Hello Nashy.
My name is Airscape and I'll be helping you with your malware issues.
The logs can take a while to research. Please be patient with me.

Take note of the following before we begin:
  • Post to this thread only and please stick to it until you are given an All Clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that your computer is clean.
  • The instructions I give are for This computer only and should not be used on any other pc.
  • Do NOT run any tools/scans unless I instruct you to.
  • Try not to install/uninstall any programs while we work. This will add extra time researching your logs.
  • If you have found assistance elsewhere and no longer require our help, please say so, and this topic will be closed.
  • If you have any problems, please stop and ask before proceeding with any fixes.
  • ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST

Note: As I'm still in training here at MRU everything I post must be checked by an expert first. So there may be a slight delay in between posts.

Important:
Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any important files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Hi Nashy,

My friends laptop appears to be infected as an internet explorer page keeps getting redirected.

If I may ask, why did your friend not join the forum and create their own topic?

Please do the following:

Random's System Information Tool (RSIT)
  • Please download RSIT by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Note: both logs can be found in the C:\rsit folder if you lose them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gmer
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here & save it to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time protection so your security program's will not conflict with Gmer.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
    Image
    Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. UNCHECK the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOTKIT" entries
Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Logs/information to post in next reply:
  • RSIT logs (log.txt and info.txt)
  • GMER log
  • How is the pc running?

Hi Airscape

In reply to your question about why my friend has not joined the forum himself, the reason is that he is not very good on computers and I offered to help him as I have done for other friends before.

I had a few problems with the GMER scan. halfway through the scan the laptop rebooted for no reason and when it restarted the wireless will not connect. Do you think that this may be a symptom of the infection?

I will reboot and try again and repost tomorrow, but it is very late here and I have to be in work in about 6 hours, so I am going to bed after I post this reply.

The 2 otherRSIT logs are here.

Hi nashy,

It look like there are leftovers of what appears to be a Password Stealer.
It allows outsiders to monitor your Internet activity and private information. It then sends the stolen data to a hacker site.

If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being: Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it is best that you know the full impact of this infection.

Please read this for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Due to the length of time the infections may have been on board, which may have came with others/lowered security settings etc, I would recommend you reformat and reinstall Windows. The infection in question is known to disable security software and make irreversible changes to the machine. The safest course of action would be to reformat. Judging by the log in seems AVG may only have been installed recently, the malware would have had alot of time to do damage to the pc.

If you still want to clean the pc instead of reformatting, then you will need to let me know in your next reply.

If you do decide to reformat, please let me know, and this topic will be closed.

Wow.

I'll let my friend know tonight about his pc.

He has since bought another laptop to conduct his personal affairs but did intend using this one for other members of his family.

I would like to progress with attempting a clean up please.

Thank you for your ongoing assistance

Hi Nashy,

I'm afraid, it has come to my attention that the infection(s) involved will require a actual reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system. I'm afraid at this time this is the most prudent course of action and I highly suggest you make your friend aware of this.

If any questions feel free to ask, if not please acknowledge this post, and this topic will be closed.
