpass and 1on1 on my desktop. Things I've run include Norton AV 2005, Spybot S&D, AdAware and MS AntiSpyware (beta) all latest versions & definition files but no change. Spybot reports presence of 'Porn Hijacker' but doesn't clean it up.

Here's the HJT log. Thanks for looking.

Hi

First of all please go to the below sites and run an online scan. Make sure you have them set to Auto Clean

Housecall
Panda Active scan

Now for the below fix to work you will need to disable MS Antispyware as this will prevent any changes we make. You can re-enable when we have finished.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: CDllBho Object - {5A5B6916-ED71-4531-8018-E792DD44156E} - C:\WINDOWS\dd.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {ED103D9F-3070-4580-AB1E-E5C179C1AE41} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Norton Personal Firewall] jah.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NAV Auto Protect] navprotect.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [McAfee Windows Protection] mcafee32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [1De0SSf] C:\WINDOWS\tqhomqt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MsnExplorer] C:\WINDOWS\shch.exe /i
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Norton Personal Firewall] jah.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Norton Personal Firewall] jah.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

You will now need to view hidden files and folder. Do this by using Windows Explorer then TOOLS->FOLDER OPTIONS->VIEW->SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\tqhomqt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\shch.exe

Now do a search on your pc for the following files and delete them if present:

jah.exe
navprotect.exe
mcafee32.exe

Still in Windows Explorer go to TOOLS->FOLDER OPTIONS->VIEW->DO NOT SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS

Empty your recycle bin.

After that, Reboot run another Hijackthis scan and post back the new log here.

Hi P3-450,

Thanks for your time !

I did my best to follow your instructions but couldn't run the online scans from Housecall & Panda Active scan. Pureseeker now has control of my Internet Explorer home page and won’t let me access either of these sites. I carried on with the rest of your instructions.

I ran HJT scan and killed off all you said, also killed off “R0 - ……Start Page = pureseeker.comâ€

Pureseeker

Unread postby BrianB » April 28th, 2005, 3:36 pm

Hi P3-450,

After my last post I still had the Pureseeker problem (1on1 & Sexpass on the desktop, browser redirected to pureseeker.com, hard core pop up) so today I had another look.

I checked out a dozen reports from other cleanups of Pureseeker and tried to glean some common threads.

I saw that "O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Norton Personal Firewall] jah.exe" had re-appeared so I killed that off like you said. I also deleted C:\WINDOWS\SVCHOST2.EXE.

Rebooted, seemed clean, ran the Housecall scan you recommended and it came up clean. Ran Norton, MS AntiSpyware, AdAware and SpyBot. I've used the PC all afternoon, used dial up thru AOL and Explorer thru ADSL and the problem hasn't come back.

For now, let's call this one closed. But I reserve the right to be back in a flash if it reappears ! ;)

Thanks again.

Brian.

- - - - - - - - - -

P.S. For what it's worth, for pureseeker infections, here are my guesses for HJT entries that should be looked at closely.

Browse.exe

I couldn’t find Browse.exe on a clean XP machine.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Messanger] C:\WINDOWS.000\browse.exe /i

(Note the misspelt Messenger, that’s got to be a giveaway)

Ssvr.exe
(Note that the filename has a number of variations, I’ve seen these

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSOfficeCfg] C:\WINDOWS\ssvr.exe /I
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSOfficeCfg] C:\WINDOWS\ssv32r.exe /i
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SchedulerMgr] C:\WINDOWS\ssvr.exe /i
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QTSvc] C:\WINDOWS\ssvr.exe /i

Any entry with HotXXX.exe

Any entry with Pureseeker

The R0 section will have the redirection of your browser to pureseeker.com – delete this entry.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.pureseeker.com

Dodgy Host files
"The original svchost.exe file is located in the c:\windows\System32 folder (or C:\WINNT\system32) folder; a copy may exist in the c:\windows\System32\dllcache (or C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache) folder.

In ALL other occurrences, a svchost.exe file is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm, hence you should regularly check your computer for all instance of *host*.exe. Note also that a few trojans mix the letters before "host", like scvhost.exe or add numbers after "host", like svchost3.exe
"

They are normally in the c:\windows directory. I’ve seen

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinAmpAgent] C:\WINDOWS\svchst.exe /I
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Runner] C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe /i
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Scheduler] C:\WINDOWS\svcshost.exe /i
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MsnExplorer] C:\WINDOWS\shch.exe /I
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MsnExplorer] C:\WINDOWS\svchost2.exe /i

Odd looking filenames
Lastly, have a good look at any process running that has the same name as the .exe file that it’s running, especially if it is running from c:\windows.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xggqkfny] C:\WINDOWS\system32\xggqkfny.exe

Hi

Your log is now clean :)

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  1. Spybot Search & Destroy- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  6. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
