Multiple Problems with Vista - Suspected Malware

Unread postby radar79 » September 20th, 2010, 9:16 am

Description:
- I'm running Vista, no service packs, and SP1 refuses to install (it freezes). I downloaded the pack to my desktop (all 400+ mb) but no luck installing it.
- Windows update won't work at all (freezes while looking for updates, no error codes at all)
- The keyboard messes up after boot up. Most keys stop working, when pressed they open random windows or menus, I've checked to see if any keys are stuck but it doesn't seem to be the case.
- When in this sick state, some keys when pressed will display the corresponding letter with an accent (e.g. letter 'o').
- I've run several virus checks, in safemode and normal, nothing's been detected (Malewarebytes, Mcafee, Microsoft security essentials, spybot search and destroy, trendmicro housecall)
- In sick state, alt-tab refuses to switch between windows as normal
- internet explorer in quicklaunch launches ie properties. Desktop icons do the same, and the context menu from the right mouse button often refuses to come up, and the keyboard equivalent has to be used.
- often, if I use ctrl+alt+delete to open task manager at the beginning and close some random processes, the system will work properly for that session.
- also, sometimes the system reverts to normal after I run an antivirus (which finds nothing)
- the problem has occurred in both normal and safe mode.

I've tried everything I know, and am totally stumped. Would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks!

hi radar79,
------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:
avast! Free Antivirus
NIS2007
Norton 360
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Spybot - Search & Destroy

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
If the Spybot Uninstaller asks whether you want to remove all files and settings, answer YES. If it reports that it cannot remove all files, that's OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT(RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis (right-click and "Run as administrator")
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl +A), copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the log contents into a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.

We have more work to do, but tell me if it's behaving any better.

Thanks for responding, askey127!

Norton360's not showing up in Control panel, but it's still on the HijackThis uninstall list! I recall uninstalling Norton myself, a few weeks ago. The system's still playing up big time. Examples: the keyboard didn't work after restarting, until I ran HijackThis then it suddenly started working. Neither Windows nor Microsoft security essentials are able to update. Here are the logs:

Re: Multiple Problems with Vista - Suspected Malware

Unread postby askey127 » September 22nd, 2010, 9:13 pm

radar79,
If you cannot download anything, You may need to download Rkill, the Norton tool or Gmer to a flash stick using a clean machine, and copy them to the desktop here.
------------------------------------------------
Download and Run Rkill
Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:
One, Two,Three or Four
  • (Right-click Rkill and "Run as administrator").
  • A command window will open, then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue. If you cannot get one of the downloads to work for you, try one of the other links.
If you cannot get Rkill to run without being stopped, don't proceed further, and post back to tell me about it.
---------------------------------------------
Symantec did not remove everything as it should. This is a common problem.
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says).
On your desktop, click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
------------------------------------------------------------
Please download the GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.
  • Right click the .exe file and chose Run as Administrator. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than the System drive (which is typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      See image below
      Image
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
**Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
Note: Do not run any other programs while Gmer is running.

Askey, we've got a problem! :(

I ran Rkill, which found nothing to report. Then I removed Norton using the norton removal tool. After this, I rebooted and tried to run GMER. It progressed very slowly indeed, and then I got a blue screen error (details at bottom of post). I rebooted again, and this time it ran much faster, right to the end. However, when I clicked "save as" the system hung. I eventually had to cold boot. This time, I booted into safe mode, successfully ran GMER and got the following log:

GMER 1.0.15.15281 - http://www.gmer.net
Rootkit scan 2010-09-23 05:54:11
Windows 6.0.6000
Running: 6hmwuw2b.exe; Driver: C:\Users\Chiso\AppData\Local\Temp\ugloqpoc.sys

---- Devices - GMER 1.0.15 ----

AttachedDevice \Driver\kbdclass \Device\KeyboardClass0 Wdf01000.sys (WDF Dynamic/Microsoft Corporation)
AttachedDevice \Driver\kbdclass \Device\KeyboardClass1 Wdf01000.sys (WDF Dynamic/Microsoft Corporation)

---- EOF - GMER 1.0.15 ----

For the avoidance of doubt, I have only one keyboard. I wasn't sure if this log from safemode would be of any use to you, so I booted into normal mode and tried again. As it did the first time, the scan progressed very slowly and eventually hung processing:

c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe[4036] c:\windows\system32\slc.dll

I left the system for 30 mins to 1 hour on this file before admitting to myself that it had crashed, and I forced a power down.

All original symptoms have persisted. I was only able to get the keyboard working to type this reply after running "HijackThis", just to shake things up! (I just ran the program and closed it; I took no action).

Please heeeelp! :(

Scan With RKUnHooker
Please Download Rootkit Unhooker and Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it. (Right click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. UNcheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. (eg. desktop) then Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

radar79,
Run Microsoft security Essentials, and have it run a fuul scan. Have it remove anything it finds.
---------------------------------------------------
MBR Rootkit Detector
Please download MBR.exe by GMER
Be sure to download it to the root of your drive, e.g. C:\MBR.exe

Once the download has finished, click Start > Run. Copy and paste the contents of the codebox below into the run box (Do Not include Code:), then click OK :
Code: Select all
CMD /C \mbr -t >Log.txt&Log.txt&del Log.txt

A log will be generated, Post the contents in your next reply.

-----------------------------------------
Check HD for Errors
Open Notepad... then copy and paste the following line into Notepad:
(Notepad is in Start, Programs, Accessories)
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

Now Save the NotePad file like this:
  • Click on File from the top menu bar.
  • Select Save As, use Filename: testhd.bat. and Save As Type: All Files.
  • Choose Desktop as the location
  • Click Save.
Right click on testhd.bat on your desktop and select Run As Administrator to run it.
A Command Prompt box will pop up, then close after a couple minutes.
Please post the contents of the checkhd.txt file from your desktop.
If the file is very long, just copy and paste the LAST 20 or 30 lines into your reply.

Askey127,

MS security essentials found nothing.

The commands didn't work using run. I eventually started the command prompt as administrator, and typed in the commands (from after cmd /c). The report from MBR was blank. I got the following from Chkdsk:

-----
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is HDD.

WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
File verification completed.
0 bad file records processed.

0 EA records processed.

44 reparse records processed.

CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
Index verification completed.
5 unindexed files processed.

CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)...
Security descriptor verification completed.
14997 data files processed.

CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal...
Usn Journal verification completed.
The master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribute is incorrect.
The Volume Bitmap is incorrect.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

69755757 KB total disk space.
62167972 KB in 78578 files.
64828 KB in 14998 indexes.
0 KB in bad sectors.
202805 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
7320152 KB available on disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
17438939 total allocation units on disk.
1830038 allocation units available on disk.
----------

I'm about to run with the fix option, though last time I tried, access was denied.

radar,
The warning about the bitmap is a bogus finding from NTFS. There is nothing wrong, and you do not need to run chkdsk again.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
You will need to disable all your antivirus software BEFORE running ComboFix.
.
  • Download ComboFix from here
  • Rename it while saving the download to zzz.exe and save it to your Desktop. Do not try to rename it after it has been saved to your desktop, or the infection may prevent you from using it.
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop, not from any other folder on your computer**
  • DISABLE MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS
Right click the green MS Security Essentials "schoolhouse" icon, and click "Open".
Clcik the "Settings" tab and in the left pane, Click "Real Time Protection"
In The Main Window UNCHECK the box for "Turn on real time protection(Recommended)"
    Then click "Save Changes"
  • Now start ComboFix (zzz.exe). Right click and choose "Run as administrator".
  • OK any disclaimers and start the Scan.
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running.
  • When finished, the report will open. Post the log in your next reply, and then Reenable your protection software
A copy of the log will be located here if you need it-> C:\ComboFix.txt
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

Hi Askey,

We're making progress! While waiting for your response yesterday I did a disk cleanup (got rid of up to 1 GB of system dump files, queued error reports, etc!) and then defragmented the system. It now recognise that there are key windows updates missing, though I left it all night trying to install the updates, with no success.

Combofix ran properly (thanks for the renaming tip!). I tried it a few times over the last week or so but it never seemed to get through the whole routine without some error message at some point. This time, the only error message came at the log creation point, and I suspect it was minor/irrelevant.

One more thing, I've not tried to update windows or MSE after running Combofix, but when I tried to open IE from the quicklaunch icon, it said: "Illegal operation on a registry key that's been marked for deletion". I successfully ran as administrator from the desktop icon instead.

Here's the log:

Update: I spotted a reference to Mcafee firewall in the report, so I ran the mcafee removal tool and it's completed successfully. The system is now working okay at startup, but windows and microsoft security essentials still refuse to update! I distrust the report that says MSE is updated; I saw it try to update several times, and fail. Then after one restart, it proclaimed that it was miraculously updated!! :(

Good work.
From now on, please don't remove anything unless I know about it.
See if you can get this download, save to your desktop, and run it to install IE8. The download will work in Firefox.

Hi Askey,

Sure, I'll restrain my admittedly trigger-happy delete finger!

IE8 won't install, because it requires a minimum of SP1. I'm running Vista with no service packs (long story). It advised me to update windows first, but Windows update has gone back to it's original state - it's been stuck on "checking for updates" for the last 4 hours or so. :(

Any ideas?

My fault on the sequence.
----------------------------------------------
If you still have the SP1 installer, try it. If you don't still have it, Vista SP1 is available from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B0C7136D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674&displaylang=en

----------------------------------------------
Vista SP2 is available from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a4dd31d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3&displaylang=en

Don't try SP2 until SP1 has been installed. Then IE8 and SP2.
Let me know how it goes.

Yup, I do have the installer, but it doesn't work. It opens up and allows me to accept the licence agreement, but does not make any intstallation progress. I've been trying that for over a week :(, sometimes leaving it for several hours. Nothing happens, it just sits there, with an empty progress bar! I tried it again earlier this morning, same result. I also tried in safe mode, but it said it must be run in normal mode.
