Redirection when I click on search results

Unread postby dgebala » August 9th, 2010, 11:43 pm

My hardware is an IBM T42 running XP Pro SP3
The problem is that when I click on my search results, I get redirected to various pages or search engines. I am browsing in Firefox, but the redirection sometimes pops up in IE. It's very annoying, but I am more concerned about theft of other information when I am using the browser.

Hi dgebala,

Welcome to the forum.

My nickname is deltalima and I will be helping you with your computer problems.

The logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Uninstall List
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply.

Please let me know if this computer is used for business.

Thanks deltalima

This is a personal machine, not used for business.
I should tell you that I have run Stopzilla and isolated some malware since my original post...does that affect the suggested actions?

Hi dgebala,

I have run Stopzilla and isolated some malware since my original post

OK, thanks for letting me know, please make no more changes unless I ask for them.

Norton AntiVirus 2004

That is a very old version, do you still receive updated antivirus definitions for that software?

Hi dgebala,

I don't receive any NAV updates

An updated antivirus program is vital.

Please remove Norton and the install one of the free ones I describe below.

  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs,
    highlight Norton AntiVirus 2004
    click Remove
highlight Norton AntiVirus 2004 (Symantec Corporation)
    click Remove
    highlight Norton AntiVirus Parent MSI
    click Remove
    highlight Norton WMI Update
    click Remove
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.

Norton Removal Tool

Please go to the Norton Removal Tool main page Here
  • Under Choose your product: click on the I have a Norton 2004 or 2005 product link.
  • Please Download and run the Norton Removal Tool then Reboot your computer.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors.

Note: You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Once installed, please update and run a full scan then post the logs in your next reply.

Uninstalled NAV using the tool I downloaded. I also uninstalled STOPZilla based on your suggestion that I only have a single anti virus/anti malware tool installed. Installed Avast and scanned: no infected files found.

Hi dgebala,

Download and run OTL
Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log along with OTL.txt and Extras.txt from the OTL scan into your next reply.

Hi dgebala,

MBRCheck

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click on MBRCheck.exe to run it.
  • It will show a Black screen with some information.
  • if an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
  • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of that file in you're next reply.

Hi dgebala,

The infection that you have is stored in the boot section of your hard disk. Failure of this "MBR" to do its job properly would result in a machine that could not boot up at all, so any changes to the MBR have to be done very carefully.

In your case, a replacement of the MBR with a standard one would most likely work, but is not without risk. If the computer comes with a Recovery Partition you will loose the ability to restore the computer from that partition, any future reinstalls would need to be done from original media.

If you understand the risks involved and are prepared to reinstall the operating system if things go wrong we can proceed.

Please let me know what you would like to do.

So does that mean that the rescue and recovery partition that would restore the machine to its original brand new state has been corrupted? That's not an option at this point?
