LO again Cypher.

My wife's just got back from an unsuccessful shopping trip to our nearest large town. She's not a happy bunny so we're going out for a meal. That means I won't be doing a lot more on this issue 'till tomorrow.

WRT Windows Defender, it says it's turned off so I'm not sure why you can still see it in the logs. I'll try disabling it in msconfig, if you think that'll help.

Sorry about not putting things on the desktop; I hate having anything other than shortcuts there but, 'needs must' I suppose

Hi johnt99.
Don't try to disable it via misconfig we can get back to it later.
The tools need to be saved to you're desktop or they may not run correctly.

Cypher,

Logs below as requested. The redirect seems to have gone away but I notice from the task scheduler that it still says the XCOKSBH job is running. However, the .dll that it wants to call has gone.

Re: Google Links Being Redirected

Unread postby Cypher » July 7th, 2010, 11:02 am

Hijohnt99.
The redirect seems to have gone away but I notice from the task scheduler that it still says the XCOKSBH job is running.

Good but stay with me we still have work to do.

SystemLook
  • Right-click SystemLook.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    *XCOKSBH*

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Next.

I see you have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware: installed.

  • Launch the application, Check for Updates >> Perform Quick Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

LO again Cypher,

Below is the log from the ESET run - nothing found. The XCOKSBH task is no longer running: It's last entry in the Task Scheduler was "Stopped 07/07/2010 18:00:35" but there are still references to it in the registry. Maybe I should delete those too?

Adobe Reader 8.0 said it was deleted but still shows up in the 'Installed Programs' list - another registry glitch?. I have installed v 9.3.2. as instructed.

Norton 360 has been re-enabled and Windows Defender will restart at the next reboot.

I hope Brenda hasn't lost such things as bank logon details now that ATF Cleaner has deleted all her cookies. :-)

Hi johnt99.
The XCOKSBH task is no longer running: It's last entry in the Task Scheduler was "Stopped 07/07/2010 18:00:35" but there are still references to it in the registry. Maybe I should delete those too?

We can take a look for any reg entries.
Adobe Reader 8.0 said it was deleted but still shows up in the 'Installed Programs' list - another registry glitch?.

Ok try the instructions below.

SystemLook
  • Right-click SystemLook.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :regfind
    *XCOKSBH*

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Next.

Please download Add Remove Program Cleaner to your desktop.

  • Right-click on addremovecleaner And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Locate Adobe Reader 8.0 in the menu and click once on it to highlight.
  • Now click on Remove from add/remove programs list.
  • At the prompt click on Yes then Exit.
  • Now delete addremovecleaner from the desktop, empty the Recycle Bin and reboot the computer.

Hi Cypher,

SystemLook didn't find anything - log below - but I've also attached the results of a Regedit find & export with the remaining entries for XCOKSBH.

The Adobe Reader 8 entry has now gone.

Google searches still OK.

Morning Cypher,

Didn't want to risk me using Regedit then? :-)

OTM Log attached.

Not sure if your duplication of the CLSID delete line was deliberate but OTM had several goes at getting rid of an entry that was no longer there.

All processes killed

Hi johnt99.
Didn't want to risk me using Regedit then?

When it comes to the reg i don't risk anything ;)
I think we might have got there.

Good work.

your latest set of logs appear to be clean!
This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Clean up with OTM

  • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
, This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTM main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

You can now delete any tools we used if they remain on your Desktop.

Create a new, clean System Restore point

  • Click Start, Right Click on Computer, and select Properties.
  • In the left pane, click System Protection > Creat.
  • Give this restore point a descriptive name and click Create.
  • Click Apply and OK.

Note: Do not clear infected/old System Restore points before creating a new System Restore point first!

Flush infected System Restore points

  • Click Start, Right Click on Computer, and select Properties.
  • In the left pane, click System Protection.
  • untick the box labeled Vista C: an click Turn off system restore.
  • Click Apply and OK.
  • Restart your computer.

Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

Now we needed to deal with security vulnerabilities

Install internet explorer 8

You can find information and install IE 8 from Here

Update Firefox

  • Your version of Firefox is outdated.
  • In the Firefox browser click Help > Check for updates to install the latest version.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Install SiteAdvisor
SiteAdvisor is a toolbar for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox which alerts you if you're about to enter a potentially dangerous website.
You can find more information and download it from Here

Install WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
For more information, please visit HERE

MVPS Hosts

Install MVPS Hosts File From Here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
You can Find the Tutorial HERE

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Microsoft Windows Update
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Install the updates immediately if they are found.
To update Windows
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update > Check for updates.
To update Office
Open up any Office program.
Go to Help > Check for Updates

Read some information HERE On how to prevent Malware

Is your pc running slow?
Read What to do if your Computer is running slowly

I would be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Safe surfing!
