Unread postby maddie » May 15th, 2010, 4:56 pm

Hello. my computer got infected last thursday and my friend has been trying to help me fix it, but says i need to now come to you for help.

at first, the computer just wouldn't let me do anything. everytime i clicked something, for example, internet, it would say something along the lines of, you cannot enter the internet because its infected and so it tried to make me install some antivirus thing, which i assuming was actually malware so i didn't accept that.

i've done a MalwareBytes full scan, and i've enclosed the log;

Unread postby Cypher » May 17th, 2010, 6:30 am

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forums.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
Read Back up your files

please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.
  • If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Vista Advice:
  • All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.
  • The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC).
  • When prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Next.

  • Please download this tool from Microsoft.
  • Right click on MGADiag.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it.
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in the window.
  • Save this file and copy/paste it in your next reply.

Hi maddie.
First of all, i would just like to thank you very much for your help.

You're most welcome.
And then, i tried to run the Microsoft Tool, so i pressed copy and it came up with the following message;

Did you run the Microsoft Tool as admin as in right clicking on it?
Please try running it again as admin and post the log in you're next reply.

Next.

Uninstall programs
  • Click on Start.
  • All programs.
  • Accessories.
  • Run.
  • In the open text box copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click Ok.
  • Uninstall the following
Microsoft Choice Guard

Next.

Fix HijackThis entries

Run HijackThis

If using Vista, you must right click (hijackthis.exe) and choose "Run As Administrator".
  • If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
  • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
  • When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present)
  • Note: Only check those items listed below.
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
    O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar1.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [BrowserBallot] browserchoice.exe
    O23 - Service: ASKService - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\AskService.exe

  • After checking these items... CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis.
  • Click the Fix Checked ...button...to remove the entries you checked.

sorry to be a pain for the Microsoft Tool thing? Do i need to be in the Administrators log in place. Because i'm in my section of the computer which isn't the administrator.

And also i'm looking under the uninstall section and i can't find the program to remove. would it be under any other name?

--edit--

i tried again with microsoft tool and the same message came up. this time i definitely clicked run as admin.

And also i'm looking under the uninstall section and i can't find the program to remove. would it be under any other name?
You don't need to be logged in as admin you just have to right click on MGADiag.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it.
Microsoft Choice Guard is in you're uninstall list but if you can't locate it just leave that part for now, post the requested logs when ready :)

Hi maddie.
How is you're PC performing now any further problems?

Fix HijackThis entries

Run HijackThis

If using Vista, you must right click (hijackthis.exe) and choose "Run As Administrator".
  • If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
  • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
  • When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present)
  • Note: Only check those items listed below.
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {E312764E-7706-43F1-8DAB-FCDD2B1E416D} - (no file)

  • After checking these items... CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis.
  • Click the Fix Checked ...button...to remove the entries you checked.
  • Choose YES...when prompted to fix the selected items.

Next.

Download and run OTM

Download OTM.exe by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Right-click then copy the following code, Do not include the word Code.
    Code: Select all
    :Services
    ASKService

    :Files
    C:\Program Files\AskBarDis

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]

    • Return to OTM, right-click then paste the code into the blank box below Image
    • Next click on the large Image button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Next.

Post a New HJT Log
  • Start HijackThis.
  • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the "Main Menu"...button.
  • From the Main Menu... Press the "Do System Scan and Save a Log File"...button.
  • When completed...Notepad will open with the new "hijackthis.log" file contents.
  • Copy/paste the entire (hijackthis.log) file contents in your next reply.

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • OTM log.
  • HijackThis log.
  • Please give me an update on your computers performance.

    • Archives
  • Click on My Computer under Scan. * This will take a while. Please be patient *.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
