rundll32.exe Application not found

Unread postby brewman84 » March 28th, 2010, 4:08 pm

My friend has an xp media edition system that will not run any application, it typically displays the "Open With" window, Malwarebytes won't run, Adaware won't run etc. I haven seen the "rundll32.exe Application not found " error pop up. I haven't tried running HJT yet but I assume this won't run as well any any .exe file does not run. Any suggestion where to start? Thanks much.

Possibly the file associations are broken.

To fix exe file associations, see this fix: (Scroll down to "EXE")

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_e.htm

Or this:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_easy_file.htm

If one of the fixes resolves the file association issue, then please open a new topic and post a HijackThis log. If those do not work, it may be because the system is heavily infected and/or because vital system files have become corrupted. In that event, your best option is to reformat and reinstall the operating system.
