Personally I don't bother with the on-board utility any more, I just use the online scan ..... http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/

I agree. I've used both, and I definitely prefer the online scanner.

Latest release: 5th Jan, 2011
PSI 2.0 (Build 2001)
We have released a new build of the PSI 2.0 (Build 2001), and have deployed several bugfixes and improvents.

Amongst these, the most important are:

* The PSI 2.0 no longer relies on the Workstation service!
* The PSI 2.0 will now run all scans in the background, so if you close the User Interface while a scan is running, it will finish in the tray instead of aborting
* Fixed the reported high CPU/Memory consumption issue.
* And other minor bugfixes

So this should no longer be an issue!
