Do I still have a virus?

Unread postby JACrazy » April 23rd, 2010, 9:37 pm

A few days ago I was attacked by a Trojan which installed a fake antivirus called VirusXP. I have run several malwarebyte scans and MSE until they no longer find anything. But ever since then winpatrol has been popping up with an alert whether to allow to run a DLL as an App.(rundll32/exe, ieframe.dll,OpenURL%|). I keep clicking no each time to be safe in case it is a virus. But this alert keeps reappearing even 10-20 minutes. What should I do?

Hi JACrazy,
Sorry for the delay in answering your request.
We have had more logs than we could handle in a timely manner.

Until we find out what is going on, continue to tell Winpatrol to refuse access.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

Re: Do I still have a virus?

Unread postby askey127 » April 29th, 2010, 8:11 am

JACrazy,
A lot to do here. Just take one step at a time.
Please do what I request and don't install or remove anything otherwise until we have finished cleaning up your machine.
-----------------------------------------------
Please Note Our Policy on the Use of P2P (Person to Person / Peer to Peer) file sharing programs
It is posted here: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=33112
As a condition of receiving our help, I have included the P2P program utorrent in the removal instructions below, so we are not wasting our time.
You can be fairly confident this is a principal reason your computer is infected
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext =http://shop.trendmicro.com/tmasy/eol.ht ... HEIGHT=480
R3 - URLSearchHook: SearchSettings Class - {E312764E-7706-43F1-8DAB-FCDD2B1E416D} - C:\Program Files\Search Settings\kb128\SearchSettings.dll
O3 - Toolbar: StumbleUpon Toolbar - {5093EB4C-3E93-40AB-9266-B607BA87BDC8} - C:\Program Files\StumbleUpon\StumbleUponIEBar.dll
O8 - Extra context menu item: StumbleUpon PhotoBlog It! - res://StumbleUponIEBar.dll/blogimage
O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT(RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
µTorrent
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
Java(TM) 6 Update 14
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Messenger Plus! Live
StumbleUpon IE Toolbar
Norton Security Scan
PC-Doctor for Windows

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-------------------------------------------------------
Check Status of Windows Firewall
Got to Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel and double click on Windows Firewall
Verify that the General tab shows On (Recommended) as checked.
If not, put a check there and click OK
------------------------------------------
UNINSTALL Flash Player using this:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
-------------------
REBOOT
-------------------
Get the Newest Version Flash Player
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ (Be sure to UNCHECK the Toolbar)
------------------------------------------------------------
Older versions of Java have been vulnerable to malware infections in the past. It is important to install the newest version and make sure all older ones have been removed.
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.

Let me know how it goes, and/or anything that did not appear to work properly.

Thanks for the help, I never noticed I had my firewall turned off.
It seems that the problem was either with my pc doctor or messenger plus live, since i did everything except uninstall those two, but the winpatrol still came up. I uninstalled those and now the alert is gone.

Is it okay to reinstall any of the programs I deleted though?

JACrazy,
It's really important, if you value your PC at all, to stay away from P2P file sharing programs, like utorrent, Bittorrent, Azureus, Limewire, Vuze.
Criminals have "planted" thousands upon thousands of infections in the "free" shared files. Some of the recent infections can turn your machine into a doorstop.
It's also very important to avoid any "cracks" or "Keygens" that allow unauthorized use of programs. These files also are loaded with "plants".

You don't need PC Doctor, and Messenger Plus has carried LOP infections in the past.
By the way, my personal opinion is that the Roxio suite is, to be gracious, substandard, and since it fosters file sharing, I would not allow it on one of my machines.
There are other, better CD burners out there. If you don't use Roxio I would Uninstall it also, but in any case I wouldn't use the file sharing aspect. Roxio uses a lot of system processes just sitting there.
StumbleUpon is an adware purveyor and behavior tracker. I would not re-install it.
Bear in mind that virtually ALL toolbars are for the benefit of the purveyor, not for the benefit of you.

I would keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and every week I would update it and run a scan. It is currently the best Anti-spyware program out there.

Now let's take a few more steps.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

HPIZplus450

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Replace the Current HOSTS File with MVPs
Download HostsXpert and unzip (extract) it to your computer, somewhere where you can find it.
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to launch the program. Give whatever Permissions are required.
  • In the bottom half of the left pane, click on File Handling
  • If the first button at the top is labeled Make Writeable?, click on it so the label changes to Make Read Only
  • Click third button from the bottom, labeled Download. A couple new buttons will appear at the top.
  • Click on the top button labeled MVPs Hosts and choose Replace
  • When asked to verify if you want to Replace present Hosts file, click OK.
  • When it finishes , click on File Handling again.
  • Click the button at the top labeled Make Read Only, so the label changes to Make Writeable?
  • Hit the X in the upper right corner to exit HostsXpert
If you have a separate third party firewall, or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Enumerate Scheduled Tasks (Check for LOP Infection)
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir %Windir%\tasks /a h >> "%userprofile%\desktop\jobs.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close quickly. This is normal.
A file named jobs.txt will appear on your Desktop. Please copy/paste its contents in your reply.

Unread postby JACrazy » May 2nd, 2010, 3:05 pm

Actually I downloaded the StumbleUpon toolbar myself from the Internet Explorer 8 extensions gallery, if its on Microsofts website I would assume its safe... I dont use IE anymore so I wont reinstall it.

Thanks for the help though.
