You have been infected by W32/Sdbot-RY, a backdoor trojan which allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data.

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we can't guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found here

I suggest you do the following immediately:

1. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

2. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can definitely help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities.

Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.

**************************************

If you would like to try to clean your computer, please follow these instructions:

**************************************

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

**************************************

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

**************************************

In your next post, please include:
  • C:\Vundofix.txt
  • new HijackThis log
  • uninstall list

This computer is just for home use only. we do not use this for bank transacting or anything. Just for browsing and chatting. so i will choose just to clean my computer.

btw, Norton Encyclopedia recommend this:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/av ... .awax.html

I don't know if I have to do it so maybe you should check it if it can be a solution. Also geedc.dll was not in the system32 anymore (since yesterday before doing this). but vundo detected it still.
after doing this things, my computer is still sending files (i know this because my internet became slower still and the "sent" activity in the connection is muh higher han the recieved ones. although I do not do anything, it keeps from doing so. (Just reporting  )

You may want to print out these instructions or copy them to notepad since you will not have internet access during some of our fixes.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

***********************************

Some security programs with active monitoring processes are known to interfere with automatic scanners and can actually prevent HJT fixes from taking effect.

Please turn off or disable any of the following programs you may have:

Microsoft Anti-Spyware

*Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray again to open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

1. Click on the Options menu and choose Settings.
2. In the left pane column click on "Real Time Protection".
3. Under Startup Options, uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents on startup (recommended)"
4. Under Real-time spyware threat protection, uncheck and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection" (recommended).
5. Click the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Finally, right-click on the MSAS icon in the system tray and select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware".

***********************************

I notice you already have Ewido Anti-Malware installed:
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

***********************************

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Select CashBack

Shareaza version 2.2.0.0
*Shareaza is optional; however, any time you are running any type of P2P application, you are much more prone to infection by malware. I suggest you remove it.

***********************************

Go to Start | Run and type this in the box: services.msc
  • Locate these services, 'Command Service , Network Monitor, Process Initialization, and Windows print spooler version C' then right click and select properties.
  • Under Service Status: select Stop
  • In the drop down box labeled, Startup Type: select Disabled

***********************************

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

OK, I've done almost everything you told me EXCEPT the scanning of Kaspersky because my computer actually do not accept pop-ups (I don't know why and I don't have a pop-up blocker, I know this for sure. it also do not accept Javascripts ang links.

well, going back, about this:
agrarianmonk wrote:Go to Start | Run and type this in the box: services.msc

Locate these services, 'Command Service , Network Monitor, Process Initialization, and Windows print spooler version C' then right click and select properties.

Under Service Status: select Stop

In the drop down box labeled, Startup Type: select Disabled

Do I have to reverse the method after doing this? I mean do I have to put it back? or just leave it as it is already.

Thanks for the help.

well, going back, about this:
agrarianmonk wrote:Go to Start | Run and type this in the box: services.msc

Locate these services, 'Command Service , Network Monitor, Process Initialization, and Windows print spooler version C' then right click and select properties.

Under Service Status: select Stop

In the drop down box labeled, Startup Type: select Disabled

Do I have to reverse the method after doing this? I mean do I have to put it back? or just leave it as it is already.

No, you definitely do not want to reverse the method because those services are bad. Actually, you shouldn't even be able to find them b/c we've deleted them.

Congratulations, your log looks clean!

First, Lets reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Let's also rehide hidden files:

To hide Hidden Files

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. SelectTools menu
4. Click Folder Options.
5. Select the View Tab.
6. Select Do not show hidden files and folders in the Hidden files and folders section.
7. Check Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
8. Check the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
9. Click Yes.
10. Click OK.

To prevent reinfection, I would strongly recommend that you be sure to update to Window XP SP2. An unpatched version of windows is highly susceptible to reinfection. You can update to SP2 at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

There are a few other very important things you should follow to avoid getting reinfected:

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
See here to choose one

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

  1. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  2. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  3. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  4. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  5. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  6. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  7. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
