:x Hello. I was infected with winfixer a month ago and found nick's site to help me with it. You are a godsend. :) Now i am infected with something else. I tried fixing it with Ad-aware, smitrefix, and avg. Nothing has worked. I keep on getting ads for WinAntiVirusPro2006. It has slowed down my comps performance, messed up the way windows come up and are shown. Here is the Hijack log. I hope you guys can help.

You have a new variant of a Vundo infection and our specialists need to analyze the file. Please do the following and advise me when it is done.

Download Submit File Packer

Highlight the entries listed below in bold and right-click,then select Copy.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfd.dll

Then start the file packer program and right click in the white box and select paste to paste the copied file names in the field.

Then press the Continue button.

It will create an archive with these files and a small log on your Desktop that starts with a name like requested-file[date].cab.

Rename this file to jkhfd.cab

Then go to:
http://www.atribune.org/submit-malware.php
and fill in the required fields and browse to the chinger006.cab file on your desktop. Finally click on the Send File button

You may want to print out these instructions or copy them to notepad since you will not have internet access during some of our fixes.

***************************************

Some security programs with active monitoring processes are known to interfere with automatic scanners and can actually prevent HJT fixes from taking effect. Please temporarily disable (not uninstall) the following programs:

Spyware Doctor

1. From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
2. Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

Windows Defender(Beta2)

1. Click on "Tools"
2. Click on "General Settings"
3. Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
4. Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
5. Click "Save"

***************************************

You are running MyWebSearch (or MyBar). This is not technically malware, but it is thought to be bad by many experts and it will bring malware with it. There are safer alternatives available such as the Google toolbar. I recommend that you remove it. Here are the components to fix with HJT and you will need to remove the main program as well:

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

My Web Search
My Web Search (Smiley Central or FWP product as applicable)
My Way Speedbar (Smiley Central or other FWP as applicable)
My Way Speedbar (AOL and Yahoo Messengers) (beta users only)
My Way Speedbar (Outlook, Outlook Express, and IncrediMail)
Search Assistant - My Way

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

***************************************

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

***************************************

Download smitRem.exe ©noahdfear, and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop (in Internet Explorer, right click on Panda ActiveScan link select "Copy Shortcut" then right click on your desktop and select "Paste Shortcut" or in FireFox right-click the link and select "Save Link As" and save it to your desktop).

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Close ewido anti-malware.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
    • Enter your Country
    • Enter your State/Province
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send
    • Select either Home User or Company
    • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt, the Ewido Log, and C:\vundofix.txt by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

all done

Unread postby cisouna » March 28th, 2006, 1:39 am

Here is all the reports except the Ewido log. It accidently got deleted. Ewido found 13 items and deleted them. After scanning with HJT two of hte items I was suppose to check to fix were not present. They are 02-BHO: ATLDistrib Object..... and 04-HKLM\..\Run: [Spyaxe].... After running panda scan I was told there were still 20 or so malicious items. Thankyou for your help. :) Incident Status Location

It looks like Vundo didn't get completely taken care of. Good thing Atribune just updated his tools, so I'll need you to delete your old one and download the new one from the site again:

*******************************

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

*******************************

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://in.boobtropolis.com/cgi-bin/show ... /2124294:A
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: DosSpecFolder Object - {3E1BEA96-02D9-4992-B508-9B51819D9D86} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfd.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: geebb - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geebb.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HJT.

********************************

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

*********************************

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please delete these files/folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pmkhf.dll << this file
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MyWay << this folder
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\ << this folder

**********************************

Reboot into normal mode, and post a fresh HijackThis log and C:\vundofix.txt

I downloaded the new vundo but it did not find any infected files. The items that I was suppose to check on the HJT were not present. I ran the ATF cleaner successfully. I also deleted the 2 my way folders, but the file "pmkhf.dll" was not found. I hope this fixed it. :) Here is a fresh HJT log. Thankyou for all your help once again.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Congratulations, your log looks clean!

First, Lets reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Let's enable your security programs

Spyware Doctor

1. From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
2. Check "Activate OnGuard".

Windows Defender(Beta2)

1. Click on "Tools"
2. Click on "General Settings"
3. Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
4. Check "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
5. Click "Save"

You are running an out-of-date Java. An out-of-date Java is extremely prone to exploitation by malware and viruses. Therefore, for security purposes, please update to the latest version here. After updating, please go to Add/Remove programs and remove any previous versions of Java.

There are a few other very important things you should follow to avoid getting reinfected:

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
See here to choose one

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

  1. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  2. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  3. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  4. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  5. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  6. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  7. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

:) Thankyou so very much for all your hard work. My computer thanks you too. I will recomend this site to anyone that I come across that is having problems. I don't know if this is a result of all the infections, but sometimes when I try to shutdown indiviual windows and explorer they dont go away and bring up the desktop screen as it should. Then I have to go to task manager and restart the computer. It's more of a nuisance than anything. Thankyou once again.
