I've Been Bitten - YeeOwww! Please Help Me Remove Malware

Unread postby Psyclist » February 19th, 2011, 6:13 pm

A few days back I started to note some strange behavior on my computer. I started to get redirected on google searches to strange sites. I tried SpyBot and cleared out some things (a lot, actually). I then switched antivirus protection programs to Norton and did a full scan and that also appeared to clear out a lot of problems. But my redirect problem continues. In addition to redirect, sometimes a new browser will pop up out of nowhere and navigate to one of these strange sites. This seems to happen mostly when I open a new browser or a new tab in a browser (but not all the time).

Norton is constantly blocking "attacks" now, so that appears to be working okay but there is still something on the system that either Norton or Spybot cannot detect or fix. The Norton warning notifications appear to be something to do with svchost.exe or iexplore.exe.

I appreciate any help given - thanks!

Re: I've Been Bitten - YeeOwww! Please Help Me Remove Malwa

Unread postby jmw3 » February 23rd, 2011, 8:29 am

Hello & Welcome to Malware Removal

Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this ensure Notify me when a reply is posted is ticked on the POST A REPLY page.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • It will require more than one round to properly clean your system. Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! even if symptoms seemingly abate.
Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.
If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave & if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have abandoned your topic.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Thanks

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer 1.5 & 1.6
  • If you have version 1.5, right click the Spybot Icon in the system tray near the clock (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy
  • Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools
  • Check this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident
  • You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident
  • Uncheck this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • Exit Spybot Search & Destroy
  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect
Leave TeaTimer disabled until we're done here.

DDS
Download DDS.scr by sUBs from one of the following links & save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2
  • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal
  • Shortly after two logs will appear, DDS.txt & Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply. Please DO NOT attach the logs
Rootkit Unhooker
Download Rootkit Unhooker from Here & save it on your desktop.
  • Disable your security programs
  • Double click RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers and Stealth Code, uncheck the rest, then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked then click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished then go File > Save Report
  • Save the report somewhere you can find it such as your desktop then click Close
  • Copy/paste the entire contents of the report & post it in your next reply
Note - You may get the following warning - it is ok - just ignore it:
"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Re: I've Been Bitten - YeeOwww! Please Help Me Remove Malwa

Hi

A fair bit to do here.

A couple of questions before we begin as you have a possible MBR (Master Boot Record) infection.
Did you install Windows yourself & if so do you have a Windows XP Professional installation disk? Or did Windows come pre-installed on the machine? If so you would have been prompted to make a set of Recovery Disks. Do you have those?
Due to the nature of the main infection, if Windows was pre-installed you may no longer have access to the Recovery Partition.

Remove Programs
The following outdated programs are open to numerous exploits & vulnerabilities & should be removed. We'll update them in due course.
Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Remove these programs by clicking Remove

Adobe Reader 8.1.4

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Mozilla Firefox (2.0)

If some programs listed are not present, please do not panic

TFC (Temp File Cleaner)
Download TFC (Temp File Cleaner) by Old Timer Here & save it to your desktop.
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC Cleaner will close all open application windows
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program
  • Click Start... your desktop will temporarily disappear
  • If prompted, click Yes to reboot
Note: Save your work.. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take any longer than a couple of minutes & may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Let me know about your Windows installation before we go any further.

OK, thanks so much. I have completed your instructions. Windows was pre-loaded on the PC and I did make a recovery disk.

OK, good

At this point I would like reiterate to back up any personal data you may have.

Back Up MBR
Let's back up your MBR (Master Boot Record) as a reserve in case we need it:
  • First create a new folder on your Desktop and name it MBR (must be this name and must be on your Desktop)
  • Please download mbr.exe and save it to the new MBR folder. (must be in this location)
  • Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
  • This will open an empty Notepad file.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into Notepad.
Code: Select all
@ECHO OFF
CD "%userprofile%\Desktop\MBR"
MBR -c 0 1 "%userprofile%\Desktop\MBR\backup_mbr.dat"
DEL %0

  • Click Format and ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Save as mbrcopy.bat to your Desktop.
  • Save as file type All Files or it won't work.
  • Now double click on mbrcopy.bat to run it.
  • A file backup_mbr will be created in the MBR folder on your Desktop, as well as a file mbr.log
  • Please post me the contents of mbr.log

TDSSKiller
Download TDSSKiller.zip & save it on your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your Desktop
  • Double-click the TDSSKiller Folder on your desktop
  • Important!: Run this fix once and once only
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe then click Start scan
  • A box will appear saying System scan completed
  • If any Malicious objects are found, click the default action Cure > Continue > Reboot now
  • If any suspicious objects are detected the default action will be Skip, ensure Skip is selected then click Continue
  • A log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0 17.08.2010
  • To find the log click Start > Computer > C:
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply

To post in next reply:
Contents of mbr.log
Contents of TDDSKiller log
Update on how the computer is running

Thanks so much jmw3. The update on my machine is that it does appear to be running fine now. I have done a handful of Google searches and the links go where they are supposed to go. I also have not had any rogue instances of the browser open spontaneously to weird websites either.

My mbr log is here:
Stealth MBR rootkit/Mebroot/Sinowal/TDL4 detector 0.4.2 by Gmer, http://www.gmer.net
Windows 5.1.2600 Disk: FUJITSU_MHU2100AT rev.00000008 -> Harddisk0\DR0 -> \Device\00000095

0x1 sector(s) have been successfully saved to "C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Desktop\MBR\backup_mbr.dat".

MyTDSSKiller log is here:

Looking good. Still some work to do though.

ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations (DO NOT download ComboFix from anywhere else but one of the provided links):
Link 1
Link 2

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
A guide to do this can be found here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Image
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

OK, it sounds like this next step might be something that could potentially cause problems with my computer. I take it that is why you wanted me to verify that I had a recovery disk (which I do).

I'm on a business trip until Monday night (2/28/2011). I'm wondering if it would be a better idea for me to wait until then to proceed with this next step since I don't have my recovery disk with me and I really don't want the laptop to be down during my business trip.

What do you think?

Hi

The main reason I asked if you had a Recovery Disc was for the MBR infection that was on board. The infection present was called TDL4. What it does is hijack the Master Boot Record (MBR) so that it loads before Windows.
If you had installed Windows yourself, & had a set of Genuine Windows Installation disks from Microsoft, then your MBR can generally be safely reset to "default" settings without the expectation of any problems afterwards.
However if Windows was pre-installed on your computer, as you have stated it was then it means you have an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) computer and it will therefore NOT have default MBR coding. OEM computers often have Recovery Partitions installed on the hard drives, & re-writing an infected MBR will make this partition unavailable, & in some cases make the computer unbootable.
The TDSSKiller has removed the infection however the infection has more than likely re-written the MBR, thus leaving you without the option to use your Recovery Partition if needed. However having the Recovery Disc means you can use that option instead of the Recovery Partition if ever required.

The Recovery Console mentioned that ComboFix uses if required is something completely different than your Recovery Disc. In fact if you have an OEM machine , then it may already be installed.

If you wish to wait to get back from your business trip to continue, that's fine :) .... Just let me know what you would like to do.
