Hello and welcome to MWR.

Please read the following information carefully.

IMPORTANT: Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.

To make cleaning this machine easier:

  • Continue to respond to this thread until I I tell you that the logs are clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Your security program(s) may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Note: Please be aware as I am still in training all of my fixes/posts require prior checking by a MRU Teacher. So some delays may be inevitable, please be patient and I will reply again asap.

Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Unread postby vict0r » September 13th, 2010, 7:12 am

Hi

Please do not edit any of the logs I ask for you to post.

Uninstall misc programs

Out of date Adobe and Java installations pose a security risk. They can be used by malware as a means to infect a computer and or re-infect. I will include instructions to reinstall later. You can use the portable version of Foxit Reader (5Mb) as an alternative to Adobe Reader while we fix your computer.

    Adobe Reader 7.0
    Coupon Printer for Windows
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2

  • Click on Start > All programs > Accessories > Run.
  • In the open text box copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click Ok.
  • Uninstall the programs listed above.

Security Application Check

Please download and save SecurityCheck.exe by screen317 to your Desktop from one of the links below.
Link 1 | Link 2

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe to start the program
  • If new window opens asking if you want to run the program, click Run
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt

Thank you for letting me know that you will be away until Friday.

When I tried downloading the RKUnHooker I got an error message from Trend Micro stating that it was an infected file.
This is a so called "false positive", please let Trend Micro allow the download and execution of Rootkit Unhooker.

Then go ahead with the RSIT instructions even if you get further problems running the rootkit scan.

Download/run Rkill:

Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save it to your Desktop:

One, Two,Three, Four or Five

  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • A notepad window will open, please post the contents in your next reply
  • This log can also be found at C:\rkill.log
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.

Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore/allow the download/execution to continue.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

  • Please start Malwarebytes' Anti Malware (MBAM) (already installed).
  • Click the Update tab and then click the Check for Updates button to perform the update.
  • When the update is finished, click the Scanner tab, select Perform Quick Scan and then click the Scan button.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Check all items and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

You should still have this program on your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. (it will be maximized)
  3. Please post the contents of "log.txt" in your next reply.

To post:
  • the MBAM log
  • the RSIT log
  • this log: C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.1.3_30.08.2010_16.07.22_log.txt
  • Did any problems occur while following the instructions?

Continue to reply to this thread until I tell you that the logs are clean! Absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean a clean computer

Re: Malware/virus attack

Hi

MBAM show that the computer was infected with Rootkit.TDSS, also known as Win32/Alureon. A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system. Due to its rootkit functionality, it's impossible to tell what may have been done when the system was compromised.

The following steps should be taken:
  • If you have ever handled anything related to money (online banking, online shopping, etc), call your bank company and say that you might be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts
  • Next, change ALL your passwords from a different computer! Do not use them on this computer again, until we have verified that there are no remaining infections present.

Read this for further information:
What are rootkits from Wikipedia
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it

Post the TDSSKiller log.

Click Start -> Run, then copy and paste the following line into the Run box and click OK:
notepad C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.1.3_30.08.2010_16.07.22_log.txt
Post the content of the log in your next reply.

Disable Trend Micro Anti Virus

Click on the Trend Micro Antivirus icon in the system tray and select Protection Against Viruses & Spyware. When asked for time to automatically reactivate, choose at next boot. The icon will appear with an exclamation point to verify that it's disabled.

GMER

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow .sys driver to load, please consent.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All << (don't miss this one)
See image below, Click the image to enlarge it
    Image

  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

If GMER crashes, then restart your computer and try again, this time also uncheck Devices. You can also try the scan in safe mode if necessary. You might want to save these instructions with notepad or print them because there's no internet in safe mode:

  • Restart your computer
  • During startup, but before the Windows logo appears, tap the F5/F8 key continually or hold down the Shift key;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • When asked to proceed to safe mode, click Yes.
  • Make sure Trend Micro Antivirus is disabled, then follow the GMER instructions.
  • When finished reboot the computer.

When ready, please post:
  • The TDSSKiller log.
  • The GMER log.
