Google Chrome ?trackid=sp-006 on 2 successive new computers

Unread postby VT Author » January 17th, 2015, 5:37 pm

New Computer with ?trackid=sp-006 at Google Chrome URL bar

Dear Helpful Computer Gurus -
(I kept running over - like double over - on characters when I cut & pasted the notebook texts, so I attached them.)

Symptoms:
(I'll try to be concise).
As w/a other of your users...

New ASUS computer bought for Christmas. Comp was Win 8.1 touchscreen enabled. I downloaded Chrome and enabled it as primary browser; first searches came up in German. I downloaded Avast. Things got immediately much worse – rapid-fire popup ads; search results that had little to nothing to do with search terms but resulted in related popups; the tag “?trackid=sp-006” added to every Chrome URL. IE/FF not attempted.

Restarted computer; computer started in safe mode and took 90 minutes to start. >1200 corrupted/infected files found. I tried to download a picture of the "HAL-9000" to post on FB - it routed me to German Google site... and omitted "Bilder," German term for "Image." Funny. Except not really. The second time around, it did include "Bilder."

Computer returned to Bestbuy.

2nd comp bought – different system, standard laptop, still Win 8.1. Downloaded Chrome. Chrome automatically attached to taskbar; first time I clicked on it, came up as http://www.google.com?trackid=sp-006.

Stopped using Chrome and started IE. I did not have the same problem. Uninstalled Chrome and tried downloading from Google rather than Chrome site – problem recurred. Could delete the added search tag and complete searches, but I could find no FAQ’s that satisfactorily addressed this question – although there seem to be many individuals all with this issue, all w/in ~<2 mo. I never put Avast on this system.

This system did come with “Webroot,” which has failed to pick up the problem.

My husband brought it to his tech people; not sure what they did, but when he brought it back, sys appeared clean for cpl days. Tag recurred after visiting a school website. Husband's team recommended Malwarebytes; it picked up nothing.

FB friend recommended removing the trackid tag from Chrome settings, which I did; the problem recurred in an hour.

The URL tag continues to a) route me through Germany; b) render searches meaningless; and c) whenever I DO remove that tag, the searches seem to continue to go through Germany. In addition, the system gets slower and slower and slower, and the keyboard seems to have difficulty keeping up with my keystrokes.

My ability to return this second computer runs out within the week – I don’t wish to return it, as I suspect I’ll just be stuck with the same problem again.

Tx much,

JH

(Again, I did try to cut & paste FRST & Addition texts, but they put me over by 80,000 char, so I had to attach.)

Hello VT Author, and welcome to the forum.

My name is nunped and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Here are some guidelines for the cleaning process to run as easy as possible.

  1. Please read this topic: ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
  2. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only! Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  3. You must have Administrator rights permissions for this computer.
  4. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  5. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  6. Only post your problem at one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  7. Only reply to this thread. Do not start another thread.
  8. The absence of symptoms does not imply the absence of malware. Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean".
  9. No Reply Within 3 Days will result in your topic being closed!

Read through these instructions with your full attention.
Please ask first if you have any doubts.

I am currently reviewing your logs and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions.

Hi VT Author,

Please run this scan:
Step 1 - AdwCleaner - Scan Only
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode, save it to your desktop.
  • Close ALL open programs, including your Internet browsers.
  • Right click on adwcleaner.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run it.
  • Click on Scan.
When the scan finishes, you'll see a message on the product window: "Pending. Please uncheck elements you don't want to remove."
  • Press the Report button to produce the scan report.
  • A logfile C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt will automatically open. ([Rn] n = number of run)
  • Please post the content of the C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt logfile in your next reply.

Dear Nunped,
1) Thank you so much,
2) Webroot is calling Adwcleaner itself Malware, FYI, and is prompting me to get rid of it, so I'll need your recommendations about how to handle that as well when we finish.

Thank you SO much for your time.

Hi Julie!

You are very welcome :)
Don't worry about adwCleaner being flagged by Webroot. It's a false positive based on the program behaviour.

Multiple Anti Virus programs

  • It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs installed:
    AV: McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware (Enabled - Up to date) {ADA629C7-7F48-5689-624A-3B76997E0892}
    AV: Webroot SecureAnywhere (Enabled - Up to date) {66A6FE14-08CB-F415-3742-517201416109}
  • Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer.
  • Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.
  • Please remove one of them then reboot your computer.

After that.....

Fix with FRST
  • Click Start
  • Type notepad.exe in the search programs and files box and click Enter.
  • A blank Notepad page should open.
    • Copy and Paste the following script into Notepad, Do not include the words Code: select all
    • (Click the select all button next to code to select the entire script).
    Code: Select all
    HKU\S-1-5-21-2660173606-927079686-655349376-1001\...\MountPoints2: {8c5d8923-db53-11e3-824e-806e6f6e6963} - "D:\WRSetupCD.exe"
    SearchScopes: HKU\S-1-5-21-2660173606-927079686-655349376-1001 -> DefaultScope {0633EE93-D776-472f-A0FF-E1416B8B2E3A} URL =
    SearchScopes: HKU\S-1-5-21-2660173606-927079686-655349376-1001 -> {0633EE93-D776-472f-A0FF-E1416B8B2E3A} URL =
    CHR DefaultSearchURL: Profile 1 -> https://www.google.de/search?q={searchTerms}?trackid=sp-006
    C:\ProgramData\SetStretch.exe
    C:\ProgramData\SetStretch.VBS

    EmptyTemp:
    CMD: ipconfig /flushdns

  • Save it next to FRST.exe on your Desktop as filename fixlist.txt
  • NOTE: It's important that both files, FRST/FRST64 and fixlist.txt are saved in the same location or the fix will not work.
  • Right-click FRST.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Press the Fix button just once. Then wait.
  • When finished, it will create a Fixlog.txt log on your Desktop.
  • Please post the content of the Fixlog.txt in your next reply.

Please, tell me how the computer is running after this.

Dear awesome ones,

Below, please find the Fixlog printout.

When I click the Chrome button, I no longer get the trackid tag. The keyboard still can't keep up, but naturally this could be something completely unrelated. First, thanks for getting rid of the bloody tag - am I safe to go ahead and make Chrome my primary browser again? I hate IE. And second, can I recontact you if the damn tag shows up again as it has a few times in the past? And then, finally, what the heck is/was this thing and what did we just do?

Thank you thank you thank you,
Julie Hoover

Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

EmptyTemp: => Removed 711.4 MB temporary data.

The system needed a reboot.

Hi Julie!

I still need a couple more scans to ensure that everything is good:

Step 1 - Scan with FRST
  • Right-click FRST.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button. ... When finished a log will be created, FRST.txt.
  • Please post the content of the FRST.txt in your next reply.

Step 2 Trend Micro™ HouseCall - scan. Image
Please download Trend Micro™ HouseCall Launcher-64bit Copyright © 2013 Trend Micro Incorporated, save it to your desktop.
  • Click the HouseCall icon on your desktop.
Windows Vista + Win7/Win8 users Right-click on the icon and choose "Run As Administrator"... if prompted by UAC, allow it.
The latest program and definition files will be downloaded... see progress bar.
  • Accept the license agreement terms... then Press the Next button.
  • Press the Scan Now button.
HouseCall will start scanning your system. This takes a while, be patient... let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • If infected...Save the scan results as a Text file ... save it to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste the saved scan results file in your next reply.

Hi, Nunped -
Once again, too many characters. Have to put as attachments.
Not sure if you want the Addition text as well, so I'm putting that in, too, as an attachment...
HouseCall --> No Threats Found.

Hi Julie,

Just a couple of things to clean it up:

  • Click Start
  • Type notepad.exe in the search programs and files box and click Enter.
  • A blank Notepad page should open.
    • Copy/Paste the contents of the code box below into Notepad.

Hi Julie!

Still no trackid tag! YAY, I can't tell you how incredibly excited I am!!!

I'm glad to know that :)

Please please please tell me what the heck this is/was!

Well, I can't know for sure. It usually happens associated with a few "Potentialy Unwanted Programs", but I didn't saw any of them installed in your system. You probably got it while online, by clicking or installing something inadvertedly.

As far as I can see your computer appears to be free from malware.

Now, some clean-up steps:

Delfix - Delete Fix Processes Image
  1. Please download delfix by Xplode and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on delfix.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run it.
An application window opens with check box options... The "Remove disinfection tools" option is checked by default.
  3. Check the following boxes... then press Run:
    • Activate UAC
    • Remove disinfection tools --> keep this checked
    • Create registry backup
    • Purge system restore
When finished, Notepad will open DelFix.txt. The log will be located at the root of the system drive, C:\DelFix.txt.
  4. Please copy and paste the contents of the DelFix.txt file in your next reply.

Don't forget to re-enable your security programs!

Stay informed.
To help minimize the chances of becoming re-infected, please read.
Computer Security - a short guide to staying safer online

If your computer is running slowly after your clean up, please read.
What to do if your Computer is running slowly

Please reply to this post so I know you have read it. If you don't have any further questions this thread will be closed.

Safe surfing! ;)

Re: Google Chrome ?trackid=sp-006 on 2 successive new comput

Unread postby VT Author » January 23rd, 2015, 6:07 pm

Dear Nunped,
Hm. All I downloaded was Chrome - it was the very first thing I did, and it was right there. Must've been something with the Chrome I downloaded, but I notice I'm not the only one.

Anyway, thanks a lot, you rescued my hard drive!

Here's your log.

Take care,
J

Hi, Nunped -
I don't know whether this has anything to do with anything, but the keyboard slowness that I mentioned initially seems to be getting worse tonight, esp on my Gmail acc't.

Um. Nunped.

It's back.

I was watching Gordon Ramsay's Ultimate Cookery Course online, and it recommended that I update Java.
I do? Oh, Okay, fine.

So I did.
McAfee went nuts.
I did what it told me to, then restarted the bloody computer, and now the bloody trackid thing is back. Pretty sure you wouldn't advise me to shake the computer, but that's what I feel like doing.
