Vista Windows update error 8072EFE

I noticed a few days ago that windows (vista) would no longer update. I tried "Windows Update" under the start menu and got a error code 8072EFE.

My computer runs daily updates and scans with Avira, nothing found.
Ran Malwarebytes' and found 1 infected file:
C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Temp\1982.tmp (Rootkit.TDSS.Gen) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Still get error code 8072EFE when trying to update. When I go to "http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/" I get "The connection was reset."

Please do these tasks in the order given:

Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

Spybot - Search & Destroy

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
If the Uninstaller asks whether you want to remove all files and settings, answer YES. If it reports that it cannot remove all files, that's OK.

Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it. (Right click and Run as Administrator in Vista)
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.

Download and Run Rkill
Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:
One, Two,Three or Four

• Double click on Rkill. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7).
• A command window will open, then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
• Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.

Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue. If you cannot get one of the downloads to work for you, try one of the other links.
If you cannot get Rkill to run without being stopped, don't proceed further, and post back to tell me about it.

TDSSKiller
Please download the TDSSKiller.exe by Kaspersky... save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!

1. Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
   Vista - W7 users: Right-click and select "Run As Administrator".
   If TDSSKiller does not run... rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. ektfhtw.com).
   If you don't see file extensions, please see: How to change the file extension.
2. Click the Start Scan button. Do not use the computer during the scan!
3. If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
4. If malicious objects are found, they will show in the "Scan results - Select action for found objects" and offer 3 options.
   • Ensure Cure (default) is selected... then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
5. A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
6. Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
