unable to access internet from windows XP apps via network

Unread postby ppearl » April 24th, 2010, 6:24 pm

Every 24 hours or so my computer seems to go off-line to the internet although I am still able to ping google .com and microsoft .com. and othe sites. Rebooting fixes the problem for about another 24 hours. Disabling and renewing ipconfig does not help. flushing DNS also does not help. I notice that when I am on line such as right now, the wirless link to the cable router keeps on renewing itself for unknown reasons. I consulting my ISP and they could find nothing wrong although they noticed that I have a stange internet connection in my netrwork list "Internet Gateway" in addition to the wireless internet connection. I am unable to disbale the "internet gateway" since it appears to be "in use or busy".
I believe I have attached (downloaded?) the uninstall and highjack this log.

I used your services about 2 months ago when over a period of about one week we managed to find and remove a trojan which prevented my system operating at all. We thought this problem had been fixed then but no such luck.

Paul Pearl

I just found out that i was supposed to paste my highjack file so here goes........

Hi ppearl,
Sorry for the delay in answering your request.
We have had more logs than we could handle in a timely manner.
If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please proceed as follows:

I want to try a few things before getting into the spyware search.
Do you know whether your Router is still using the original default password for its administrator account, or did you change it? (This is the password needed to make the router settings)

We can doublecheck your connection routing on the PC side:
Go to Start, Run and type the command word cmd into the box. Hit <Enter>
A window will pop up. (Don't try to move the cursor in the window.)
Type the following (there is a space on either side of the double arrow in this line):
ipconfig/all >> c:\ip.txt
Hit <Enter>
Next, type exit, and hit the Enter key again. The window will disappear.
-----------------------------------
Now go to Start, My Computer and double-click on C:\ drive.
Click View , Details in the top menu.
Find a file in the list named ip.txt
Double click it and you should see Notepad popup with a few lines of information in it.
Please Copy the contents and paste back in a reply here.
----------------------------------------------------
Compose A Script to Locate Files
Please highlight, copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the text inside the quote into a new Notepad document.
For %%a in (
"brakecodec4348.vxe"
"kdszs.vxe"
"tmpC.tmp"
) do (
dir c:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find %%a >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
)
pause
Save it on your Desktop as file type "All Files" (NOT as "Text Documents") and name it FindMe.bat
Close Notepad.
Double click FindMe.bat on your Desktop.
A window will open and close in a minute or two. This is normal.
A new file icon named look.txt will appear on your desktop. In your next reply, please post the contents of the look.txt file, or tell me if it's blank.

So tell me what you can about the password, and the contents of ip.txt and look.txt
Use separate replies if you wish.

Hi

Thanks for your help. The problem is still there. I changed my password from the default as soon as I received the router. I have pasted the contents of IP below
Look was empty. Other things you should know are that when the system gets into its strange state, I can often still ping sites like google and microsoft but I cannot access the internet from any windows application. Also my network list shows a connection called "Internet Gateway" which I am unable to disable (It is shown as busy). This connection should not be there according to my ISP provider since I have my connection to the internet through my wireless connection. However as long as it is there my system works. Whenever my system stops working that connection is gone. I can then only recover by rebooting. WEIRD!!!!!

ppearl,
I would avoid using Registry Cleaners/Boosters/Optimizers:
The risk is great. The benefit is negligible.
An Example of What Can Happen
Did your system misbehave after installing RegSupreme Pro?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
RegSupreme Pro
Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Advanced SystemCare 3] "C:\Program Files\IObit\Advanced SystemCare 3\AWC.exe" /startup
O23 - Service: McAfee Framework Service (McAfeeFramework) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\McAfee\Common Framework\FrameworkService.exe (file missing)
O18 - Protocol: intu-qt2007 - {026BF40D-BA05-467B-9F1F-AD0D7A3F5F11} - C:\Program Files\QuickTax 2007\ic2007pp.dll
O16 - DPF: {C32FE9F1-A857-48B0-B7BF-065B5792F28D} (CAxMP4Dec Class) - http://169.254.88.90/activex/decoder/mpeg4_dec.cab

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT(RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop, Disable and Delete A Service
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type Services.msc and click OK.
Scroll down and find the service.

McAfeeFramework

Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click Apply , then OK

Delete the Service
Open HiJackThis. Click on Config, Misc Tools, Delete an NT Service
Type McAfeeFramework in the space provided and click OK
The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Sign in to your usual account.
Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following folders (If present):
C:\Program Files\McAfee\
C:\Program Files\IObit\
REBOOT back into Normal Mode
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

Let me know how it goes, and please post the contents of the two text files from the RSIT Scanner. Use separate posts if you prefer.

Did as you suggested until I got to disabling the McAfeeFramework service. It was already stopped and when I tried to disable it I got the message Unable to Disable. Error 5: Access denied. Also uninstalled and removed 10Bit.

What now?

Re: unable to access internet from windows XP apps via network

ppearl,
Your system is showing Norton online as the resident firewall and an AntiVirus presence, but doesn't show the installation.
---------------------------------------------
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says).
On your desktop, click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.
-------------------------------------------------------
Check Status of Windows Firewall
Got to Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel and double click on Windows Firewall
Verify that the General tab shows On (Recommended) as checked.
If not, put a check there and click OK

Let me know how it goes.

Norton removed successfully. Firewall was left on. One other clue......

For some unknown reason the wireless connection drops every hour or so and then reconnects by itself. Also my network connections still shows an unknown connection called "internet gateway" which seems to be active all of the time. I cannot disable it.

ppearl,
You have to disable it from the Router setup screens by disabling uPnP.
You need the make and model of your router, as well as the access address (192.168.0.1) to plug into your browser, and the Administrator name and password for the router.
Here is some reading material for you. This is what's causing the symptoms you describe.

I have removed uPnP support from the router and sure enough I now have no Internet Gateway and everything seems to be working well right now. It amazes me that the ISP tech support didn't pick this up. After all they own the router!!!!

Do you think this is the source of all of the dropped internet problems I have been having?

Since that function is designed to reset the network connections regularly, I think it is likely it caused the problem.
Look at it for a while and let me know.
