Rivarts.A Trojan

Unread postby playmofire » March 23rd, 2006, 6:43 pm

A Microsoft AntiSpyware scan showed up something called Rivarts.A and rated as serious. I suspect it came in through MSN Messenger which I downloaded yesterday. It doesn't show up when I scan with Spybot Search and Destroy, or AdAware or XoftSpy (which claims to be able to remove it!) or BT Yahoo Anti-spy, SpyWareDoctor or Avast anti-virus. I've got ZoneAlarm Pro running and SpywareBlaster as well, so how it got in I don't know. Other antispyware has also failed, as has trying to get rid of it in safe mode.

Here's the log:

Hi playmofire ,

Welcome to Malware Removal Forums.

As we work together to resolve you problem please read the instructions carefully.
If you have question please don't hesitate to ask
The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other problems.
Post your replies to this thread.
Since there may other issues with your system besides your original symptoms please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean."

Let's hope you don't have Rivarts.A since it's a keylogger.

Ready? Let's go.
====================

Update your ewido Malware Remover
====================

Download WinPFind.zip

Extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Open the C:\WinPFind folder and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
Click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish.
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log file at C:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt.
Pleased copy that log to your next reply.
====================

Run ewido Malware Remover

Click on Scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says 'Perform action with all infections' then choose clean and click OK.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report - click it.
Save the report.txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, DO NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!
====================

Reboot your PC in Normal Mode
====================

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
2. A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
3. Enter your Country
4. Enter your State/Province
5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
6. Select either Home User or Company
7. Click the big Scan Now button
8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
11. Post Panda scan results in your next reply
====================

Please post the following:
New HJT Log
ewido Log
Panda Scan Log

Thanks,

I've done what you said and eveything seeemd to go ok except that when opening WinPFind folder in safe mode there was no WinPFind.exe to click. There was a OldTimer Tools icon which when clicked on had ascan option, so I used that. Hope that was right.

Here is the WinPFind report:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

A follow up to my reply.

A run of MS Antispyware shows Rivarts.A there.
If I remove opr quarantine Rivarts.A with MS Antispyware, is it safe to go on sites where I have to use passwords etc until my next reboot?

Hi playmofire,

Thanks for the logs. I'm looking them over now and will get back with you as soon as possible.

Do you do any financial transactions with this account? Banking, PayPal?
Those are critical so I would not chance it. If it's just passwords to sites..then it's your choice. At this point I don't know if MSAS is picking up a false positive or the actual infection.
Since Panda say's it will detect it and it came back clean I have to wonder.

Can you give the the message it is displaying.

Sorry, the one MSAS displays. If it gives a file or registry reference.

I see there are a couple items disbled from startup.
Open HiJackThis
Click on Open the Misc tools Section button
Click the boxGenerate StartupList Log
Click Yes at the prompt
When the list is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Thanks

I'll have to reboot to run MSAS again to get the message. I'll make the changes to HiJackThis then, too, and get back to you in about 10 minutes.

Hi there again.

Here's what MSAS has to say:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mchInjDrv
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mchInjDrv\Enum 0 Root\LEGACY_MCHINJDRV\0000
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mchInjDrv\Enum Count 1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mchInjDrv\Enum NextInstance 1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mchInjDrv Type 1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mchInjDrv ErrorControl 0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mchInjDrv Start 4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mchInjDrv ImagePath \??\C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\mc210.tmp
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mchInjDrv DeleteFlag 1

And here's the HiJackThis Startup List:

StartupList report, 25/03/2006, 17:55:30

Hi playmofire,

Thank you for the information from MSAS. Very helpful

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mchInjDrv

MchInjDrv is a third-party driver/library used by many security applications to provide process-protection. MchInjDrv (or the Mad code hook injection driver) provides a library to allow security product developers to inject a DLL into every process from kernel-mode.

There are products such as spysweeper, a2 and Trojan Hunter that use it. So it is likely that Spyware Doctor is using it also.
I says this because there are no signs of Rivarts.A in your proccess or resgistry.
This is a false positive.

Your log is clean.
Only note:
You have uninstalled Norton Anti-virus which is shown missing from start up. If you want to clean that up I can provide a link for you if you wish.

I too am leaving for a few hours.

Thanks,
Rogue

That's good news, and many thanks for your help. Yes, I have got rid of Norton after many occasions in the past year when running LiveUpdate meant my email no longer worked. I'd be grateful for the link.

Am I right in thinking that uninstalling Spyware Doctor and then reinstalling it will solve the problem?

Unistalling Spyware Doctor would not guarantee solving the problem. Since they know Trojan Hunter uses it I would start there. You now have ewido which works as a trojan hunter.
There are products such as spysweeper, a2 and Trojan Hunter that use it. So it is likely that Spyware Doctor is using it also.

OK on to Norton. This is the link to make sure Norton AV in unistalled. There is an auto remval tool and a manual removal at the end. Please read through the entire document before you begin.
Afterwards you can use this link to remove Live Update. Again, Please read through the entire document before you begin.

Below you will find ways to help improve system security and some different tools.

And that's all. But to help protect you against further infections, and also to help prevent criminals using your computer to infect other people's computers on the web, I recommend the following: (You may already have some of the items)

[*]Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  2. Click once on the Security tab
  3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
    1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
[*]Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus

I would recommend Grisofts© AVG or AVAST©. As these are the more secure and since they will block both in and out traffic.

[*]Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

[*]Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls

I would recommend ZoneAlarm© as a firewall as it's easy to use. But for a more secure firewall, Sunbelts Kerio© is the one.

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Set up system to ensure a regular update of the Operating System.

Automatically:
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click on Automatic Updates
  4. Check the option of choice (I use Automatic (Recommended)). If you use dial-up I would recommend using the
Notify Me option so that you can download when you can afford the time and bandwidth overheads.
  5. Select the Day/Time of choice
  6. Click Apply
  7. Click OK

Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly

[*]Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

[*]Install Lavasofts© Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

[*]Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here: Click here for more info -->Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

[*]Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
[/list]Follow this list and you are less susceptible to attacks.

I'll start with Spyware DoctorI only downloaded Trojan Hunter and ewido because of the problem, so those can be ruled out.

I have Avast and ZoneAlarm Pro installed as antivirus and firewall, both on auto update, together with SpywareBlaster, SpyBot S and D as well as MSAS. All are updated and run daily. With all these, I was very puzzled how a Trojan got in! I use Firfox for browsing, except when I have to use IE for MS updates, and Thunderbird for email, both again on autoupdate. I'll check IE is set up as you suggest. (I had to make some changes from my usual settings to get a popup showing for a download to work, ewido I think.)

I'll follow up the link to Norton.

Once again, many thanks for all your help.

Best regards,

Sorry to piggyback in your thread but I have found (with your help) that Trojan Hunter can cause a False Positive with MSAS.

I too had installed it in recent weeks as a response to a different Trojan problem.

On my 2nd PC have just removed Hunter and the Rivarts result has gone with it.

Nice to hear your problem's solved and no need to worry about piggybacking. I installed Trojan Hunter after the false alert, so I'm now going to see what really is the problem. I'll keep you informed through this thread.
