Unread postby rig2 » April 2nd, 2006, 8:00 am

CW shredder picked up Look2me. It couldn't remove it. Spybot, Adaware, Microsoft antispyware & Ewido failed. Found msginadll in Windows System 32 (XP). (Don't know if this relevant) HijackThis provided this log:-
PS - I don't know a lot about computers!!

Hi rig2, Welcome to MalWare Removal !!

This file "msgina.dll" is a windows file.
Did Spybot find it ??

I do not see "Look2Me" but I do see "Vundo"
Lets take care of that first !!

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure

I need you to disable a few programs first, as they may hinder the removal of some entries
We will reenable these when we are finished
Please disable Microsoft Antispyware
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon (looks like a target) and click on :
Security Agents Status (Enabled)
Disable Real-time Protection

To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection

Also please disable TeaTimer
Open Spybot Search & Destroy
In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
Expand the "Tools" menu.
Click "Resident".
Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy

Also please disable Spyware Doctor
From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard"

Download VundoFix.exe© by Atribune to your desktop.

Run VundoFix
Double-click VundoFix.exe
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task
You will receive a message saying "vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less" Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to "remove the files", click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
The .txt file will be in C:\Vundofix.txt
Turn your computer back on and bootup, run HijackThis and post a fresh HiJackThis log and the C:\vundofix.txt here

Thanks for your help. I found msgina.dll as a result of following some removal instructions on http://www.pchell.com/support/look2me.shtml - I didn't try to remove it in case I caused some damage.

I'm afraid I've fallen at the first hurdle re your instructions - when I right-click on Microsoft Antispyware "Security Agents Status" is not one of the options. So I opened it & under Tools found Realtime Protection - Internet Agent - System Agent - Application Agent. Any of these any good?

Sorry, I had missed a step ! lets try again :

Open Microsoft Anti-Spyware
Click on the Options menu, then Settings
Select Real Time Protection from the left column

Uncheck the following :
Enable (MSAS) Security Agents
Enable real-time spyware threat protection

Click the Save button
Right-click on the MSAS tray icon, select Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware
Click Yes in the dialog that comes up

How is your system running now ??

Your log looks clean!!

Here are a few tools that I recommend for protecting your system and reduce the risk of infection again !!

Real Time Prevention
SpywareBlaster© by Javacool Software
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page
IESpyad© by EHowes : This will add several hundred Restricted Sites to the Restricted Site Zone in IE.

File Cleaners (temp, prefetch, cookie, etc)
2000/XP Only
ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune
All Windows
CCleaner© by CCleaner.com

Spyware Scanners:
Ad-aware SE© by Lavasoft : Provides protection and removal of trojans, dialers, malware, browser hijackers, and tracking components
Spybot - Search & Destroy© by Safer Networking : Detects and removes spyware of different kinds from your computer

Update Java :
The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6
Go to Start, Control Panel
Double-click the Java applet (coffee cup)
Find the Update button or tab in the Java control panel
Update Java, and reboot
**Manual Update**
Download and Install Java Runtime Environment

Windows Update:
It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks
Windows Update

Firewalls:
If you have an "always on" internet connection, such as DSL or Cable, I recommend a Firewall.
A firewall will make your pc invisible to the outside world and will filter the outgoing and incoming traffic on your pc.
For a good idea of how vulnerable your system(s) are go to GRC
Scroll down to "Shields Up" Click on "Proceed" Then click on "Common Ports"to scan your ports.
Very good Firewalls :
ZoneAlarm Firewall© by Zone Labs
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall© by Sunbelt

Alternative Browsers :
Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness
FireFox© by Mozilla
Opera© by Opera Software ASA

Always keep your Antivirus & Spyware Removal Tools current with the latest definitions and updates !!

Using these tools and keeping them updated will reduce the risk of future infections!!

Do you have any questions??

Stand Up and Be Counted
You have been a Victim of {Vundo} Spyware !

Thank You !!
