Internet choked, Chrome is unusable

Unread postby coolspot » September 28th, 2010, 12:49 pm

Hi All,

I have a problem recently with my computer. The internet suddenly became very slow. Since it is the only computer (out of 6) that has this problem, I concluded that it is not the ISP nor the router problem. LAN works fine, since I can access my NAS with normal speed, but when it comes to browsing, it is extremely slow (unusual). MSN, Trillian, Skype still work.
I also found that google chrome, is unoperable. When i try to access website using chrome, it just show a blank page.

I ran a scan using GMER, SuperAntiSpyware, AVG, and AdAware, but found nothing.

Here is my HijackThis log. Hope someone can help.

Thanks!

Hi coolspot,
Looks to me like StarCraft has set your machine so the internet traffic goes thru their server.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = proxy.starhub.net.sg:8080

I don't know how this plays with Punkbuster (an app which historically has seemed to be quite buggy).
There will not be adequate documentation to figure out everything these programs are doing, since most of their activity is DESIGNED to be sneaky so they can prevent illegal copying, etc.

You also have rather a lot of "helpers" and "updaters" running at startup.
We can keep them from autostarting to see if it helps the situation.

In addition, AVG has the "linkscanner" toolbar, (actually the ask.com toolbar) which has a shady past of its own.

There is no firm indication that malware is involved here, although it could be.
How would you like me to help?
Let me have your comments.

For your info, Our usual notice for a PunkBuster machine is this:
-----------------------------------------------------------
There are some Issues with infections in relation to PunkBuster:
Your computer has installed gaming tools. Some of these, like Punkbuster, use spyware techniques to engage in the anti-piracy battle.
In the process, they take control of much of your PC, and they actually meet the definition of spyware/malware.
They are sometimes designed to prevent orderly removal or modification, and they have only limited respect for retaining the overall security and integrity of your machine.
It is not a certainty that your computer can be cleaned without breaking or removing some of these programs, and this could result in not being able to play the associated games, or corruption of your system.
Since we are dedicated to causing No Harm, we won't normally work on machines with this type of program installed without explicit permission from the owner.
If you want to continue using the machine in this way, you should consider using imaging software like Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage, or Terabyte Image, which can put your entire C: drive back into an earlier state whenever the infections or malfunctions get too severe.

If you really want to clean this machine, I will help, but if you so choose, understand there is NO assurance you will be able to do games afterwards.

Hi Askey127,

Thanks for replying. Really appreciate it.

1. Regarding the proxy
Starhub is an ISP name and has nothing to do with the Starcraft II. Anyway, I have deleted the proxy setting leave the proxy setting empty. I doubt that it is the proxy problem since Internet Explorer works, albeit slow. I have uninstalled chrome, but when i tried to download new version, the installer give me an error.

2. I cant find anything related to PunkBuster in my computer.

3. Can you advice me which 'helper' and 'updater' to disable?

By the way, I forget to tell you that the machine work perfectly fine in safe mode. I am still suspecting that it might be malware, but as I said, I have ran SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware, AVG, GMER, all in both normal and safe mode, and they found nothing but trace of cookies which I deleted anyway. My other suspicion is OnlineArmor Firewall, which I already delete.

Thanks!

coolspot,
I will help you find the culprit.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\5.2.4204.1700\swg.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATICustomerCare] "C:\Program Files\ATI\ATICustomerCare\ATICustomerCare.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Google Update] "C:\Users\lie\AppData\Local\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe" /c
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Update Service] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\TEKNUM~1\update.exe /startup
O23 - Service: Google Update Service (gupdate) (gupdate) - Google Inc. - C:\Program Files\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe
O23 - Service: PnkBstrA - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\PnkBstrA.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis (right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl +A), copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the log contents into a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.

Thanks for the info on the proxy and Online Armor.
Does your employer (or some other entity with which you need to communicate) use the Yahoo Zimbra Desktop service?

Hi askey,

Here is the updated HJT.

I am using Zimbra for personal use only. I find it okay for Yahoo mail service. It's quite buggy sometimes, so i am using it less now. Is it known to cause any problem?

coolspot,
Do you have regular need for these? They allow remote access to the desktop.
TeamViewer 5
LogMeIn

Please do the following in the order given:
------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

Java(TM) 6 Update 17
Ad-Aware
Pando Media Booster
PunkBuster Services

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, (or right click and choose "Run as administrator") and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
---------------------------------------------
Run CKScanner
Download CKScanner from HERE
Important - Save it to your desktop.
Right-Click CKScanner.exe, choose Run as administrator and click Search For Files.
After a couple minutes or less, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
A message box will verify the file saved.
Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop, give permission if asked, and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
---------------------------------------------
Run an OTL Scan
Please download OTL.exe by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. For Vista or Win7, right click the icon and choose "Run as administrator".
  • Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the Custom Scans/Fixes box.
    Code: Select all

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them as a reply. Use separate replies if more convenient.

So, after the scans, we are looking for the contents of CKFiles.txt, OTL.txt, and Extras.txt
Also tell me about your usage of TeamViewer and LogMeIn.

Due to Lack of Response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
