My problem is I am unable to access Microsoft, Whatis, Mcafee or Google since a recent crash.
I have run all my Malaware and Spyware protection. Microsoft, Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy & Ewido.
All reported minor problems and claimed to have isolated or removed them.

Your help would be very much appreciated. Various people have suggested that you are the best people to resolve the issue.
Thank you
David

Hello Big Dave 2004,

Welcome to the MWR forums. 8)

While researching a your log file I think I ran across your post on the site which referred you to us. Let's clear up the few things in your HijackThis log that need taking care of. Then, if we need to, we can start digging deeper until we resolve your problem. So let's get started.

There are several "missing file" entries in your HJT log that are related to Copernic Agent. This sometimes happens when there is an incomplete uninstall. In this case, I'm wondering if it did not reinstall properly after the crash. You might try reinstalling it before you do the fixes outlined below. If you do so, run a new scan with HijackThis and look for all of those "file missing" entries. If they show up WITHOUT the "file missing" after them, DO NOT fix them with HJT.

Also, try disabling McAfee firewall and see if that makes a difference. They are notorious for not playing well with other programs.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click Tools=>Settings.
  • In the left pane Click Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options Uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection
  • Uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • Click Save button.
  • Close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right Click the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar.
  • Select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

--->Important Step<---Before we get started, lHijackThis needs to be moved to its own, permanent folder.

HijackThis will create a backup file to use if a restore is necessary, so please DO NOT run HijackThis from a temporary location or your desktop.

Create a folder on the root drive, (Usually C:\), called C:\HJT.
1. Go to "My Computer", (Windows key+e), or by double-clicking on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.
2. Double click on "C:"
3. Right click and select New->Folder. Name it HJT. Move HijackThis to this new folder.

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Hello David,

No problem with the delay. One of the always helpful people here alerted me to your ISP problem.

It does not appear that your difficulties are caused by any kind of malware. I'm going to have you do a couple of things, just to confirm, then we can head off in a different direction.

Please download SilentRunners from here:

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Next, since you already have ewido installed, please update, configured as follows, then run.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.
  • Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
    • Click OK
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. NOTE: We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, AOL, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged. In particular, watch for alerts that have the word "Heuristic" in them - if you recognize the file name as "friendly," these may actually be false positives) select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections." If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

    Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit ewido
Reboot back Normal Mode and run Panda ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
NOTE: Complete the following step ONLY if you no longer use AOL Spyware Protection.
Next, go to Start=>Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
  • Scroll down and find the service called Service: AOL Spyware Protection Service (AOLService)
  • Right-click=> Stop.
  • Right click=>Properties area
  • Under the General Tab, in the "Startup Type" drop-down box:
  • Select Disabled.
  • Hit Apply=>Ok and close any open windows.
Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

...(Verify that these ip addresses are for your isp's DNS Servers, if so, don't 'fix' these.)<--NOTE: If this is not your router address, fix this one please.

O23 - Service: AOL Spyware Protection Service (AOLService) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\AOLSPY~1\\aolserv.exe (file missing) <--NOTE: See notation above the regarding this service.

With all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

In your next reply, please include:
1. The Silent Runners log.
2. The report from the ewido scan.
3. The results from the Panda Active Scan.
4. A fresh HijackThis log. :wave:

Hello David,

When you tried to run Panda Active Scan, which browser were you using? It will not work with Firefox because Firefox does not support ActiveX. Should be run using Internet Explorer. It looks as if the results from at least a partial scan got included in your Silent Runners log. We will deal with those results in just a moment.

Were you able to run the ewido scan? If so, may I have the results in your next reply?

OK, let's take care of what was found in at least a partial Panda Active Scan.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Alternate smitRem.exe download site.

Please download ATFCleaner by Atribune©

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox and/or Opera browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit von the Main menu to close the program.

Note: For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If you don't already have Aware SE 1.06 (I believe that you already do), please download and set up according to the Ad-Aware SE Setup instructions.. If you have Aware SE 1.06, please check for and install any updates.
Don't run it yet!

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display => Desktop => Customize Desktop => Web => Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Finally, please run the Panda Active Scan as directed previously.

A your next reply, please include:
1. The smitfiles.txt log.
2. The report from ewido.
3. The results from the Panda Active Scan.
4. A fresh HijackThis log. :wave:

Hi,

I have followed your instructions and enclose a copy of all the reports you asked for. I hope this will help.

Once again when I started the computer this morning I could not get onto the internet at all. I had to run another Re-store to get my connection working again. Is this part of the problems caused by the possible virus??

Than you once again

Hello David,

I'm kind of curious as to why the date on your latest HJT log doesn't match the current date? Have you intentionally reset the clock?

Let's see if we can't get you back up and running. Your smitRem © log shows that it cleared up some things and we will take care of what the Panda Active Scan found momentarily.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

With all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

From "Safe Mode", (Reboot if necessary.) locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you're able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

To show hidden files :

1. Click Start=>Control Panel=>Folder Options=>View tab.
2. Select "Show hidden files and folders"
3. Clear the check mark in "Hide protected operating system files"=>Yes to confirm.
4. Click Apply=>OK.
5. Close Control Panel.

files...

C:\WINDOWS\switchagreement.txt

Note that some of these file(s) may not be present.

Post back a new log, and let me know how things are going. :wave:

Hello Spot Check Billy.

I must apologise fror posting the wrong log of Highjack this. Sorry.

I have put HJT to run directly from C.

I ran HJT and followed your instructions. Below are the results. I clicked on the suggested items and "Fixed" them.

I opened Control Panel, followed your instructions and deleted (C:\Windows\Switchagreement.txt.

The computer already seems to be far more stable and i have not needed to Re-store today.

It also appears to Boot more quickly.

Thank you for your continuing advice.

David

Hello David,

No problem with posting the wrong log. It happens to the best of us. 8) Glad to hear that things are running better. Your log is looking good with only a couple of things to take care of.

I notice that you do not seem to be running antivirus software. AV software is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL in today's digital world. AVG makes an excellent FREE antivirus client, as do AntiVir and avast!. There are also many "pay-for" programs such as Norton, McAfee and NOD32.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click Tools=>Settings.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

The following entries are OPTIONAL fixes. They are either known resource hogs or can be launched manually when needed. Disabling them may improve system performance. NOTE: Disabling these will NOT delete the program. They just will not launch at Windows startup.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SecureClean4RegManager] "C:\Program Files\WhiteCanyon\SecureClean 4\scregmanager4.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SecureClean4Tray] "C:\Program Files\WhiteCanyon\SecureClean 4\sctray4.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Startup: Cleanup.lnk = D:\onictask.exe

With all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Post back a new log and let me know how things are going. :wave:

...(Verify that these ip addresses are for your isp's DNS Servers, if so, don't 'fix' these.)<--NOTE: If this is not your router address, fix this one please.

That was what SpotCheckBilly (SCB) told you.

The IP 10.x.x.x is not on the internet, but is a computer on the LAN side of the router, or is the router itself.

It cannot be malware.

Please wait for any extra advise from SCB.

Hello David,

The $64,000 question is, are you still unable to access the sites that started this whole process? My mistake, I should have asked you that sooner.

If you're still having problems, let's try having the sites reset their cookies:
  • Click Start=>Control Panel=>Internet options.
  • Under the Generaltab.
  • Click Delete Files button.
  • Place a check-mark in Delete all off-line content.
  • Click OK
  • Click Delete Cookies
  • Click OK=>OK
  • Exit Control Panel
  • Repeat for all users.
In Firefox:
  • Click Tools=>Options=>Privacy icon.
  • Click Cache tab.
  • Click Clear Cache button.
  • Click Cookies tab.
  • Click Clear Cookies Now button.
  • Click OK
  • Repeat for all users.
The good news is:

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

Below is my standard "Final Cleanup" and "All Clean" speech. Included in it are tips on how to keep your computer from being reinfected. They are simple to set up and simple to maintain, and I HIGHLY recommend that you follow them. (I use every one.)

Download, install and run Cleanup! from Steven Gould, then:

1. Click "Cleanup!"

(wait for the program to finish scanning your system, and selecting files to be removed.)

2. Exit the program and reboot the computer, if necessary.

For more information about using Cleanup! see here.

If everything is running ok, let's do the final cleanup...

1. Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

2. If you've downloaded MicroWorld AV (MWAV), run it again - but don't scan, just click "Clear Log" and exit the program.

Please skip this step 3. Go to >www.trendmicro.com and click "Free Online Scan", then "Scan now, it's free!". Follow on-screen prompts.

4. Disable, then reenable System Restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system restore point manually.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster => SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard => SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware => If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware => If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad => IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file => The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar => Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Use a Firewall => I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. For an excellent article on Firewalls, why you should use one and a some of those available, see Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls. I recommend ZoneAlarm or Sunbelts Kerio. ZoneAlarm is more user-friendly, but Sunbelts Kerio is considered more secure.
  • UPDATE!-UPDATE!-UPDATE! => This is, without a doubt, THE MOST IMPORTANT element in keeping your computer free of malware. Keep each and every one of your anti-malware tools AND Windows up-to-date with all current definitions and patches.
I also suggest that you delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself), for example:
  • C:\WINDOWS\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • C:\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • Repeat for all users.
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files and cookies:
  • Click Start=>Control Panel=>Internet options.
  • Under the Generaltab.
  • Click Delete Files button.
  • Place a check-mark in Delete all off-line content.
  • Click OK
  • Click Delete Cookies
  • Click OK=>OK
  • Exit Control Panel
  • Repeat for all users.
In Firefox:
  • Click Tools=>Options=>Privacy icon.
  • Click Cache tab.
  • Click Clear Cache button.
  • Click Cookies tab.
  • Click Clear Cookies Now button.
  • Click OK
  • Repeat for all users.
Empty the recycle bin:
  • Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop.
  • Select "Empty Recycle Bin".
  • Repeat forall users.
Note: You can also do the above steps using a program such as Cleanup! from Steven Gould, ATFCleaner by Atribune©, or CCleaner.
PLEASE NOTE: The above steps should be done on a regular basis.

Also, please see: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Let me know if you're still having problems, and we can do some more digging. :wave:

Hi Spot check Billy,

Thank you for your latest suggestions.
I am sorry to say the answer to the $64,000 questions is "No" I still cannot access Microsoft, Mcafee,
Whatis etc. I have found out now that I cannot access Ebay, Wanadoo and a few other sites that I use fairly often.

Your first two suggestions are things I do regularly (cleaning up Internet Explorer and Firefox) but I have done it
again anyway. I have also run MS Cleanup and did a Defrag.
I downloaded Steven Goulds Cleanup and ran it.and as suggested.

I downloaded MVAV and did not scan.

I tried to download a couple of your suggestions but could not get onto the websites or I could not download from them.
I tried on I.E. and firefox.

I then went to Start> Help and Support.(To turn off Systyem Restore) A sign came saying that
Help & Support was not available. I.E has also disappeared from both Desktop and All programmmes.
Any ideas how to restore them. I thought of going to "System restore" through "find and I could run it but
prefer to see what you say.

Thank you for your continuing help.
