garyinarush,
EDIT: When I wrote this, I mistakenly included instructions below to delete the C:\pqsc\ folder. This is incorrect! If you haven't done that yet, don't remove that folder,- it's a legitimate Powerquest location. MY MISTAKE - SORRY
This is kind of long, but you can handle it. If any step fails, go to the next step anyway. You may find it best to print this out ahead of time.
Do you have a PowerQuest App like 'Drive Image' or 'Partition Magic' for this computer?
You have way too many things running at once for WinMe. We'll try to decontaminate and reduce the load at the same time.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Trojan Hunter Guard
Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue icon with a magnifying glass that can be difficult to see but the handle is red. Right click it and select settings. Uncheck "Load at startup" and "Enabled".
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Messenger Plus! 2
SpywareCleaner

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
If either Uninstaller ask you to reboot, do it. If neither does, reboot anyway.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

Make sure Every other window except HiJackThis is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reboot your computer
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Start Hijackthis. Open the Misc Tools Section, then Open Process Manager;
find each of these programs and click kill process (for any that exist).
Then, click Refresh, check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

DNETC.EXE
sctray.exe

-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion.
In Windows Explorer , select View, Details. Then navigate to these files/folders and delete them, if present:

EDIT :DON'T REMOVE THIS ONE ==>C:\pqsc\

C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2\ <==delete the whole folder
C:\Program Files\SpywareCleaner\ <==delete the whole folder
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FastDownloads
C:\MY DOCUMENTS\GARYS\DOWNLOADS\DNETC-WIN32-X86\DNETC.EXE

You may have to delete all underlying files and folder before a folder can be deleted.
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Choose Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. Check all the boxes. Edit: Except Don't check any box that refers to Compressed Files! Click OK. Wait patiently until it finishes
-----------------------------------------------------------
Go to Start, Programs, Trojan Hunter- run a scan and let it delete whatever it finds
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Let me know about PowerQuest, and anything else you noticed.

"SpywareCleaner" is one of the many poor performing spyware cleaners, a knockoff of Ad-Aware.
Gives false positive spyware detections as a goad to send money.
You can read about it and its friends here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
I will assume here you wish to remove it, and recommend you do so. This will get rid of a nuisance.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Spyware Cleaner

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The QuickTime program places an icon in the system tray for quick access to Apple QuickTime.
It is considered to be a resource hog. It is not necessary since QuickTime may be run manually even without a tray icon.
If you choose to remove it, you will also have to disable it from within QuickTime, in the following manner:
1) Run QuickTime from the Start -> Programs menu
2) Click on the Edit menu, then Preferences
3) Select QuickTime Preferences from the right-hand side menu
4) Uncheck the box next to "QuickTime System Tray Icon", and click OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------
You have RealPlayer running at Startup.
This is RealPlayer's autoupdate program and is not necessary for the program to function properly.
It is considered to be a resource hog.
You will still be able to start it manually if you need it.
We will fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change the setting in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\SPYWARE CLEANER\SPYWARECLEANER.Exe" /boot

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), select View, Details. Then Find and Delete this folder, if present:
C:\Program Files\SpywareCleaner\
Note if you you cannot delete.
You may have to delete all the underlying files and folders before a target folder can be deleted.
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Let me know how it goes.

garyinarush,
-----------------------------------------------------------
We seem to have had a problem getting the HJT entries removed.
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Now look at the very bottom of your screen. You will see a tab labeled HijackThis. If there are any others except HijackThis, please click on them one at a time, and click on the "X" in the upper right of their Window, so they disappear.
Once you ONLY have the HijackThis program running on your desktop, Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\SPYWARE CLEANER\SPYWARECLEANER.Exe" /boot
O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and install CCleaner from here.
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan. Open the CCleaner program.
( Do not use the Issues block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything Except Autocomplete Form History and the Advanced part of the Menu. Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), select View, Details. Then double click C:\ drive, doubleclick Program Files
You should be able to see quite a few folders. If it says they are hidden, etc. vote to unhide them.
Highlight this one yellow folder and click Delete, if present. We would like to remove this Spyware Cleaner folder.
Spyware Cleaner (the full path is C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\)
Note if you can find but not delete.
You may have to delete all the underlying files and folders before a target folder can be deleted.
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

garyinarush,
Your log looks OK to me. Just a few tips going forward:
I can only recommend that you be diligent about what programs you allow to Start automatically (the HJT O4's)
WinMe is very touchy about this.
------------------------------------------------------------
Disable and Enable Windows ME System Restore .
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files. You will also lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
Instructions are here : Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
This disable/re-enable sequence is not to be done regularly, but only once , directly after removal of a malware infection.
------------------------------------------------------------
Secure your Internet Explorer
- From within Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
- Click once on the Security Tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to - Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to - Prompt
- Click on the Advanced Tab
- Uncheck the box "Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)"
- Uncheck the box "Enable Install On Demand (Other)"
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Options page
------------------------------------------------------------
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.
------------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system. It also provides selective cookie management.
