Please Help! Tried many removal programs to no avail

Unread postby DreT » June 13th, 2010, 10:06 pm

Hello. A few days ago I was automatically being redirected to bogus search engines and advertisements after clicking on Google search links in both Firefox and IE8. I went on forums to read how other situations were handled and tried using at least 4 to 5 programs to clean my computer, but the programs were in disagreement with each other. Some found malware and Trojans and others found nothing.

When something was found, I had it automatically deleted or cleaned. However, I am still being redirected and I receive the following message when trying to access Microsoft Update for Windows XP either inputting url or google search: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage."

Or on Firefox: "The connection was reset. The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

However, I have no problems connecting to other websites. It seems this virus does everything in its power to prevent me from accessing microsoft updates on the Microsoft website or the automatic update on my computer.

This rootkit or virus might be hidden and it is definitely resilient.

I hope you can help me!

Thank you very much,

Dre T.

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal
Sorry for the delay in answering your request.
We have had more logs than we could handle in a timely manner.
If you still wish to receive help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please proceed as follows:
------------------------------------------------------------
Please download OTM and save to your Desktop.
Don't do anything with it yet.

------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to your Desktop. It will create a new folder.
  • Inside the new folder, if you have XP, double click ERUNT.exe. If you have Vista, right click ERUNT.exe and choose "Run as administrator"
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: If you ever need to restore your registry later, you would go to the default backup folder and start ERDNT.exe
(The default backup folder is C:\Windows\ERDNT\ and the backups are saved according to date stamp)
---------------------------------------------
Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it. Give permissions if asked.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :reg
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

DreT,
----------------------------------------------
Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Now Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

DreT,
I don't see anything in that part of the registry that would cause your symptoms.
There are rootkits that do this, however.

Let's see if we can get some information on that possibility:
------------------------------------------------
Download and Run Rkill
Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:
One, Two,Three or Four
  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.
If you cannot get Rkill to run without being stopped, don't proceed further, and post back to tell me about it.
------------------------------------------------------------
Please download the GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.
  • XP : Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • VISTA/Win7: Right click the .exe file and chose Run as Administrator. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than the System drive (which is typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      See image below
      Image
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
**Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
Note: Do not run any other programs while Gmer is running.

I am unable to post the log because of the following:

After running the scan for a few minutes I receive the infamous "blue screen of death" common with the XP. It tells me it had to shutdown and was caused by file, "fxtdapob.sys"

I've tried restarting and scanning multiple times but the same problem reoccurs. The scan is unable to finish.

What is my next option?

Thanks,

Dre

dreT,
--------------------------------------------
TDSSKiller
  • Download the file TDSSKiller.zip and save it on your desktop
  • Extract the file tdskiller.zip, it will create a folder named tdsskiller on your desktop
  • Double-click the tdsskiller Folder on your desktop.
  • Right-click on tdsskiller.exe and click Copy then Paste it directly on to your Desktop.
  • Highlight and copy (Ctrl+C) the text in the codebox below.
    Code: Select all
    "%userprofile%\desktop\tdsskiller.exe" -l "%userprofile%\desktop\tdsskiller.txt"
  • Click Start, click Run... and paste (Ctrl+V) the text above into the Open: line and click OK.
  • Wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
  • Open tdskiller.txt on your desktop and post the contents in your next reply

I tried doing the above but it said Windows cannot find C:\Documents.

I ran the program off the desktop and it scanned the computer. It found one rootkit and said it would clean it on reboot. I immediately rebooted and it seems I am no longer being redirected and Windows Update is finally working.

I think this was the program I needed to fix my problem!

Thank you so much!

Is there anyway I can donate to this website for your help?

DreT,
Since there WAS a rootkit on your machine, you have to assume that any data passed thru the machine (credit cards, financial, passwords, etc.) may have been compromised. Please take whatever personal precautions you think necessary.

Rootkits can do whatever they want, so we can never be absolutely certain that the machine can be trusted going forward.
The only certain remedy would be to Reformat and Re-install Windows.

If you wish to support the site, see the Support Us button at the top of the page.
