Infected with Win32/Jeefo - HJT Log Attached

Unread postby kdene20 » February 6th, 2006, 4:10 am

I'm not quite sure how it happened, but I'm working on an old Windows 98 system, and I keep getting popups saying that c:\windows\svchost.exe is infected with Win32/Jeefo.A - below is my HijackThis log. I also get a runtime error with Yahoo Messenger (Yop.exe) on startup all the time. If there's a way to eliminate this problem or get rid of Yahoo Messenger although, please let me know. I just want to get rid of anything that could be of any trouble to my computer. Here's the log:

You appear to be running two (2) real-time antivirus tools (Norton and Yahoo). Please uninstall or disable one of them as they will conflict with each other.

Read over the following directions. Ask if anything appears unclear to you.

Download Clean.bat to your desktop: for later use to clean out your TEMPORARY and PREFETCH files.
http://www.thatcomputerguy.us/downloads/clean.bat

We will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet. Accordingly, it is probably a good idea to print out the following directions or copy them to a text file on your desktop using NOTEPAD. Read these instructions carefully and feel free to ask if you're unsure about anything.

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [POWERMANAGER] C:\WINDOWS\SVCHOST.EXE

O16 - DPF: {4C226336-4032-489F-9674-67E74225979B} (OTXMovie Class) - http://www.otxresearch.com/OTXMedia/OTXMedia.dll

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.

HIDDEN FILES: To make sure you can see all hidden files, please follow the directions here

SAFEMODE: Boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key at restart and choosing 'safe mode' menu option (explained here if needed).

Delete TEMPORARY FILES: Now, hunt down the most common temporary file locations and the temporary file clutter contained therein (and of possible malware hiding places):

Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE and hit enter.
When prompted select the C: drive and click ok.
Check the boxes for:
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Downloaded Program Files
  • Recycle Bin
  • Temporary Files

Click OK or Enter

For additional, more thorough cleaning and for multi-profile user configurations:
(*) Run Clean.bat to clean up your TEMPorary files.

***** Clean out the Recycle Bin for items removed below, ONLY once you have regained the full functional use of your PC.

Navigate to these files or folders using Windows Explorer (OR Start -> Search) and delete (if present):

DELETE FILES:

C:\WINDOWS\SVCHOST.EXE

POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log with any feedback as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

I Don't Think I Was Able To Remove Jeefo.A

Unread postby kdene20 » February 20th, 2006, 10:26 pm

Below is my HijackThis log. I followed the instructions carefully, but I was unable to remove svchost.exe in safe mode. My computer kept telling me that the program was in use. When I tried CTRL+ALT+DEL, it didn't list any processes other than Explorer as running. Now, when I start up my computer again, I get a Vet Resident Protection messages telling me that the virus is still infecting C:/windows/svchost.exe, and then a million other messages from Vet Resident Protection telling me that the virus has been cleaned from various files. Those messages are more annoying thanthe virus itself. Can I remove Vet Resident Protection, or is there a way to get it to leave me alone? I also still have the problem with Jeefo.A. Hee is my HijackThis log:

You still appear to have two (2) real-time antivirus (AV) tools running as well as potentially two (2) real-time protection tools running. They may be interfering with the proper functioning of your PC and the application of any attempted fix procedures.

Disable or Uninstall one of your AV tools (Yahoo AV or Norton):

Uninstall Norton AntiVirus if Add/Remove Programs does not work
Go to the section for your Symantec product version and your version of Windows for detailed removal instructions.

Norton AntiVirus/Norton Internet Security/Norton SystemWorks 2004/2005
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ts ... _lvl=&seg=

Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier
http://service4.symantec.com/SUPPORT/na ... Section3.2

Try disabling or uninstalling at least one of SPYWAREGUARD or Vet Resident Protection.

Please disable any of the above application(s), as it/they may hinder the removal of some entries. Otherwise, certain cleaning attempts may be wrongly recognized and blocked as hijacking attempts or other potentially inappropriate behavior. You can re-enable such tools after your computer is clean.

Disable SpywareGuard

  1. Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
  2. Then go to Menu, file, exit.
  3. Then confirm the program is closed

Re-run the fixes for:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [POWERMANAGER] C:\WINDOWS\SVCHOST.EXE

Post your latest HJT log and any current feedback.
