Spybot Problems

Unread postby dunwalkin » March 10th, 2006, 12:37 pm

Hi,

I don't know if I'm infected or not. I've ran SpyBot a few times and got similar problems being detected (see below). I usually get SpyBot to fix the selected problems and if running it again immediatley after a fix, I get an all clear. However, when running SpyBot a week or so later, the same type of problem is detected.
Is it a Malware problem and does anyone have any idea what could be causing this.

Regards,
D

Hi dunwalkin,

Welcome to MWR. :)

Please Click on HERE to download a self extractable version of hijackthis. Double click on hijackthis.exe to extract hijackthis to folder c:\hijackthis. It will extract it to that folder and open the folder for you. It will also create a shortcut on your desktop to hijackthis.

Scan with HijackThis. Save the log and post it here in your reply in this thread.

Hi Amateur,
I've ran spybot again and got slightly different probs showing up.

Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify!=dword:0

Windows Security Center.FirewallDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify!=dword:0

I've ran HJT and the log is attached below.
I don't know if the problems detected by SPYBOT are actually caused by Malware or not - the computer "seems" to be working fine.

D

Hi dunwaalkin :) ,

Your log is clean.

This entry only wants to bring to your attention that "someone" has disabled one or more notifications in the Windows security centre. Because you run Norton Security, you may have shut down the firewall for Windows and the Security Center for Windows, or Norton may have done it. As long as you know your security is up-to-date, I believe that this is not a cause for concern.
If changes of the settings are done by yourself/Norton, you can safely tell Spybot to exclude those detections from further scans. In order to do this please right click on each in turn, then click "exclude this detection from future scans". That way, should any other part of security center settings change Spybot will still detect those. Here is a reading about it. It confirms that they are false positives.

Is Spybot v1.4 fully up-to-date? I would also like to point out that you need to update Spybot before you run it, and use the immunize function after every update.

I hope this was helpful.

Thanks Amateur,

I'll investigate the Windows Security/Norton settings and exclude the spybot detections.
Spybot is updated regularly and immunised.

Thanks for your time.
