Malware: "Oops" failed to set data for rap

Unread postby eblouissante » December 12th, 2010, 8:56 am

Description of Problem

My computer was infected by the HDD Diagnostics Virus a few days ago. I think I managed to remove that following some instructions I found online - I no longer receive alerts from the virus that my Hard Drive cannot be found and that my personal data is at risk. It also no longer creates shortcuts that appear on my desktop.

After this experience, I backed up my data on a removable hard drive.

However, since removing that virus, my computer continues to experience unexpected shut-downs, which lead to a blue screen, and then the computer restarting. When the computer has restarted, a window pops up titled 'Oops', with the message 'Failed to set data for rap." There is an "Okay" button under that window.

I would like to know how to remove the virus, to stop these unexpected shutdowns. I am also concerned that the virus might have gotten transferred to my removable hard drive when I backed up the data, such that the next time I back up my computer, the hard-drive might reinfect my computer?

I would be very grateful. Thank you very much!

Re: Malware: "Oops" failed to set data for rap

Hi eblouissante,

Welcome to the forum.

My nickname is deltalima and I will be helping you with your malware issue.

The logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please Note:
The programs I ask you to run need to be run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the program file and selecting: Run as Administrator.
Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program.
When prompted, please select: Allow. Reference: User Account Control (UAC) and Running as Administrator

Please let me know what Cisco Systems VPN Client software is used for.

Thank you very much deltalima.

Cisco Systems VPN Client is a software I downloaded to log into my university's wireless network. I think it is quite safe - it's distributed on the university website and downloaded as per the university IT support's instructions in order to use their wireless.

Thanks again for your help!

Connected to Educational Network
I see you are posting for help for a computer connected to an "Educational" Network.

May I draw your attention to THIS topic, which you should have read before posting for help.

The section ... Computers connected to any kind of educational network ... explains why we do not offer help for such computers.

This topic is now closed
