Please help with my comps infection....

Unread postby 13thwarrior » September 16th, 2010, 4:24 pm

Hello all,

Soooo, my comp was infected some time last week or so  . I have tried every sort of anti-spyware/malware I could find without any real permanent results (even ran in SAFE MODE). I have tried uninstalling and re-installing software as well. I am using firefox as my browser. Anyways, I keep getting these redirects to fake news sites or fake security scan websites. I am also getting popups and my current Antivirus software (Webroot) is stopping a lot of random crap, but not all of it  .

This is my home computer and I use it to make a lot of home movies for my family and such. Please help if you have time and can. Thank you all in advance for taking some time out of your lives to assist me in this matter  . If it has to be done I can fdisk, just don't want to go through the hassle, as I have a lot of home videos, photos, and music that would need to be backed up.

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:

    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Hi,

Only one of the RSIT logs were posted. You can find info.txt in the C:\RSIT folder. Please post it on your next reply.

I would like you to uninstall Spybot - Search & Destroy until the computer is clean as it can interfere with what we are doing.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

FrostWire

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Take note that remnants of the above program/s and any other P2P program found will be removed when cleaning.

GMER Rootkit Scanner
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please run a new HJT scan when finished and post the log back here.

Please reply with:-
  • RSIT log ( info.txt)
  • GMER Log
  • New HJT log

The site isn't allowing me to post any of the logs... It keeps saying "the web page is unavailable". Also I have been trying to run the GMER thing and after about 10min it shuts my computer down without completing. When my comp re-starts, nothing is saved from the scan. Any ideas?

Sorry about the P2P thing by the way. I have 2 kids who use the computer, and I thought I had erased all remnants of it. Should be good to go now, as I could not find anything when I searched for Frostwire or Utorrent.

I would like you to try GMER in safe mode please, see if you get any results.

It appears you have disabled something/things in MSCONFIG, were they suspicious items? Please re-enable before posting your next HJT log.

Do the re-directs only happen in Firefox, or in IE as well?

Please reply with:-

  • New HJT log
  • GMER Log if successful

So the Safe mode worked and I got the GMER log. As for the question... the popups are happening in firefox and google chrome. I dont like to use IE unless I have to. I actually deleted all shortcuts to IE a while ago. Although, I could see what happens when I do use it if you want though. Anyways, info you requested...

(BTW, did I successfully get rid of the P2P? I tried my damn hardest, but will try again if remnants are still there. I banned my kids from the comp for awhile so not much should change now haha :P)

HJT.....

Re: Please help with my comps infection....

BTW, did I successfully get rid of the P2P? I tried my damn hardest, but will try again if remnants are still there

That’s ok we will clean them as we go :)

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

Please reply with:-

Please give me an update on the computers performance. Eg have the redirects stopped?

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

The TFC run is complete and rebooted.

The PC seems to be acting a lot better. I haven't noticed any popups in the last day or so  Your awesome :D
