Is there any more protection in a newer AV program(IE: Norton 2010) with updated definitions then an older one(IE: Norton 2005) with updated definitions? I know there may be addons like firewalls and such but I'm just curious about the AV part of it.
It really depends on how the application was developed.
If Norton made their definitions compatible with older versions then there would be no difference in protection levels. If Norton made their definitions version specific then you would need the latest version to get the best protection.
Don't forget that while definitions play a big part in how much an AV tool will detect some AVs also employ heuristics that may be improved upon with each new version of the application.
