Unread postby Shyfty » March 15th, 2006, 3:47 am

Hi!

I am coming to you folks after spending countless hours running online free virus scans and all the usual repertoire of spyware/ adware/ malware scanners. I still have this virus.

Symptoms:

Cant access My Computer "manage"
Cant use the Run window under the start button (cmd and msconfig do not work)
Randon pop ups- poker stars, registry cleaner etc.
"Control Alt Delete" doesn't work
Shuts down or interferrs with virus scans.

Please read my log here and help me out...

Hello Shyfty,

Welcome to the MWR forums.

Since there isn't anything that jumps out of your HijackThis log, we need to do a couple of things to help us pinpoint the problem.

First off, is this a work computer? The presence of this line in your HijackThis log:
O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1
Shows that the registry editor is locked. This would be done, either by you, or a system administrator. If neither of these cases apply, we will fix this entry at the appropriate time.

We need some more detailed information, so please complete the following:

Do you know anything about, or did you install C:\Program Files\Update05\Setup.exe?
If not, I would like you to do the following:
  • Go to Jotti Virus Scan
  • Click Browse...
  • Navigate to: C:\Program Files\Update05\Setup.exe
  • Click Submit
  • Copy/Paste results into your next reply.
I see that you already have Spysweeper. Please update it, then make sure it is configured as follows and run.

Reboot into Safe Mode,
  • Restart your computer
  • Contiunally tap F8 until a DOS menu appears.
  • Use your up/down arrow key to highlight Safe Mode
  • Hit enter
Open SpySweeper.

Click "Options" (Left side of main window)"=>Sweep Options" tab:

Under "Where to sweep" heading, select:
  • Sweep All Folders on Selected Drives
Under "What to Sweep" heading, select:
  • Sweep Memory
  • Sweep Registry
  • Sweep Cookies
  • Sweep All Users)
  • Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
  • Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
  • Sweep for Rootkits
  • UncheckDo Not Sweep System Restore Folders (ME and XP only
Click Sweep Now (on the left side.)
  • Click Start
  • When scan is complete:
  • Click Next.
  • Make sure everything is checkmarked.
  • Click Next..
  • All items found will be removed.
  • Click Session Log (in the upper right corner)
  • Hit Ctrl+a to select all.
  • Hit Ctrl+c to copy
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Hit Ctrl+v to paste the contents of the session log into your next reply.
Next, please download the NEW free version of Ewido Trojan Scanner
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck
    • "Install background guard"
    • "Install scan via context menu."
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big "E" icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the "OK" button
  • The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
    • Click on Start
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. After the updates are installed, exit ewido.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.
  • Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
    • Click OK
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. NOTE: We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, AOL, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged. In particular, watch for alerts that have the word "Heuristic" in them - if you recognize the file name as "friendly," these may actually be false positives) select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections." If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit ewido

In your next reply, please include:
1. The results from Jotti.
2. The results from Spysweeper.
3. The report from the ewido scan.
4. A fresh HijackThis log.

Ok here we go:

No this is not my work computer... home use only. Not sure why the regedit is turned off, unless this virus did it. Seems like my security settings have been altered.

Don't know anything about the Update 05 file...neither did jotti...found nothing on all counts.

Image

Spysweeper was installed with Hitman Pro... Tried d/l it but was ready to pay for it. Pulled up a bunch of cookies that I had found previously and deleted...they were back. Same cookies showed up on the ewido scan.

I followed your instructions for using the ewido scanner in safe mode...only found two pieces of spyware...nothing else. Not sure where that log went, but here is the one from the online scan. Error came up before I was able to disinfect...

Hello Shyfty,

Sorry for the delay. I wasn't able to get back to you yesterday. I'm checking your logs right now and should be back with my recommendations very shortly.

Hello Shyfty,

OK, let's get rid of those cookies first.

Please download ATFCleaner by Atribune©

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox and/or Opera browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit von the Main menu to close the program.

Note: For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

NOTE: The files that exist in System Mechanic are basically backup files that exist in case you need to undo something that was done using the program. They can be safely deleted as follows:

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to:
C:\Program Files\iolo\System Mechanic Professional 6\Undo\Manual\
Click "Edit"=> "Select All"
Click "File"=> "Delete"
Exit Windows Explorer

--->Important Step<---Before we get started, lHijackThis needs to be moved to its own, permanent folder.

HijackThis will create a backup file to use if a restore is necessary, so please DO NOT run HijackThis from a temporary location or your desktop.

Create a folder on the root drive, (Usually C:\), called C:\HJT.
1. Go to "My Computer", (Windows key+e), or by double-clicking on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.
2. Double click on "C:"
3. Right click and select New->Folder. Name it HJT. Move HijackThis to this new folder.

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

Next, run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"
4. Hold down the CTRL key,
5. Cclick (highlight) each of the following (if present):

C:\Program Files\Update05\Setup.exe

6. Make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted.
7. Click "Kill process".
8. Click "Refresh",
9. Check again. Repeat this step if any remain.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Setup] C:\Program Files\Update05\Setup.exe

O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1

With all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

From "Safe Mode", (Reboot if necessary.) locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you're able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

To show hidden files :

1. Click Start=>Control Panel=>Folder Options=>View tab.
2. Select "Show hidden files and folders"
3. Clear the check mark in "Hide protected operating system files"=>Yes[/color] to confirm.
4. Click Apply=>OK.
5. Close Control Panel.

folders...

C:\Program Files\Update05

Note that some of these file(s) may not be present.

Post back a new log, and let me know how things are going.

Hello Shyfty,

The file you highlighted is legit, so no problem there. Try googling "mdm.exe". You'll find lots of information about it. There are a couple of things that we need to take care of in your log file. Please do the following:

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

MediaGateway
180 Solutions

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"
4. Hold down the CTRL key,
5. Cclick (highlight) each of the following (if present):

C:\Program Files\MediaGateway\MediaGateway.exe

6. Make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted.
7. Click "Kill process".
8. Click "Refresh",
9. Check again. Repeat this step if any remain.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MediaGateway] C:\Program Files\MediaGateway\MediaGateway.exe

With all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

From "Safe Mode", (Reboot if necessary.) locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you're able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

To show hidden files :

1. Click Start=>Control Panel=>Folder Options=>View tab.
2. Select "Show hidden files and folders"
3. Clear the check mark in "Hide protected operating system files"=>Yes[/color] to confirm.
4. Click Apply=>OK.
5. Close Control Panel.

folders...

C:\Program Files\MediaGateway

Note that some of these file(s) may not be present.

Post back a new log and let me know how things are going.

If you are interested in learning how to fight malware, click the MWR University link at the top of the page and follow the directions to apply. We can always use more help.

I wondered about that one... thanks. See anything else? I want to optimize my system as best as I can.

Hello Shyfty,

The following represent OPTIONAL fixes that you can do. They are either resource hogs or can be launched manually when needed. Read the description next to each, then decide for yourself whether or not you want to stop this program from launching at start up.

Launch HijackThis.
Click Scan.
Checkmark the following items:

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe<--NOTE: Adjusts monitor colours across all programs, including Photoshop. It is needed by some graphics professionals who want their monitor calibrated. Most home users will not need it. In my case I can verify this as Photoshop loads fine (Taken from windowsstartup.com Startup List.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install<--NOTE: Associated with the newer versions of nVidia graphics cards drivers. Allows you to immensely improve desktop layouts by setting preferences and optimizations. However, this isn't necessary for the operation of your system

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Creative Detector] "C:\Program Files\Creative\MediaSource\Detector\CTDetect.exe" /R<--NOTE: Auto-detect and play a DVD when using a Creative Soundblaster Audigy2 soundcard. Uses about 2.2 MB of memory. Disable it by heading to the MediaSource DVD Audio Player, selecting Tools, then uncheck the Auto Start box. It should not start up automatically again

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Creative MediaSource Go] "C:\Program Files\Creative\MediaSource\Go\CTCMSGo.exe" /SCB<--NOTE: can be launched manually via Start=>Programs.

With ALL other windows closed, click "Fix Checked".

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

Below is my standard "Final Cleanup" and "All Clean" speech. Included in it are tips on how to keep your computer from being reinfected. They are simple to set up and simple to maintain, and I HIGHLY recommend that you follow them. (I use every one.)

Download, install and run Cleanup! from [i]Steven Gould
, then:

1. Click "Cleanup!"

(wait for the program to finish scanning your system, and selecting files to be removed.)

2. Exit the program and reboot the computer, if necessary.

For more information about using Cleanup! see here.

If everything is running ok, let's do the final cleanup...

1. Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

2. If you've downloaded MicroWorld AV (MWAV), run it again - but don't scan, just click "Clear Log" and exit the program.

Please skip this step 3. Go to www.trendmicro.com and click "Free Online Scan", then "Scan now, it's free!". Follow on-screen prompts.

4. Disable, then reenable System Restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system restore point manually.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster => SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard => SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware => If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware => If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad => IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file => The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar => Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Use a Firewall => I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. For an excellent article on Firewalls, why you should use one and a some of those available, see Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls. I recommend ZoneAlarm or Sunbelts Kerio. ZoneAlarm is more user-friendly, but Sunbelts Kerio is considered more secure.
  • UPDATE!-UPDATE!-UPDATE!> => This is, without a doubt, THE MOST IMPORTANT element in keeping your computer free of malware. Keep each and every one of your anti-malware tools AND Windows up-to-date with all current definitions and patches.
I also suggest that you delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself), for example:
  • C:\WINDOWS\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • C:\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • Repeat for all users.
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files:
  • Click Start=>Control Panel=>Internet options.
  • Under the Generaltab.
  • Click Delete Files button.
  • Place a check-mark in Delete all off-line content.
  • Click OK=>OK
  • Exit Control Panel
  • Repeat for all users.
Empty the recycle bin:
  • Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop.
  • Select "Empty Recycle Bin".
  • Repeat forall users.
Note: You can also do the above steps using a program such as Cleanup! from Steven Gould or CCleaner.

The above steps should be done on a regular basis.

Also, please see: So how did I get infected in the first place?

if you have any other problems or questions, please don't hesitate to post back. Include a fresh HijackThis log.
