Hi bilbosgrdn,
-----------------------------------------------
Please Note Our Policy on the Use of P2P (Person to Person / Peer to Peer) file sharing programs
It is posted here: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=33112
As a condition of receiving our help, I have included the P2P programs Vuze and Vuze toolbar in the removal instructions below, so we are not wasting our time.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
--------------------------------------------------------
Removing Older Acrobat as the Default PDF Reader
You can keep your older Adobe Acrobat 5, but using it to open PDF files from the net is risky.
We are proceeding here to remove all the registry entries which call for using the older Acrobat to be the default reader for PDF files.
You can still use the Older Acrobat from Start, All Programs, but we will install a new Adobe Reader for use as the default application on Internet PDF files.
Next, Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader.
Any versions numbered lower than 9.3 should be replaced.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version.
---------------------------------------------
Run CKScanner
Download CKScanner from HERE
Important - Save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
After a couple minutes or less, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
A message box will verify the file saved.
Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Thanks for your help.
Please note:
AdAware is not letting me uninstall. It says "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." I have searched for the file name and am unable to find the installer that it wants to use to uninstall. Any suggestions?

Also, would you have any quick suggestions how to limit processes on start up? I should say, how to identify what is necessary and what is not.

Here is the info you requested.

bilbosgrdn,
We will get to those extra running processes, and I will give you some tools to deal with them.
First, we will clear out Ad-Aware, clean up temp files, and do a spyware search:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Open Notepad, then paste the contents of the following code box into the text.
Code: Select all
sc stop aawservice
sc config aawservice start= disabled
sc delete aawservice

Use Notepad's File, Save As to save it to your desktop as File type All Files (not as text file or it won't work), and file name FixSvc.bat
Exit Notepad and double click on FixSvc.bat
A Command window will flash on and off.
----------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it.
If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folders shown below, and one at a time, highlight the ones shown in red, if found, and press Delete.
C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\ <== this folder only
C:\Program Files\AskbarDis\ <== this folder only
You may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that,, note the name of the file, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.
  • After clicking on the download and choosing Save, the "Save to location" dialog will come up.
  • Choose Desktop as the location to save the installer and click Save again.
  • You should now have a desktop icon named mbam-setup.exe. Double-click it.
  • Let it install the program where it wants to, with the default settings, and click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
  • You can now delete the installer icon, named mbam-setup.exe from your desktop.

So we are looking for the log from Malwarebytes Anti-malware.
Let me know how it goes, and tell me what undesirable symptoms you are having.

OK. Ran code to disable adaware.
Did temp file clean.
Lavasoft would not let me delete Resources.dll nor ShellExt.dll. Both say access denied. Neither running in processes.
Cannot find askbarDis to delete folder. Even with search.
An issue I am concerned about but not sure if it is a real issue. I disable the Help Assistant and everytime I reboot it is enabled with a check in the password never expires. The temp file clean did a lot of deleting in the help assistant. Should that be running and using resources?

CPU usage still seems very, very high and slowing things down.

bilbosgrdn,
--------------------------------------------
Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe and save it to your desktop.
Close out all other open programs and windows.
Double click the file to run it and follow any prompts.
If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

*In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

mbr -f

Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

**Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access to the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).

bilbosgrdn,
Good results.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

Wow. Big log files. Lots of info.
Things are improving. Especially since the last scan removed the sinowal thing. I have read that was probably my problem.
I really appreciate the help you are giving me.
I notice that it is not connecting with avast. I had just uninstalled avast and installed AVG. Which do you think is better? I was thinking avast might be part of the problem.

bilbosgrdn,
Things are improving. Especially since the last scan removed the sinowal thing. I have read that was probably my problem.
I really appreciate the help you are giving me.
I notice that it is not connecting with avast. I had just uninstalled avast and installed AVG. Which do you think is better? I was thinking avast might be part of the problem.
Actually, neither sinowal or Avast! likely had anything to do with your problem.
It was the Mebroot/Help Assistant Rootkit infection.
You do need to consider the possibility that files, transactions, or other data could have been stolen from your machine while the infection was active. We cannot tell for certain what was happening while a rootkit was active.

The rootkit opens a "backdoor" to the machine.
Because of the infection's backdoor functionality(i.e., remote control capability), the basic security of your PC is likely compromised, and there is no way to be sure it can ever again be trusted.
The following articles may be of assistance in your decision: Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
If you wish to reformat, let me know.

If you wish to continue, we need to see what is left over, and make sure it's all gone.
Then a few security improvements.
It will take me a while to digest everything in the logs. Expect to be back with a reply, tomorrow AM my time.

Askey127,
Thanks. Last Thursday this computer began to get wacky. I came in after the kids had a day on it and the screen was blank and nothing happening. Had to shut it down and on reboot it said the system had recovered from a serious error. I ran avast and it found something that was downloaded Wednesday at 2:30 pm, why I didn't write it down I don't know. I did internet searches on it and didn't like what I was finding. My research took me to reading about the help assistant problem and that was my concern though I had no idea why it was there or what it might be doing when I could neither keep it turned off nor deleted. It would reappear on next reboot.
Anyhow, the computer has been shut down since then except when I was researching to find your site or on working on your suggested fixes. I would always disable the help assist as soon as I could get it to log.
If the infection did occur Wednesday like I suspect there have been no transactions on this machine. Hopefully we are ok.

Again, thanks for all your help.

Askey127,
Can we be at least reasonably sure we have it clean? I would like to contiune for now and learn about security improvements. At the least, even if we reformat I will learn a lot from you about security improvements.

bilbosgrdn,
OK. Let's go ahead with the cleaning.
------------------------------------------------------------
Older versions of Java have been vulnerable to malware infections in the past. It is important to install the newest version and make sure all older ones have been removed. (We have removed older ones already).
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
It is currently the 1st item on the page (the page changes often), called JDK 6 Update 18
The Item has two download buttons.
Click on the button labeled "Download JRE". Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK"
.
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------
Run an Online Kaspersky WebScan
  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the Program and Database downloads have finished, (may take a while), Click on My Computer under Scan. Go Have Lunch. It's not fast, but it's thorough.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post the contents of this log in your next reply.
