Slow Performance in Win XP

Unread postby shellshock » August 11th, 2010, 7:18 am

Hi there
I am running a home computer with Win XP and within the last 3 days it has started to run very slowly. For example it now take up to 10 minute to boot up and when it is running it is very slow in using any programs. I have gone through the steps you reconmend to maintain the system ie doing defrags clearing uot unsed programs and all the other steps you suggest. However I have had no luck. Also lastnight when I shut the machine down it did not do so it seemed stuck on the final blue screen saying it was shuting down but went no futher.I also note that my hard drive seems to be working even if I am not doing anything on the computer. So here are the two logs for you to have a look at
Hijack this first

Hi shellshock,
Please do not install, remove or scan with anything except what I request while we are repairing the machine.
Actually I am almost surprised it runs at all.
crawler.com is listed in blocklists as an unsafe site. I would suggest you stay away from it if you value your machine.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.crawler.com/search/dispatche ... p=aus&qkw=%s&tbid=66020
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.crawler.com/search/ie.aspx?tb_id=66020
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = http://dnl.crawler.com/support/sa_custo ... TbId=66020
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.crawler.com/search/ie.aspx?tb_id=66020
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://dnl.crawler.com/support/sa_custo ... TbId=66020
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SmartDefrag] "C:\Program Files\IObit\IObit SmartDefrag\IObit SmartDefrag.exe" /StartUp
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Advanced SystemCare 3] "C:\Program Files\IObit\Advanced SystemCare 3\AWC.exe" /startup

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
AntispywareBot
COMODO Internet Security
Advanced SystemCare 3
IObit SmartDefrag Beta4.01

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Trojan Hunter Guard
Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue icon with a magnifying glass that can be difficult to see but the handle is red. Right click it and select settings. Uncheck "Load at startup" and "Enabled".
---------------------------------------------
Run CKScanner
Download CKScanner from HERE
Important - Save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
After a couple minutes or less, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
A message box will verify the file saved.
Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
----------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it. (Right click and Run as Administrator in Vista)
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next reply please. Use two replies if you prefer.

So we are looking for the log from the CKScanner, and the two logs from RSIT.
Let me know if any Removals are unsuccessful, and how it goes.
Use separate replies for the logs if it's easier.

Hi Askey127
I have run all the procedures as you have suggested. When doing the Remove programs I was unable to find IObit SmartDefrag Beta4.01 on the list so was unable to remove it.
When Running Temp File Cleanerthe reboot took over an hour so I did a manual reboot. Also I have noticed just before I got your reply to my inital request that my Avast Program is not updateing automatically so I now have the red shield at the bottom RH corner of my screen.

Anyway here is the CKScanner Log

shellshock,
(Please do not use any kind of Registry Booster or Registry Optimizer, EVER. )

A couple questions, if I may:
  • Do you use the Debug toolbar?
  • Do you use rewriteable type CDs or DVDs (CD-RW or DVD-RW) ?

Right click the Avast! icon and see if it will update manually.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entry:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click on The Update tab. Choose Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
------------------------------------------------------------
Please download the GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.
  • XP : Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • VISTA/Win7: Right click the .exe file and chose Run as Administrator. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than the System drive (which is typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      See image below
      Image
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
**Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
Note: Do not run any other programs while Gmer is running.

So we are looking for:
  • Answers to my two questions.
  • Contents of the Malwarebytes log
  • Contents of the Gmer.txt results.
Use separate replies if it is more convenient.

Hi Askey127
Thanks for your reply
Could you please explain what the Debug toolbar is sorry if I sound thick on this I have not heard of it before
Yes I do use rewriteable type CD's or DVDs and I do have a CD-RW and A DVD-RW on my system
The Avast will not update manually

I have managed to remove the O20 - Appinit_DLLs using Hijack This
When I tried to update MalwareBytes Anti-Malware I got the following error message
on update error occured code 732(0,0)
Anyway I run it and here is the log

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.44
Database version: 3779
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702

15/08/2010 22:23:03
mbam-log-2010-08-15 (22-23-03).txt

Scan type: Quick Scan
Objects scanned: 116292
Time elapsed: 23 minute(s), 4 second(s)

Memory Processes Infected: 0
Memory Modules Infected: 0
Registry Keys Infected: 0
Registry Values Infected: 0
Registry Data Items Infected: 0
Folders Infected: 0
Files Infected: 0

(No malicious items detected)

Registry Values Infected:
(No malicious items detected)

Registry Data Items Infected:
(No malicious items detected)

Folders Infected:
(No malicious items detected)

Files Infected:
(No malicious items detected)

I then downloaded the GMER Rootkit Scanner but when I tried to run it all that happened was that the system rebooted !. I have tried 3 times with the same result. However I noticed that on the 2nd attempt I run it so to speak form the link you give where it gives you the option to either save it or run it I got as far as hitting the scan button which then made the system reboot? I then tried again form the copy I have on my desktop this time it just rebooted the system
Look forward to your reply

shellshock,
The Debug Toolbar home page is here: http://www.my-debugbar.com/wiki/
If you don't use it for web development or other, on your machine the uninstaller is here (your call):
C:\Documents and Settings\John Nowell\My Documents\DebugBar\uninstall.exe
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DXM6Patch_981116] C:\WINDOWS\p_981116.exe /Q:A

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Read about the startup program CTHelper here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startup ... -6637.html
Read about CTFMON here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startup ... -1121.html
If you want to stop either from starting up automatically, let me know.
-----------------------------------------------------------
We can use Winpatrol to enable or disable startups like CTHelper until the system behaves the way you want.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.

Let me know how it goes, and how the machine is running.

Unread postby shellshock » August 16th, 2010, 4:18 pm

I have removed the Debug Tool Bar
Then I removed the O4 - HKLM etc file using Hijack This
I have read up on CTHelper and I think for the time being I will leave well alone
I then installed WinPetrol I Presume this is to replace the COMODO Program I was using before. I know this may sound supid is this a firewall?
I still can not get AVAST to update even maually and I have the same problem with Malware I get an error message when I try to update.
Overall my computer is running better but is still slow

shellshock,
------------------------------------------------
  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open, then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue. If you cannot get one of the downloads to work for you, try one of the other links.
If you cannot get Rkill to run without being stopped, don't proceed further, and post back to tell me about it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
You will need to disable all your antivirus software BEFORE running ComboFix.
.
  • Download ComboFix from here
  • Rename it while saving the download to zzz.exe and save it to your Desktop. Do not try to rename it after it has been saved to your desktop, or the infection may prevent you from using it.
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop, not from any other folder on your computer**
  • DISABLE AVAST
Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like this: Image) and choose (Stop On-Access Protection)
Avast On-Access Protection is now disabled.
Reverse the procedure to re-enable the On-Access Protection.
  • Now start ComboFix (zzz.exe)
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it. (You would).
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running.
  • When finished, the report will open. Post the log in your next reply, and then Reenable your protection software
A copy of the log will be located here if you need it-> C:\ComboFix.txt
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

The Recovery Console produces a brief (2 second) black screen at bootup which allows an additional technical resource for repair in case of a major failure. In regular operation, you can ignore it.

Askey127

I have run Rkill from my desktop as you suggested with no problems below is the Rkill log

This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.
Ran as John Nowell on 17/08/2010 at 9:49:01.

Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running:

C:\Documents and Settings\John Nowell\Desktop\rkill.exe

Rkill completed on 17/08/2010 at 9:49:10.

I then downloaded ComboFix and saved it as zzz.exe and then disabled AVAST.
I then run Combofix as per your instructions. I noticed though that Win petrol was still running should I have disabled this as well? As during the ComboFix process Win Petrol promted me about changes which I accepted. Anyway below is the Combofix Log

ComboFix 10-08-16.03 - John Nowell 17/08/2010 10:38:12.1.1 - x86

Looks quite good.
There is an abnormal service relating to either a Turtle Beach sound card or the Voyetra Record Producer.
It looks like something did not happen correctly during installation.
I would like to remove the software and service as it is, and re-install the software.
Do you have the installation disk for Voyetra or a copy of the installer?

My system has a Creative Labs Sound Card and a copy of Voyetra Record Producer. What is interesting is that when I try to use Voyetra I now get asked for the registration Key. I know for a fact that before this Malware problem it was working ok.I purchased the voyetra software on line in 2004 as a downloadable upgrade, so if I delete it I will have to go to there website download it again and install it and hope that the product ID key I have got works as in the past about 2008 I reformatted this machine and when I asked Voyetra to enable my software thay said that this would be the last time thay would do this. However it looks like I have no choice anyway. So do you think I should go ahead and delete my existing voyetra programe?

shellshock,
The Voyetra service is looking for a file in a Local Settings Temp folder.
O23 - Service: asurscsi - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNNO~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\MSID.tmp (file missing)
This does not appear to be normal, but is not likely a malware issue.
Whether it could cause slowdowns in your system I don't know, but that's the reason I asked about it.
I can't say that you should Uninstall Voyetra and maybe lose it permanently.
I would probably leave it.

One last check to be sure no malware lingers. This is slow but thorough.
Run an Online Kaspersky WebScan
