Search Settings v 1.2.3, Spigot Inc

Hi, am getting a search settings pop up every time my computer is switched on. Specifically "Search Settings v 1.2.3" from Spigot, Inc. Really want to remove, but am having a hard time doing it. Tried for hijackthis log but keep getting text box about "for some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts. file" - HELP!

An Uninstall List, while very helpful, is essentially useless without a HijackThis log.
