Unable to access Windows Update - 0x80072EFE

I am currently running a windows XP SP3 machine with TrendMicro internet security. I am using Firefox as a browser and Thunderbird for e-mail. Recently, I noticed that windows had stopped downloading automatic updates. When I attempt to download things manually, I receive error code 0x80072EFE. I am also unable to access the microsoft update website manually, as well as a few other sites(the computer does nothing when I click on the link). I have tried directly connecting my computer to the modem with no better results, as well as the suspension of third party firewall checks suggested under microsoft support article 836941. I have checked and there are no entries in the hosts file and the computer is running "direct access <No Proxy Server>". Upon performing a full system scan with TrendMicro, it recommended three windows fixes. I downloaded them using a different computer and installed them manually. A subsequent full system scan came up clean, but the inability to update still exists. I'm out of ideas I found on the net, and am nervous about being sold a bill of goods in my effort to fix this problem. I am keeping my laptop isolated until this is resolved, as I don't want to contaminate a second machine, but it is available for downloads and other network access. This computer is not used for business. I installed that to keep my skills sharp, but don't think either of those programs work any more.

That is where I currently work. I sometimes have to access my work computer from home in two ways, one using the service "GoToMyPC.com" to log onto one machine, the other using the remote web workplace through Internet Explorer (primarily to check e-mails). That is the only time that I use Internet Explorer.
